Elite or hard drive upgrade???

I'm having a hard time deciding what to do. I have an original Premium xbox with the 20gb hard drive. It has been repaired twice in the past by MS for the red ring while under warranty, but is working fine with no problems. I want to upgrade to a 120gb hard drive. I can get a brand new Elite that comes with the HDMI cables for $269. If I got the new system, I would then sell the older system to make up some of the difference in cost (and to keep the wife off my back some for spending more money). What do you guys think - get the new system or just upgrade the hard drive?

I'm in the same boat as you are. I was thinking about just buying the new Elite with the price drop because a) it's new hardware, b) it does have the 120gb drive, and c) I already have the A/V cables. Then I'd sell my old xbox.

I was going to just get the HD, but then I'll still have my original older box, and heck, why not just get something fresh?

If anyone caught it, there was a "mistake" on the German Amazon site showing a possible newer Elite with a 250GB drive for a little under $400.

Let me know what you do mdcnccu.

I was in the same boat a month or so ago...wound up buying a 120gb drive off ebay from a guy that puts refurb drives in MS cases and formats them for 360 use.

Works like a charm for 60 something bucks.

Until MS decides to ban everyone with tampered hardware...

Exactly. Still not sure why people think a drive that can be banned in an instant is a good solution, but to each their own.

From my end I can either buy a 120gb drive for the retail cost, or just buy the new system. I'm thinking I'll just pick up the new system.

Get the new system.

I'm also leaning towards the new system. Although my current system is working well, a new system with a new warranty is a little more comforting. Plus, I do like the black case. I'm such a tight-wad when it comes to money, it keeps me drawn to the cheaper route.

Maybe they will, maybe they won't...but for less than half of retail I'll take my chances before shelling out what they want for the thing.

Well with the HDD you do get a transfer cable... But unfortunately no dinner before MS r@pes your bum for $150.
Get the elite-- you'll get an extra gamepad, headset, audio dongle, hdmi cable and maybe even 2 semi decent games! You could even sell all that crap and more than pay for the difference in price! yay!

FYI I was in the same boat as well, However I decided to sell my 360 and use that money to buy a 60GB Pro Jasper.

Why make a $140 investment buying a 120GB hard drive on a system that is no longer in warranty or almost out of warranty.

60GB Jasper is plenty have like 7 games installed works great mainly because of the Extra cache Buffer 8MB

20GB Models are 5400rpm and have 2MB cache buffer (old launch premium models)

new 60GB Models are 5400rpm and have a 8MB cache buffer

same goes for the 120GB models

Over double the cache buffer really and noticeably speeds up load times, save times everything really.

same as you guyz........traded in my old system for $100 credit so decided to take the plunge on the Elite. I did notice some new settings in the setup but didn't know if this was due to a system update or the fact that I had it connected through HDMI. Btw, the hdmi cable is no longer supplied with the newer Elite systems.

Ice cold - when you refer to the 2MB cache buffer versus the 8MB cache buffer - is this a difference in the hard drives or a difference in the systems? Thanks for the input - somehting else to consider.
