*Unofficial* Mitsubishi HC3800 Thread

A while back there was a wave of the new LCoS projectors. Then there was a wave of the new inorganic LCD projectors. Now there are two new waves. The first is the wave of the LED illuminated projectors. The second is the wave of cheap DLP 1080 projectors.

I think we can expect a series of low cost DLP projectors. All of them should cost around a grand. None of them will be very flexible as to zoom or image shifting. None of them will probably have frame interpolation. But they will undercut the more full featured Epson and Panasonic LCD machines by $500 to $1,000.

I would have bought this Mitsu if it had come out six months ago when I was in the market. I suppose I'll be shopping for a new projector in about two years. I hope there is an LED-DLP machine out by then that I can afford.

I'm waiting to catch the next wave.

I find it interesting, almost touching on the curious, that prior to release of the HD20 review, Evan posts his very brief comments about how the "HC3800 has an evident advantage in image sharpness, color saturation, contrast, and three-dimensionality."

Anybody else find this interesting?

It is interesting. Hopefully he posts the HD20 review sometime tomorrow as promised in one of the earlier annoucements.

Crap, now I have another 1080p projector I have to obsessively research and look forward to.

I currently have a Mits HD1000U and I have loved it from day one. I had always planned to stay with Mits and DLP, but lately they haven't really had many DLP offerings. This one seems almost too good to be true. I wonder if by "anamorphic modes" it means the feature similar to the Panny 3000 that lets you shoot on to a 2.40 screen. Oh how great that would be.

this is exactly what i thought when i saw the link in the hd20 thread. you know right when you buy the one you want. the week after the better one comes for 5$ cheaper lol

If this thing offers some Vertical lens shift it could be my next pj. but for the price the odds are not good.

I hope someone comes out with a 1080p dlp that can match the $2500 panasonic and epson lcd's in color, black level, lumens and on/off contrast. This one looks promising so i'll wait for professional reviews.

It probably doesn't have lens shift at this price. If it has image shift you should still be able to use the zoom method to do CIH. My HC1500 has that feature but doesn't have the zoom range needed to do it. Has anyone seen any more info on this like lumens or contrast ratio?

Hopefully this will quickly drop to the $1000 range to compete with the Optima, BenQ, and Vivitek. I think the HD1000U also came out priced at $1500 but dropped to $1000 shortly after to compete with the HD70.

What's interesting about it? He said he has it set up next to the HD20. Unless of course he's blind.

Any specs yet? I'm interested on its lumen output.

Wonder how the 3800 stacks up against its own LCD sibling, like the HC6500?

I had both the HD1000 and then the HC3000; the color wheel of the 3000 did not have much RBE, but it's dimmer due to lack of the white segment. The strength of the DLP is flesh tone and natural color but I did not have the Mitsu LCD for comparison; the weakness is light leakage thus reducing contrast.

Why 4x speed ???

It seems Mit. is cutting corners now as their last DLP model HC3100 has switchable 5x speed to choose from, which help reduce the rainbow effect for a lot of people, including me.

But back on topic, It doesn't look like we'll be getting 1080p projectors with lens shift anytime soon.
I can't find any info regarding if this unit sports one or not. i hope this streets near 1k and offers lens shift.

I have a Mits HC3000 and it puts up a damn nice image, If they nail it you can expect that the image is just like stated, Noticeably Upgrade for the $999 units. I have lost 2 lamps with my current Mits so I'm still not sold on quality, but this is one I'll follow closely as my MAX is about $1500.00 and I have no intention of spending $3,000+ on a projector. 1080P Price war has guns a blazing.

This is just great another dlp projector thrown into the mix.

I had it all figured I wanted an LED for under 8k I figured get one of these Sub 1k dlp's for now. I started out with 4 of them. HD20, X10, vivitek 1080 hd and the benq w1000

I had it narrowed down to the x10 because of the build quality then I heard about the Benq w1000 it was gonna be released in july I thought id chose one of them than the date for the benq gets pushed to august thats come and gone pretty much gone now ive been told its coming in 2 weeks thought Id hang in and pick one of them....Now its the mistsubishi hc3800 to compare to..The list narrows and then it expands again seems like manufactures are just keeping us tied down not of them has been on time on their new dlp's except optoma...Then its cedia probably a lot will come out there....September 13th is kick off Im gonna be probably gonna &%^#%&!%.

Nobody knows which is better until the reviews come out.

If I remember correctly Mits is giving a one year 500 hour warranty on the Bulb!!! The bulb is also rated to last 5000 hours in eco mode..Incredible. I have the Samsung 710 and at 535hrs had to switch to bright mode because the bulb is dimming so rapidly. Ill be lucky to get 1000 hours out of it before it gets to dim.

You should check the sharp XV-z15000. It goes for around $2,000 and its performance its on par to the AE3000. Art from www.projectorreviews.com liked it a lot.

This hc3800 looks very promising. I hope actual selling prices are closer to $1,000. With some time maybe I can afford one

Plus while nice projector I still think the ae3000 and 6500 are better overall projector for the money...Im gonna wait for new model to come out. I did read the review even before you mentioned it. Thanks anyway.

I'm not native english, but my understand of "...since it's not started by Mitsubishi." meaning is: since Mitsubishi not yet started shiping HC-3800 model on market...

Buy a bulb warranty for $80, then you are covered for 2 bulbs. I have the Mack and they sent me my bulb, it did take a few weeks though.

Hmmm now that makes sense..

I like my projectors bright..From what i have read this projector is a little on the dim side...Plus bulbs dim with age so it is not just a matter of the bulb failing but as it ages I would probably want to replace the bulb way before its rated life so this one is out..

BTW what is a MACK?

Mack = warranty company that covers projector bulbs (amongst other things). A lot of companies sell Mack warranties.
