Boardwalk Empire Season 1 has 4 episodes that have a few lines of forced subs. The forced subs are listed on the main English sub track.

I'm not getting this because I alredy watched it but I was wondering where/how the forced subtitles were listed on the main English sub track so I can look for it on other titles.

With eac3to it looks like this:

12 - Subtitle (PGS), English, 740 normal captions, 4 forced captions.sup

That's for episode 6, English subs on track #12.

Okay, so can these be separated out so that you only have the forced when needed without having subs on all the time? I like to have subs for the whole show in case I'm watching it when others are sleeping or the dialogue is tough to understand but have the option to turn it off while still being able to see the forced subs.

That depends on your player and filter... but yes, they can easily be separated into two different and distinct sub tracks or kept together if your player/filter supports the force subs flags (not all do).

MPC-HC with LAV splitter.

One other thing, is there a link to the editable spreadsheet? I clicked the link in the first post but it is locked.

I have no idea which filters/splitters support what. I know what works for me on my Dunes.

Oh, I thought you were using an HTPC.

I Use MPC HC + LAV as well, and just have forced subs delivered

I gave up on HTPC when I got my Dunes. Saved a ton of $$$ since I don't need my migraine meds anymore.

Right, apologies. I might be talking out of my behind. I ran these through anothereac3togui and ended up with subtitle elements which used to mean forced subs. However on closer inspection I think I have complete English subtitles in my files as well as hardcoded subs in places.

I use mine for a bit more than just streaming from a server or another PC. I like having the ability to tune Live OTA TV for when I eventually ditch paying for Uverse. When I got mine it was only a few bucks more (HDD's not included) than content streamers that could adequatelly handle high bitrate HD files and it has 5TB or storage space in and of itself.

Exactly.

Yes it does but they sit on their own separate track. Easy to find.

Code:
11 - Subtitle (PGS), English, 16 forced captions

Update obtained from ClownBD:
Bourne Trilogy (UK):
Bourne Identity - Subtitle track 40 is the forced track but not listed as "forced" the same goes for the movies below.
Bourne Supremacy - hardcoded
Bourne Ultimatum - Subtitle track 40

Taken - track 11
Kill Bill vol 1 - track 11
Kill Bill vol 2 - track 11

The Incredibles doesn't show any forced subtitles with Clown_BD so you need to manually force sub 21. It has the subtitles for when Bon Voyage insults "incrediboy."

Hi,

Thank you for the great thead guys, it is helping me significantly, but I am wondering how easy it is to check if a film needs forced subtitles? At the moment I just used makemkv and take all subtitles. The onmly way I know if I need to worry about forced subtitles at all is if I come here and look, or get half way through a film and find out that subtitles are missing.

Also does anyone have any hints for finding the correct time code for subtitles so I can check they are behaving correctly. Can I view the subtitle tracks within an mkv file easily (ie in notepad so I can see the time codes?)

As at the moment I rely on my memory of a film (which if I havent seen it for 10 years can be an issue )

thanks in advance

You can open the PGS subs in BDSup2Sub400 and check the time line with that.

I think you have to extract the subs using muxer first though. I usually use clown_BD to rip the playlist I've chosen. Then I look at the extracted subs using BDsup2Sub4.0.

That is correct and it makes making mkv's a bit more work than using MakeMKV for some films.

Seven out of ten episodes of Game Of Throne has forced subtitles in it.

Last Of The Mohicans (blu-ray) with burnt in subs.

Do you have the track numbers for the forced subs on those titles? Knowing that helps a lot. Thanks.
Sammy2 -

Not without relooking at the disc, however if I recall Game Of Throne only has one English subtitle for each episode. In the future I'll add the information for discs as I come across them :/

I gotta start saving my logs for titles I find with forced subs and post them here so we can compare notes.

I'll do that from now on.

BTW...

Midnight in Paris (US) has 3 forced subs while none of the other versions (FRE, ESP, UK?) have them.
The Whistleblower US blu-ray has 121 forced subs on track # 6.
The Darkest Hour (2D/3D) has forced English subs in Track #9. Scope friendly.
Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol Bluray has a forced subtitle track - the third English track (4610) - contains 87 subs and they are scope friendly, but are a little bit high on the screen, kind of annoying. Cheers!
