Epson 8500UB 200,000:1 CR - Page 121

Question, I have a 9500ub that has a dust blob close to the center of the screen. It only shows with dark background....is the a dust blob or something else? With white background, it cannot be seen.
Im wondering if I should ask for a replacement but afraid to get a refurbished in worse condition...thought...

Yes, Epson provided a return label to send back the bad bulb.

Epson mentioned nothing about returning my old one on the phone. They also did not take a credit card number from me, so I guess they are just going on the honor system....

So did most of you keep the old bulb or returned it?

I actually has a re-furb with a small dust blob at the lower right corner, but the overall picture was superior, so I kept it since I only noticed the blob when the screen was completely dark.

I returned mine. Why would anyone want to keep a bad bulb?

Yes, I also got a free replacement from Epson. Came very quickly with free return label shipping for the burned out bulb. This was about 2-3 weeks ago. The 8500 B projector was purchased at the beginning of June, 2010. New bulb and projector works great for me.

I received my new bulb and yes it did include instructions for returning old bulb. Amazing just how much power the old bulb had lost as I only had 1303 hours on it. I had said 1800 in a previous post, but that was not right. It is much brighter again and looks like it did new. I purchased my projector in June of 2010. It seems like a lot of bulb failures occur around 1200-1400 hours. Would be curious to know how Epson came to a 4000 hour lamp life for this projector? They should replace the bulb twice for owners given the 4000 hour claim.

Maybe the bulbs they used for testing were manufactured properly (who knows), unlike the POS ones they actually include with the projectors. QC issues like crazy!

So they test it in a way that no one would actually use it, unless they lived in a cave.

My first 8500UB bulb blew around 1,800 hours after nothing but Eco mode use. Right before it blew, it did this weird random dimming thing like the iris was on... then one night, it went super dim and blew the next week during Return Of The King (seriously, right when Gollum falls into the fires of Mount Doom - POP!). Epson sent me out a new bulb with no problems.

That replacement bulb just hit 1,800 hours. Sure enough, about a week ago, it started doing the random dimming thing. Tonight, the bulb dropped in brightness noticeably, but is still working. I called Epson, told them what's happening and that I'm afraid this one's going to pop like the last one... and without the bulb even blowing yet (and with just over a month left on my warranty), they're overnighting me a replacement.

Say what you will about the quality control problems... but compared to my customer service experiences with Sanyo on my last projector, Epson is AMAZING. When it comes time to replace the 8500UB, it's a pretty safe bet that it will be with another Epson.

Wait untill your projector needs replacing and after months of the run around let us know if you feel the same way.

What run-around? When I first got my 8500, it wouldn't power on and they had another to me the following afternoon. Fortunately, the original unit randomly came on after that call and has worked ever since, so they had me just refuse the replacement.

I know it's easy to get jaded about them sending you another whole unit and it maybe not being perfect (alignment issues, etc.)... but again, compared to my experience with Sanyo, Epson is a dream. My Sanyo PLV-Z2000 had the red polarizer burn out twice during its 3 years... and both times were a fight to get Sanyo to replace it, during which time I was without a projector for over a week.

That's how they test contrast too...Brightest dynamic closest to the screen vs dimmest mode iris all the way down, etc. No one would ever experience high contrast this way.

Just replaced lamp at 3031 hours on pro purchased in April, 2010. Purchased added warranty at the time so replaced lamp through that. This was always used econ and when I added full power to the bulb, it lasted a light up a couple of times then failed. I clean the filter every 200 hours. Just to let all of you know of my experience with this unit. Upon replacement of lamp, it almost requires a pair of sunglasses. I still plan on using econ.
