We've still seen far more male buttocks that female boobies on prime-time TV. If that's a deluge, then please give me drought.
I remember I, Claudius. When it was first broadcast in America back in the late seventies, there were a good deal of cuts, particularly in the Caligula episodes. This was regular network PBS. A later re-broadcast was the same. Then in the late eighties there was a syndication hosted by Anne Bancroft which was what appeared to be the complete series, including nudity and the legendary scene with Caligula emerging with the bloody mouth (if you have to ask, you really don't need to know).
Then, bingo, a rerun in the early nineties, after the Contract with/on America. Not only was the series cut again, but there were numerous cuts of things that were permitted during its initial run in the seventies ("well, make sure she isn't a virgin when you kill her")!
There is not a steady progression towards sophistication (or permissiveness, if you prefer), particularly since we must pander towards our most conservative brethren.

It was great though!
