NEW: Sony's BDP-N460 w/streaming - Page 41

Once you start building up your BD collection, you're going to learn a few annoying things about BD's.

1. Some have tons of cool interactive extras, some do not.

2. Some look stunning visually, others don't look much better than their dvd predecessor.

3. Some have auto resume, many do not.

I highly recommend bluray.com when it comes to BD reviews. They're usually dead on when it comes to reviewing the video quality. They use a point system, so you don't even have to read what they have to say about it, you can just see how many points it got. I mean if you're going to pay 20-25 for a bd that you already own on dvd, you're going to want it to be somewhat of an upgrade, right?

Thanks for that link. Great source. I bookmarked it.

I don't really plan on purchasing many BD's. I'm going to be primarily renting via Netflix and purchase only my absolute favorite films (many of which are still not available on BD quite yet, like "City Of God").

Just keep in mind what I mentioned earlier. The N460 does seem to have a brief delay on old dvd's when the layer changes. It's like a half a second delay, not a big thing and sometimes not even noticable. Someone mentioned their samsung did the same way but firmware fixed it, so maybe Sony will release firmware for the issue, one can hope.

I don't plan on watching many DVDs either. My DVDs are ripped onto my Mac and I can watch them, if desired on my HDTV, via an HDMI cable.

What I meant is that I'm going to be watching most of my BD's via Netflix rentals. There is a potential for me to purchase my favorite movies in the form of BD's but to be honest I'm not really a fan of owning physical media so I try to avoid it at all costs.

An update regarding my N460 and the first 3 BD movies I've watched on it (with regards to bookmarks).

"The Hurt Locker" - I can't remember exactly but I don't believe I had the option to bookmark on this title. If I did I don't believe I was able to find where I could re-access to said bookmark upon playback.

"The Bank Job" - Green button created a bookmark. Two of the other colored buttons brought up a screen to control what bookmark to access/delete.

"Avatar" - Green button created a bookmark. Upon resuming of disc a screen would pop up reading "Resume Playback?". In an ideal world all BD would have this feature.

I'll report back with my next series of BD viewings. As for PQ I'm very happy with the N460.

I've been doing more digging..

Seems even some of the Oppo players have this "layer change" delay issue. So far it seems all BD players have brought back the old "layer change" delay. The length of the delay just ranges between models. So far I still haven't noticed this with bd's but there's a good chance that they pack the actual film on the first layer, and all of the extra's are on the second layer. If that's the case, if there is a layer delay, it wouldn't be noticable.

Some have noticed the delay is the most noticable on the Lord of the Rings dvd's.

I don't own those so I can't verify that.

If the issue isn't present with BD discs, as Sony told me it shouldn't be.. not really a big thing.

But I know some still have a lot of dvd's.

I personally only have 9 or 10, excluding dvdrs which are all single layer so a non issue.

I was wondering if anyone can help me with this issue I've had since purchasing this BD player. Whenever I start a disc and press "Top Menu" or "Pop Up/Menu" on the remote to skip the previews, I receive a message saying "this option is currently prohibited..." I've also updated the firmware to the most recent one. I've compared this playing "Watchmen" on this player and my friend's S370, where I would have to skip through each preview individually on the N460, but pressing the "Top Menu" button took me directly the disc menu on the S370. Thanks in advance.

What you describe is very common. I think some DVD's are like that too.

You also can't use the skip ahead button. The only thing you can do is fast forward.

the strange thing is that it differs between blu-ray players even if I play the same disc

Could really use some advice or thoughts:

I'm renting BD from Netflix. I popped in "500 Days of Summer" last night and it wouldn't play for me beyond the menu screen (hitting buttons on the remote did nothing). Some online research revealed that the N-460 needed a firmware upgrade in order for playback.

So I went ahead and upgrade the firmware by burning it onto a disc. The firmware update went smoothly. I checked my settings and am now running .146.

I go to play "500 Days....." and everything starts out fine for a few seconds. Then it starts jittery playback and eventually skips four chapters by itself. When I attempt to go to the previous chapters it won't play.

So either the update didn't solve anything or the issue is with the disc. I don't see any major scratches and even cleaned it with a microfiber cloth. So do you think it's an issue with the BD player or the disc itself? This is probably the 10th BD I've played but the first that gave me issues.

I'm very frustrated by this. I do think it's an issue with the disc itself. I'm going to take it to my local BB tomorrow and kindly ask they play it to see if there is an issue.
It sounds like the disc may have become warped. Heat can cause a disc to become just slightly warped causing jitter issues. I'd have Netflix send out a second copy of the film to see if you get the same problem. If you get the same problem, chances are the N460 just isn't digging that BD. But chances are you won't have the same problem. Friend of mine had the same issue with the BD of Avatar that she rented, she got home and it did the same exact ****. So she had them send her a second copy and it worked fine.
Thanks for the reply. I went to my local BB yesterday and they were nice enough to play the BD on one of their players. It was indeed the disc. In fact it started to have issues even earlier on in the film on their Panasonic BD player. So I just contacted Netflix as you suggested and am getting my replacement disc today.

While upgrading the firmware wasn't a huge pain I do hope I'll never have to do it again.

I can't get my 460 to show the HOME title page with all the functions -- tried using another HDMI input that works (use it for the HDTV signal) and same problem.

I had this problem earlier this year where I couldn't get past the SONY Blu-Ray screen page but now I'm not even seeing that.

UPDATE: Like the last time, after some inactivity, I just turned it on this morning and voilla -- it worked.

This has happened before, where it turns on all of a sudden and last time I had no issue for months. Only thing I can add is that I was on vacation for 8 days but what that would have to do with what seems like a handoff issue is beyond me. All cables worked, all inserted, nothing changed from last night when I couldn't even get to the BLU-RAY screen.
So a firmware update to make this blu ray player 3D ready - probably not going to happen?
I have Verizon FiOS and I like their universal remote. I've tried programming the "DVD" button on the FiOS remote to work with the N460 but I can't seem to get the universal remote to recognize it no matter what code I enter (0560, 1560, 0891, 1060, 1458). I also tried 1516 as mentioned in some earlier posts but that didn't work either. Has anyone managed to get this to work? If so, I'd appreciate if you let me know what code you used.

thanks

Haven't pulled the string on a new Blu-Ray player yet. This BDP-N460 seems to have everything I would like -- with the exception of Google TV, which supposedly is "coming this fall to Sony Blu-Ray players." Has anyone heard of these upcoming Blu-Ray players? The only mention of such a Sony box I've seen is in the initial announcements of Google TV, months ago.

i see the best price $104.99 at -> topbluray.blogspot.com

I own a Panasonic 35 and just bought the N460 yesterday at Best Buy for $109. I just could not pass it up for the price. Hooking it up over the weekend and will use the two for upscaling and Blu. Great buy and a good looking unit.

I just downloaded the latest firmware for a friend and got version 169 dated 9-29-10. He has been having trouble playing Spartacus: Blood and Sand. He hasn't done the upgrade yet so I don't know if it fixed the problem.

You got me all excited! But then when I check it is the same old 'coming this fall' that I've been seeing for months...

I did. I went to the update and it said it was already done. Then refreshed my internet channels, and it is still the 'coming this fall' GRRR!!!

Netflix Adopts DD+ for Streaming

By Mark Fleischmann October 20, 2010 — The audio part of Netflix streaming video rentals is about to get a lot better with the adoption of Dolby Digital Plus surround.

Dolby Digital Plus is a seeming contradiction: a lossy audio codec, but one that is capable of high resolution when the bitrate is high enough. It offers the prospect of a major sonic improvement for consumers who rent movies and other a/v content online from Netflix. In fact, it is actually the first surround codec used in Netflix streaming.

The first device to support Dolby Digital Plus in Netflix rentals will be the Sony PS3 gaming console. DD+ is already supported in most Blu-ray players, surround receivers, and some mobile phones.

To enable Dolby Digital Plus, PS3 owners should click on the Video icon, the What's New icon, and install. As a side benefit, the streaming disc previously required by Netflix is no longer needed. Nintendo's Wii is also going disc-less, though it still does not support HD resolution.

As this story was going to bed, someone who had just begun streaming Netflix on PS3 told us that DD+ was available on only a few titles including 30 Rock. Presumably more content will find its way into the pipeline in due time.

See joint Netflix/Dolby press release. The PlayStation blog offers a video demo of disc-free Netflix.

So Hopefully Sony/Netflix will do right by us N460/Xross bar users

Got a refurb N460, generally very happy, but saw something odd last night.

Tried to stream "The Secret of Kells" on Netflix. I have HDMI out going to a Sony tube HDTV (KV-36HS500, I think). When the movie starts, the video signal completely drops out so that the TV flashes the video input name, but the audio (to my receiver) continues. If I click Return or Home on the remote, the Netflix or Home on-screen display returns.

The movie title is supposed to be HD, but I tried another HD title (Cake Boss season 2) and it played without a hitch. I've never had trouble streaming anything else over the Blu-ray player.

We ended up having to watch the title streaming to the Wii (non-HD).

Has anyone seen anything like this? Can anyone get "The Secret of Kells" to stream for them?

Thanks!

Gonna check BRB. It's OK N Streaming "The Secret of Kells" right now, no problem. OK testing through Sony receiver Still great! Wow this Looks incredible in HD. But Netflix has been having issues the last 3days. They issued me a 1 day credit the other day.(sent email saying sorry they had streaming issues) But it's playing in HD over my N460.

Well I just noticed that we have Hulu Plus, finally it has been added. But maybe you peeeps already knew it. Refresh the channel and it should be there.

Now is it going to be worth the $10 a month, I don't know, maybe if they add a bunch more I could easily see it being worth while to me.

Other then that I am really kind'a on the fence.
