Looking for a 52" + HDTV for lots of 360 play

I currently have a 53" RPCRT HDTV. It's 1080i, and starting to show it's age (over 5 years) with poor image quality on the left side and bottom.

I am not in a hurry, but I am looking for a new hardcore gaming HDTV.

1080p is a must for me, and I need at least 52" - preferably larger.

I am not wanting to spend a crap ton of money, but basically I am wanting advice on what type of tv to get (LCD or Plasma) and then recommendations on brands etc. $1,400 or less would be nice.

I have a 42" Panasonic plasma in my back room (720p) and love the PQ I get when I play Gears 2. However, I am a bit concerned about burn-in as I play up to 8 hours of Gears 2 non-stop, several days a week. (usually only 4 hours or so, but it can easily go beyond that). Will burn-in be an issue for me on plasmas? How is the power consumption versus lcd? Do LCD's have 'ghosting' or 'lag' problems?

Thanks~!

I'm not sure how much you can put into this... BUT!

In 2005, Pioneer tested plasmas against many myths, and other display types...
http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pi...0-%20FINAL.pdf

Conclusion, they displayed a paused image for 48 hours, and although there was some IR, it went away with 24 hours of video loop. It's going to be ok. And plasma is the only thing I'd ever consider right now if I were buying a set.

Power consumption isn't that bad if you're not running it in torch mode. I don't have exact figures, but I'm sure there's info in the Plasma section.

FWIW I have a Panasonic.

spent $2,000 jan. 08 for a 52 in sony lcd. does 1080p has all the connections i need.
last week i stopped our local frys (manhattan beach, ca) and seen a 55in LED samsung for $2,500. this thing was thin! lifting it against sales clerks orders it must've weighed 30-40 pounds (guesstimation).
plasmas are hangin tough at retail. there's always a couple around. LCD is prevalent all around though. i'm happy with my 52in lcd.

If you are coming from a CRT HDTV then you should look at DLP's. You could go 60"+ and still be in your budget. IMO only buy an LCD or Plasma in that size range if space is a concern.

60" Mitsubishi DLP is <$1K at the local Ultimate Electronics.
I'll throw in another vote for a DLP. I have a 56" 1080p Samsung DLP LED, and 360 via VGA (no HDMI on 360) looks fantastic. No burn in potential. RPTV is still a better bang for the buck.

For the record, I have beat the hell out of my 8 month old, 50" Panasonic plasma and it has yet to show the slightest hint of image retention/burn-in. It has been perfectly fine with 8 hour sessions of Fallout 3 and Saints Row 2. It has also been more than happy to just sit at the menu screen of XBMC on my Xbox as I play album after album after album.

My previous 42" plasma was also perfectly happy to do the same for 3 years. It showed image retention, but never for more than 30 seconds.

You're coming from a RP CRT? Guess what? That also uses phosphors for image production. Do you have burn-in problems with that? No? Then don't worry about burn-in with a plasma.

That post makes me feel good about plasma. Although, my RPCRT does have burn-in. On the 2nd day of ownership, my wife left the DVR on pause before going to work. It was on pause when I got home 10 hours later. That little pause bar is still extremely visible to me (not many others) to this day!

As for other posts regardind DLP - space isn't a concern for me as my current set sits out 18" from the wall. However, I hear plasma the best PQ, viewing angles, blacks, colors, etc that you can buy. Not true?

those prices aren't making my TV pants go crazy at all. even with a 10% TV coupon (just got it in the mail today) I'm not loving these prices... Best Buy is just too high.

If you have an HH Gregg near you, you can haggle with them. I've always gotten a good price on my TVs there.

Although I don't have a Sears card, I seriously considered that tv. Unfortunately I haven't heard good things about LG TV's. And walking through a Best Buy the other night, my buddy noticed lines on nearly every single LG tv they had on display. And vertical lines are a problem on this particular set too. Some vertical display board goes out or something. If it didn't have nagging tech problems, I would have ordered this deal last week and never posted this thread.
edit... yea, seems to be a common problem, but they're replacing the board for free with a board that doesnt have the defect.... if you have a problem.

for everything this has, and 60" for a little over 1k... it's easy to buy and live with if it happens, IMO.

Correct. Pioneer plasmas are quite possibly the best TV on the planet. Panasonic gives you far better bang for your dollar though. 90-95% the performance at what, a half to a third the price?

i love my 42" 720p panasonic plasma. we mainly watch tv, and our DVR downscales all 1080i content to 480 and it still looks AWESOME!!!

Try online retail stores. I bought my 52 inch samsung a650 back in February for $1900 total at Newegg. Best Buy's price for the tv was about $500 more then. I also bought my previous tv before this one online-panasonic plasma 37px60u for $1,000. I also saved about $400-$500. Online is the way to go if you order from a reputable dealer.+No Taxes!!!-shipping was free for me for both tv's also.

I recently upgrade my old Samsung 42" plasma for a 60" LG THX plasma. N-I-C-E. All I use if for is 360 gaming and watching streaming video from my 360. It looks great.

how is the burn-in or image retention for the 360?
Plasma > LCD > DLP

This coming from an LCD owner.

A 50 inch Pioneer Elite (you won't notice the 2 inch difference) can be had for very reasonable prices these days. The new series from Panasonic is supposed to be very good as well, though I haven't seen one in person.
If you have a Fry's by you, check them out. I don't have the ad in front of me but this week they appear to be blowing out all their Sonly LCD's before the new line comes out. Most of them had AT LEAST $1K discount or more.

No such thing in 2009 my friend. That's a problem from years ago. I didn't even do the suggested "100 hour burn in", just started gaming with it right out of the box. Sure, there's some transient, minimal image retention if I've played with static images for hours (which I do regularly), but it literally goes away in a couple of minutes of playing a different game or watching a show or something. It's not an issue these days.
Went from an LCD to a Plasma and the Plasma is better in every single way for gaming from what little I have done. The clouding on the LCD I had was VERY annoying for gaming.

I have the same TV and set up, except non-LED. It's 2+ years old and still blows away many sets, especially for bang for the buck.

Im still amazed at how people believe in this myth. There really does need to be a myth busters show for A/V gear.

Yeah I gotta say Best Buy just doesnt seem as competitive with their pricing of almost anything anymore. Especially not TV's. I guess the day and age of the internet retailer has really turned me off to them, their pricing and their sales pressure and warranty/service plan gimmicks.

DLJ.. I dont agree with you all the time. But I definitely agree with you here. I cant understand why people put so much money & faith into Pioneer.. especially when their Plasmas are so dated.

3-4 years ago.. the Kuro killed everything. These days there is barely a difference. And that 5% difference is like you said atleast 50% cheaper, brand new and comes with a brand new warranty to match.

I think the most important thing people forget is that when you finally do get your new tv home. Its not sitting next to 50 different competitors in the store. As long as the picture is pretty decent, the menu's are easy to use and it has enough inputs.. you will be satisfied with your purchase.

Once a TV is home, it doesnt have to compete side by side to win your vote.

There have been some excellent suggestions on this page, but I would take the approach of quality over size. I agree with many that plasma is excellent choice, and the newer Pamals have very little chance of burn in. With that being said, I would search for a pioneer kuro 50". Perhaps a touch higher than you want to spend, but could be had for under 2k net.(non elite version of course). I just bought 3 kuro's, 151, 141, and their elite projector (essentially a jvc rs2, slightly souped up). These are replacing 60" lcd's, and the pictures are night and day difference (almost the same wow factor as going from sd to HD. As a gamer, the contrast and blacks look so much better, especially in shooters, as everything tends to be dark, it makes a difference. I agree that panasonic is the way to go plasma when on a strict budget, but with the recent drop in kuro pricing, the difference is worth it. Pioneer is leaving the plasma business, and I think that pioneer is buying that division. Most here on Avs believe that nothing will compare with kuro's for the next several years ( which is why many of us are buying multiple sets to replace everything. I am looking for 2 more sets in the 40" range, but there are no kuro's in that size so I will buy panasonic.

I actually think that the current kuro panals that are less than 2 years old are night and day better than anything on the market. The older kuro's were less spectacular. In a recent demonstration they had muliple manufacturors together, with all sets on, they then turned of the lights and then the tv's and every tv was still visible except for the kuro which could not be seen. Phenominal technology in the panals, but not profitable.
i'd buy a panny before i bought a kuro.... theres not enough difference to warrant the cost.
