Blu-ray players do not necessarily have better DVD performance than DVD players; it depends on the model and its internals. When playing DVD a Blu-ray player is more-or-less a DVD player.

Will you still be using component as your primary source for the new player?

Note than Blu-ray players are getting into the price range where they don't cost that much more than DVD.

you havn't said if you are interested in 1080p/24fp. I think it's well worth having and most if not all non-blue ray players do not have this feature. I believe any of the new v10's including the one you are going to purchase allow the smother picture of the 24fps. Even now i believe that most of the lower priced blue ray players (those under $350.00) do not have 24fps while playing standard dvd's.

The good news is that there are two lower priced standard dvd players that have this feature. They are both from toshiba. They are the xde-500 and the xde-600. The bad news is that the xde-500 is pretty much all sold out and the xde-600 has never been reviewed and is available in the near future. Both units sell for around $79,99 and are well worth the money. (admitedly i havn't had any experience withe the xde-600 but love the xde-500. Presumably they made the new unit even better then the old. (then again sometimes they cut something out to keep costs down) both units have sections on the avsforum. You can read for yourself the features you need and any reviews thereon.

And yet I can't even give mine away. No one will take it.

You might also try looking for a Denon 1940ci. Just a tiny bit more than the Toshiba, but better built.

good newsthe xd-e600 now available from some on line guys as well as toshiba. Msrp $79.99 but no one is discounting them yet. Maby a bm store will carry them soon. Also, for the member that was concerned about the quality of the xd-e500 maby the new one will have any bugs worked out. I myself have not had any problem for 11 months.

Also, have not seen any reviews yet. Probably too soon. If you have time or are concerned about quality you might wait until a review surfaces.

Also, have not seen any differences in the two models except that the new one get a usb port.

I also see that others have recommended other dvd players which all seem like good recommendations. While i hann't researched these models i believe that these toshiba's are still the only reasonable priced dvd players that offer 1080p/24fps. (assuming that you have a set that is 120hz and uses this. This might be improtant to you as i find a definately smoother picture in this mode...especially on action scenes)

I'm curious as to why you wouldn't consider a bluray player? Sure, your current movie collection is DVD but that doesn't mean that you can't enjoy the better picture blu offers for your new purchases and continue to watch your current collection through upconversion-- especially with the new V series panasonic! Keep in mind that a 1080p tv is more demanding of it's source than you old 720p or 480p pioneer, plus I'm assuming you are going up in size? Essentially, a 1080p display not only benefits from a 1080p source more than a 720p display, but a 1080p is also less forgiving than a 720p for anything LESS than a 1080p source.

I have an oppo 980h which is a fine player that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend to anyone; however, unless you have a specific need for one of the unique feature the oppo can provide I wouldn't recommend the $170 oppo over one of the ever more affordable bluray players on the market! While I currently use a samsung 2900 equiped with HQV (no longer available) I can personally vouch for the panasonic bd60-- it is a fantastic player for both blu and DVD and, as a bonus, it will work especially well with your new panasonic tv! The bd60 is available for $250 or less...

Correction to my statement above!!! (on my iPod and can't edit previous post properly)
the bd60 is now selling for $200 or less! While ordo won't like me for saying this: for 200 you'd be better off buying the panasonic on the merits of it's upconversion alone over cheaper players like the toshiba. In addition, many players like the samsung 1600 now have streaming features such as netflix that can really add to the value of your purchase. All and all I'd give blu another look!
