How to connect to xbox live at hotel

Thread Starter
I am at a hotel for business trying to connect to live. The hotel uses global suite browser authentication where it automatically detects what room you are in then asks for your name to verify. I tried using my wireless adapter for the xbox but that doesnt work. I then tried to bridge the connection on my laptop but that doesnt work either. I think its the browser authentication that is throwing everything off. Any ideas?

I've been trying to connect to Xbox Live using my cell phone

Sprint Rev A 3G (really more like 3.5G) 1.4MB down 400kbps upload.

USB 2.0 tethered connection to my laptop.
enable ICS
Xbox 360 ethernet to my Laptops ethernet

It connects but can't get past DCHP or NAT some settings

one day it will work.

You need to make sure that TCP ports 53, 80, and 3074 are open along with UDP 53, 88, and 3074 are open. Good luck with that, as it's pretty unlikely to happen.

To the OP try seeing if the hotel has an on staff tech that can set you up.

It will depend on the hotel. Each hotel can have different setups. Some just plug everyone into a router...some will have a whole monitoring system. Like Ripeer said I would contact the front desk and see if they can help or if they have a tech support number you can call for help. Like here at the hotel I work at we can manually authenticate by your MAC address so you skip that process. So contact the front desk and see if they can get you some help.

Be prepared for them to not to allow you though. Some hotels have a pay per play video game system so the likelihood of them letting play on live and not their pay per play system is slim. Another thing is some hotel chains monitor a hotels bandwidth and if it drops below a certain point then the hotel is required to get the bigger pipe. So in order to save money for them they want to limit usage to anything other then browsing. They could also have XBL on their ban list.

Are you using the manual set up or just the automatic? I think in the manual setup on the 360 you have a place to enter user name and password you can give that a try.

There is no password and such to enter. The internet system automatically detects where I am trying to connect from then asks for verification. If I am on the lawn, pool, or courtyard it will ask for my room number then other verification.

And i set everything up manually and it should work. I am almost 100% certain the router is filtering out my MAC address. I will go to the front desk tomorrow but it doesnt look good.

This absolutely works with the LG Voyager through Verizon and the Iphone 3GS through AT&T. I know because I've did twice.

Its also the way to connect through your hotels ISP. You will need either a WiFi connection to your hotels ISP or a the 360 wireless adapter.

Here are the steps:

1) Order the Internet Service (duh.. lol).
2) Use your laptop to login to the ISP service. You probably have to give your room number and a passcode.
3) Insure you can generally surf the web freely by trying a few of your favourite internet sites.
4) Turn on Internet Connection Sharing
5) If you are using a wired ethernet connection to your hotel's ISP.. then create a ad-hoc WiFi network with your WiFi adapter.
5a) If you are using a WiFi connection to your hotel's ISP.. then create a ad-hoc wired ethernet network with your wired ethernet connection.
6) Connect your 360 to your ad-hoc network using either of the above solutions. (Either WiFi or Ethernet).
7) Run the Xbox Live connection test and you should be good to go.

Trust me its alot simpler than it seems. The hardest part is setting up the ad-hoc network.

What you'll probably need to do is change the Xbox MAC address to match the laptop's. I'm not sure if that's possible with the wireless adaptor but I've done this successfully using wired ethernet. You can get the laptop MAC from a dos prompt with the command "ipconfig /all" and (at least for a wired connection) use this address under advanced networking on the Xbox.

Authenticate using the PC, then put it to sleep and you should be able to connect to live from the Xbox.

Oh trust me I know how to do that. The problem is, its not working. Nor does the wireless adapter for the xbox.

I've had success by using two DLink Travel Routers, one set up as a router, the other set up in clinet mode (for the xbox), I accept the usage terms using my computer or iphone (through the router), then the xbox will get onto live.
I've also had success by spoofing the mac address of my xbox using my computer so that I can accept the terms, then connecting the xbox to access live.

Yep it was the mac address being filtered. I just changed it to match my computer and now im connected. It has a moderate NAT though.

Thanks for the tip samstag

so i changed my Mac address on my xbox and it gets as far as the internet stage and wont go to live. what do i do?
I wrote out the directions that work for me. Everytime. Like Colt45.

Simply connect to the internet with the laptop and 'share' the internet connection. I've never had it not work. Used it atleast 10x all on different occasions in diff hotels. Even used it in my own apt the day I moved in.. while waiting for the cable guy to come turn on the real internet.

Played xbox live for over 2 years now across a tethered phone on AT&T. NAT is moderate but thats only thing.. Doesn't really matter though, only have problems with that once every 5 months.

So you are saying to hook my phone up via USB or are you saying share the internet from the laptop without the phone. Please explain further in depth. I am in theis stupid hotel for three weeks and you can only play campaign for so long.

His instruction set listed in your quote is for using a laptop. It looks like the instructions I used when I was in your predicament.

The phone set up has you connecting to your phone. You will have to look that up as I haven't done that.

Off Topic, but related:

Has anyone brought their 360 to China? I go on business every other year, and I am bored to the point of insanity. I want to play offline, no need for XBL. I am wondering what hurdles I might face, other that a power converter. I am wondering if there will be with any compatibilty issues with whatever TV is in the very westernized and modern hotel?

Yea, PDAnet still works on 2.2, though the installation method is different since it's not on the market anymore.

Since Droid went 2.2, I just use the native USB tethering...no pdanet.

I'm on 2.3 now, and the native USB tethering works there, too.
