I'm interested in hearing what connoisseours recommend on the proper way for storing CDs and DVDs while not in use. Common sense tells me that the correct storage should be horizontally rather than vertically since the exact same force of gravity will apply evenly to the entire disc and the cumulative distortion due to this force will be uniform for the entire disk. On the contrary, for vertical storage, discs are subject to the same force of gravity throughout ( the difference in gravity on the top part and the bottom of the disc is pretty miniscule to have any impact ); however, the real culprit would be the weight of the upper portion of the disc on the bottom part: this is a significant cumulative force that will distort the discs over time. Any other factors that should be considered as well? What is the correct answer?
I must confessed, that up to now, I have stored my music collection vertically ( it is more aesthetically pleasing ), but I'm really concerned about the longevity of my collection since it will be impractical to re-built, if needed. What are your thoughts on this?
