Using a crack or key generator to validate the software is the 'illegal' part.

I think msft (and their lawyers) would disagree with you about that.

technet/msdn is the only legal way to get win 7 today.

Unless it was Microsoft who first seeded the torrent (which they didn't), the torrent is illegal. There is lots of legal software being torrented but the Win 7 RTM is not among them.

you only "have to" do a clean install if your coming from xp or older going from vista you can do a "in place" upgrade but when ever installing a new os best to do a clean install just end up with fewer problems imho

Of course they would, thats their job.

Again BIT TORRENT is not illeagal and people should stop saying it is.
Thanks to people saying BIT TORRENT is illegal we are now penalized by our ISP'f for using the vastly superior method of downloading.

Again the illegal part is the cracking of the software.
Is it illegal to download the software, and then purchase your own licencse to use it?
No as the download part is simply a method of transmitting data. It is once you circumvent the copy-protection that you are 'breaking the law'.
You can not be pursecuted for downloading software that you legally own.
It is ilegal to upload however....

See my post above. I never said that torrenting is illegal, I said that torrenting the Win 7 RTM is illegal. The only legal methods of owning the Win 7 RTM is if you have an MSDN or TechNet subscription so torrenting it to get it is illegal. As for uploading, that is how torrenting works, you upload while downloading.

I bought mine from the Campus Computer store at my school. Don't know if they were suppose to be selling them early, but they did.
