Helping a friend. What to get?

Ok, my friend's Pioneer Elite died on him and he needs a new TV. He saw my Samsung A650 and loves it. However, I told him the A950 would be my choice (6 months ago when he started looking) but can not find any. He wants a 55", room is not very bright, but he watches a TON of sports.

Question is, I think his family would prefer to get a TV now as they have a 20" on top of their Pioneer Elite. The room is rather large and that's why the preference for the 55". I read mixed reviews on the 8000, B750 and it seems people are saying to wait for the 8500. But if I read it correctly you can not control the dimming on that as well? If not would the price difference of the 8000 to the 8500 really be worth it? Should he stay or go with the B750 or something else?

Source: cable (Comcast Philly area)
DVD: Sony 1080I

Viewing habits: 80% sports: Tennis, football, baseball, Golf. Most viewed in HD and some SD.

He had the board repaired once and it went again. They called and are having trouble getting parts and it's rather expensive....I believe they are still waiting for a price. He's been wanting to get an LCD tv anyway.

Samsung UN55B8000 Beware of uneven backlight..

The backlight is extremely uneven at the corners. In dark scenes (like credits, or the entirety of letter-boxed movies) you will see little searchlights coming from the corners. Once you see it (and you will see it), you won't be able to NOT see it.

The autodimming feature is also poorly implemented. Again, in credits or scenes where there is more dark than light, it will turn the backlight down for "better contrast". However, when the TV changes its mind about the scene, the previously dim white areas will pop bright white. It looks very strange.

I will probably suggest the A950 or the 8500/9000...

If money is kinda tight, he might want to check out the new LED Local Dimming Toshibas...
