THX Optimizer and picture/contrast

on somebodys advice, i decided to throw in one of my daughters Pixar dvd's for the test. well it starts out with the calibration for contrast. ok so heres where im confused: i turned the contrast all the way up and could still see all four shades distinctly. i thought if it was too high youd just see all white. am i wrong?????



secondary dumb question: ok just in case i did it wrong, you dont adjust the picture when it shows the little white box up in the corner right? I did it when i clicked on "Play Test" and the big image of the shades of white were displayed. just makin sure

You probably have some 'magic' automatic mode engaged on your TV set which makes such settings almost impossible.

What is the model number of your TV?

im not on an HDTV (forgot to mention that if it matters)

its a Sony FD Trinitron Wega: KV-32FS120

That setting should probably be set to "Movie".

Then try your calibration again.

You might also want to set the Color Temp to "Warm"and turn the "Clear Edge VM" to "OFF.

Without being there or having that set, these are best guesses.

Contrast test on THX disc does not apply to CRT displays. You need a light meter for a CRT. 30 fL is the goal based on a 100% white window box pattern.

i dont use the vivid mode. i am on standard mode but i could try testing out movie. i have already turned off the VM. I have color temp set to off. What is the advantage to setting it to warm?

"Warm" is usually closest to the D65 standard color temperature.

oh and does this also mean that the brightness test wasnt accurate?

The brightness test is fine with the drop shadow. The contrast test is designed for digital displays.

it just seems odd that the test is only for hdtv's but has been around since Toy Story 1 & 2, back when nobody had an hdtv.

You can see where not to set your contrast with the THX contrast pattern on a CRT. However, it isn't the ideal pattern to set contrast on these types of displays. If you see any blooming (the boxes become larger) then your contrast control is set too high.
Also remember that contrast and brightness are interactive. If you adjust one, be sure to check and re-adjust the other, if necessary.
