3.3 Super Resolution
Improved representation of movement, improved contrast, since it stands to improve another important domain: the sharpness. Finally, submit any purchaser of a FullHD projector value on a very detailed image representation.
Now it is not easy to teach the signal electronics even more focus, because after working in the TW5000 and TW5500 also already an HQV chipset which is known for its high-quality scaling and excellent de-interlacing. For this reason, at Epson has integrated an additional processor that is dedicated exclusively to the sharpness of the image processing, which the manufacturer werbewirksam as a "super resolution" means.
As with a scaling algorithm determines a specific little picture details and more sharply distinguishes this from a recalculation of the color and brightness data. We can rewrite the function as a "pixel-based Dynamic Gamma.
The super-resolution imaging is technically complex

"Superresolution can" - that is, in our opinion, a slightly misleading term, since the dissolution of playback can not be subsequently increased, at least for native-HD, they already corresponds to the pixel of the projector. In our first little test, therefore, we wanted to make the task particularly difficult, by dialing a very high-definition Blu-ray, "Casino Royal", sought out and highly detailed scenes. In particular, many small elements shows a wide shot of Mark-to place, here is a detail:

The screenshot above shows a small detail in the enlargement. It's amazing how well FullHD also micro details that only a few centimeters tall can depict. Can the super-resolution rausholen circuit one more thing "?
Super Resolution (Mode 3)
The answer: You can. As shown in the second screenshot, it increases the Schärfeempfinden through its intelligent pixel adjustment. However, these functions are always treated with caution, because not only image content through them sharper and clearer, but also disturbing artifacts (noise, compression artifacts,) steps. Especially great is the danger in particularly strong mode "3", which was also selected for the screenshot above. In our view, the overall picture looks a little 'too sharpened "and looses a bit of its naturalness.
As a less obvious, but very well without any side effect, the modes 1 and 2 work. Here the focus is raised in good tolerance, without allowing small details to outshine. The image also works at full HD resolution by the Super Resolution circuitry clearer and sharper.
Well good FullHD material of house is very sharp, so that such an additional circuit, although beautiful, but is not absolutely necessary. The situation is different with conventional PAL: Even with good DVDs is missing due to lack of resolution, the final focus, especially the small details contribute soft and fuzzy. For conventional PAL or NTSC DVD, the impact of the super-resolution circuit is therefore particularly interesting.
We tested different image qualities of traditional DVDs, films of poorly mastered, to good. The result was still significant and while better than Blu-rays. Especially with DVDs with the already good sharpness succeeds in Super Resolution circuitry, details work out a clear and substantial rise Schärfeempfinden without provoking double contours or artifacts. Again have proven the weaker modes 1 a.m.-2 p.m. special. In contrast, poorly mastered DVDs confirms our theory that annoying artifacts are also evident. But in combination with the HQV artifact filters (mosquito noise, etc.) is possible even with them a considerable increase in quality.
Overall, the new circuit brings obvious advantages and is just "Schärfefanatikern recommend" to. We encourage everyone to get a proper look at her. In our estimation, the high cost of the additional processor, more than paid for itself and is a unique feature in this generation of TW5500.
