To take a wild guess from the half-photo, I think the 3800 is using a similar chasis as Optoma 8200. If that's the case, the lens is center n that's what I hope for too.

For me it (lens) is definitely not in the center. Look at the shape of chassis and the stands at the bottom. Middle in beetwen them is the center of PJ, I think.

Look below at the little prediction of how probably HC-3800 will be look...

Damn, I was hoping it would be in the center like my current HD1000. I will be upgrading to either this, Optoma HD20, Benq 1000, or Vivitek. It depends on the reviews, of course.

I hope it's more than that. Right now I have the HD806 ( 2000 lumens), and it's a light cannon, which I need. I have a very large screen and ambient light -- The 806 picture is just okay, but bright. I would like something that has north of 1700 lumens.

Wow man, good work, for a moment I thought it was another PR picture! Then I looked closer. If you at the symbol right at the left of the lens, it seems that this projector has lens shift!!!

What do you guys think??

I think, this is warning pictogram, do not look straight to the lens! No lens shift...

Yeah, i've edited my post since my photomontage (is that correct in english? ) might be misinformative...

I look closer to my PJ, almost the same pictogram is on my HC-1500...

I can't recall any DLP's. But I'm skeptical of the 5000 hour life. They can say whatever they want. It's not like it's warranteed for 5000 hours.

Tell me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't an off center lens on a DLP without vents in front possibly help it to avoid light leakage?

This one's got me excited, as it looks to be my HD1000U's younger, cooler brother. Can't wait for reviews on this and the Vivatek now that the HD20 have held me off a bit - a bit.

We'll have to let each other know as soon as one of us takes the plunge. I think right now, you and I are on the exact same page. I did forget about the BenQ.

Right now, I am really interested in the Mits 3800 or the Vivatek, but like you, it's gonna all come down to reviews. I also want to maybe wait a month or so after that. Seems like all the "issues" with new models get discussed on the boards that first month - like the HD20 right now.

I agree. I like the minimum offset of the HD20, but I certainly won't let that be the deciding factor.

Personally, I'd like to see which one of the Benq/Optoma/Vivitek offers that 5% or so difference in performance. However, for the $500 premium I would expect the HC3800 to offer a discernible improvement over the value 1080P units. The Mits may nicely fill a niche between the value units and the high contrast $2,500+ projectors. In any case, it should be an interesting 4th quarter for the value concious projector enthusiast.

I just found this on the Mitsubishi site not sure if it has already been posted,

Contrast on/off is 3300 kind of disappointing, however we will have to wait for more reviews since Projectorcentral says it beats the HD20, 4000 on/off.

I think maybe we might want to consider this was a one of a kind demo unit so it may have been tweeked for best picture and not representative of a off the line unit.

I was suprised to see only one HDMI input.

That's not a review, it's the Mitsubishi website specifications.

Evan Powell seems to think that contrast is good, so we should wait for it's release before passing...

Now that I've seen the stats I'm less impressed. I wanted 5000:1 native on/off and with the short throw lens I'll take a wait and see. Don't get me wrong I have a Mits HC3000 that has 2800:1 native and it real throws a nice image when calibrated I also like thats it bright, so I'd still buy this before some of the others around $1,000 but if one unit clearly stand out like a DC3 with 5000:1 and quiet and bright I may pay $500 more for it, well see but I'd just as soon they had stuck with the HC1000 case and frame and found a few ways to improve it inside, its a price war and I'm a very patient buyer.

I don't understand your point...the Benq/Optoma/Vivitek units have a MSRP of $999 and the Mits is reportedly $1,500, MSRP...$500 premium, no? Possibly a rebate may be offered, but the MSRP has been reported to be $1,500. Of course street price may differ, but that would apply to the $999 projectors, as well.

Patience is a virtue most of us don't have here! So hats-off to you

Performance-wise, the 3800 reads a lot like a 1080p HC3000.
Perhaps the biggest differences are the (rated) brightness, zoom lens and (supposed) lamp-life.

Interesting that the DarkChip2 and 3 are now mostly gone from around this pricepoint.

I dare say that a run-out Benq W5000 may well be a better buy...

Bright, hardly -- at 1300 lumens it's disappointing. I'll pass on this one.

Projectorcentral hasn't measured the HD20 yet...that 4000 on/off figure is just Optoma's manufacture specs. I seriously doubt the HD20 has 4000 native on/off.

As for 3300 on/off being disappointing? Actually that's pretty darn good if it's native on/off. Many DC3 projectors had about that, native. Remember, we're talking native on/off, not dynamic. But again, it's Mits. specs, not independently tested.

Agreed, 3300 would be an excellent showing for a unit in this price range. Heck several high end DC3 (Marantz 15S1 for example) units barely test over 3300, and many are below that.

How can they go so ape crap over this thing when they haven't even had it in for testing yet? Sounds like they're smooching on Mitsubishi's butt a tad to make sure they get one ASAP. And why would something that costs $500 more than a comparable pj in terms of quality sell like Hot Cakes? I'll wait for the review...
