Which harmony remote? Which light dimmer? HELP

Ok I'm looking to get a Harmony remote. I want the possibility to have the remote work both the lights and components with the push of one button. I have a difficulty though, the location where the dimmer will be located is not in line of sight, and is totally away from where my tv and components are. I have drawn a picture to illustrate my "theater room." Please help, what options do I have to get this to work. Pretty much which combo of remote and dimmer will work to make what I want in bold possible?

There are a couple of ways to go about this. Going Z-wave, which is an RF (radio frequency) standard. This is available in the the Harmony 890 and 890 Pro. I believe the Harmony 1000 officially dropped support for Z-wave. When using a Z-wave dimmer you can program one of those remotes to do exactly what you want with sequences.

The other route is to use infrared but this would require some sort of IR blaster to extend the range of the remote because of the wall blocking line of sight.

The newer models of Harmony remotes, unfortunately, no longer support any true RF standards. They will only work with their new IR extender/blasters.

You can't use any Z-wave commands within a sequence. You can only add a Z-wave scene to the activity startup and exit. This means you can hit Watch Movie and it dim the lights, but you can't make it dim the lights when you hit the Play button/sequence. The reason is that Z-wave switches are not added as a Device in the Harmony software for you to select when creating sequences.

I would personally decouple the remote from the lighting control. I have a Harmony 890 which supports Z-wave and then purchased five Z-wave dimmers. Now that Harmony doesn't support Z-wave I have hardly any choice in a new remote if I wish to keep my dimmers (Nevo remotes is about my only choice).

If I had to do it over again I would get something like the IRLinc IR receiver to Insteon lighting controller. With an IR receiver for your lighting you can use any remote to control your lights (and include them in sequences). I would use my RF extender and just run an IR emitter to the IRLinc controller. The IRLinc would then control the lights in a self contained system that is not tied to any particular remote.

This sounds about right to what I want to do. I doesn't neccesarily have to be me pushing play and pause to control the light during a movie view. Just a the option to have the remote work both the lights and components with the push of one button. Your remark is well appreciated but a bit complicated for a novice like me. Could you please simplify?

Thanks for the correction. I never did get around to actually using my 890 Pro for Z-wave dimmers...but I did end up going with a NevoQ50. The reasons for the switch are that Logitech no longer supports Z-wave officially, the 890 is very limited in what z-wave devices it can control, it needs to be the primary remote, complete inflexibility, the list goes. Enough reasons? :P

Well just finished installing a IR lutron dimmer and suprisingly, the dimmer can get the signal of the remote that comes with the dimmer thru the wall of my basement. So I'm hoping that the 880 I have ordered can do the same, then I can more easily so somewhat of what I wanted possible.
