Samsung S, A, C Panel Differences: 2009 LCD Line-Up - Page 9

My Sony panel is an amva 3. I wouldn't consider this bad. It has better viewing angles than spva panels. The blacks are superb.

If I was actually on the hunt for another panel, I'd get the 32" B650, since that's another amva 3.

I suspect that if Sony begins using amva 5 next year, you'll know, because they'll use a native contrast ratio of 16,000:1 that AUO is claiming.

Sony must have a deal with AUO that they have to give AUO's claimed native contrast ratio- 5000:1. It ranks higher than the native contrast ratio given by the spva panels- 3800:1. Although these panels tend to get a little blacker, they may sacrifice some shadow detail.

Basically, I'd be more concerned with Chi Mei panels and some of the spva stuff than AUO, their panel seems to be solid.

Sony claims a native contrast ratio of 3800:1 on the xbr9 and the z5100, so not sure where you are getting that 5000:1 from.

Go to Sony's literature on the V series for 2009. There's a pdf on the esupport.sony.com website.

native contrast is listed at 5000:1

I tried to contact Sony customer service, who took me to someone else, who wasn't willing to discuss the difference.

They used AUO amva3 for their V series and probably amva for their S series, since that panel has a 3000:1 native contrast in Sony's literature on the panel- the exact contrast AUO claims on this panel at their website.

AUO makes some panels for Sony, and the rest were their spva joint venture panels from S-LCD with Samsung. That's changing to Sharp, who will probably be supplying uv2a panels for Sony's higher end models, but AUO is still a partner, which could mean that the S and V series will continue using AUO. Could change though.

Regarding my ln46b630 w/ a "Version" AC06 panel, I'm thinking this an AUO A-MVA panel, or something similar. And because is looks pretty good I believe it is truely equivalent (or very close) to Samsung's S-PVA panel, which is Version "SQ..". The C panel is another matter. I agree w/ post by gmarceau, above, that the AUO panels seem pretty good.....I'm sure the SPVA panel is a bit better.

Hi Guys,

Well the tech just left and he confirmed the fact that the viewing angles DID seem a little odd. He said it looked more like I had an old rear projector tv than a new 55" LCD.

He's going to contact samsung and suggest a swap.

We'll see.

test,

Does all Samsung screen size 52" and up uses "S" panel only? Seems like the AUO and CMO only applies to screen size below 52"

SQ or SS Panels are supposedly better so if you have a choice, SQ first then SS

Do we not have panel info for the B6000? I don't see any references to the B6000 in this thread.

Just got my LE46B655, Version start with a "A" so its a AUO panel I guess. Im happy with the quality so far, but I dont know how to search after failtures, please tell me.

Shall I look from right and left to see if the color is washed of and such? Give me some failture-search tips. So I can see if I will try to replace it with a S panel.

Or if I just should enjoy the TV.

Hi fellas, long time lurker first time poster here. This is certainly an interested thread, some of it goes straight over my head but i'm getting there.

Apologies if this has been mentioned already, but I dont see much reference to the new LED range in here. Due to the 'pretty' aesthetics of the UN40B8000/UE40B8000 and the all powerful nature of the Mrs, we will shortly be getting this model. Would anyone be kind enough to confirm that this A/C/S issue is seen in the B8000 as well, specifically the 40inch version? If so, and if anyone has one of these sets, could you comment on which panel type you have and what your opinion of it is? I'm not keen to drop so many good old english pounds into what may essentially be a lottery.

Thanks in advance

I just got a Samsung 40" LN40B550 on Sunday and it has a SQ03 panel and I have to say I'm 100% satisfied. I read SD quality wasn't very good on this set but I think it is more than acceptable, not the best I've seen but far from the worse. HD content looks awesome, the set has awesome viewing angles, close to that of my PN58A550 Samsung 58" Plasma. I love the black levels for a LCD and motion is smooth and not jittery at all. I've played some fast moving FPS games from my PC and Street Fighter IV from PC and Xbox 360 and everything is smooth and looks great. Lag is pretty much unnoticeable too. When I bought this TV many were S panels and many were A panels, I saw no C panels on any Series 5 TV's. They had the B550 and B500 models in stock in 40" and 46" versions.

I was down to buying one of three TV's and 40-42" was the maximum size I had room for. The Samsung LN40B550 ($799), Sony Bravia KDL40V4100 ($699) or Toshiba REGZA 40XV645U. The Toshiba looked good had good viewing angles and was 120Hz but was a little jittery by comparison. The Sony looked best in SD and had the most input options but had the worse viewing angles. The black levels of the Samsung was the best and the Sony and Toshiba blacks were very good but not quite as good as Samsung.

This is a second TV, it sits to the side of my computer desk so I almost never watch it from straight on. I'm typically sitting 30"-36" from the TV and to the left side of it, so great viewing angles were important to me. I would have went Plasma but I couldn't find a 40-42" 1080P plasma in my price range of $800 and I want to use my PC on it a lot so image retention was a concern. Because of where I sit I also really liked the swivel base on the Samsung.

I'm watching some Hockey on it right now and it looks amazing, Monday Night Football also looked great. I really couldn't be happier with this TV, it has exceeded my expectations.

Ok reading this thread I must say that most of it is over my head, however if I learned one thing is that there is no way to know what you're buying unless you see the box?

V4100 should have the same exact panel as your samsung B550 and the same viewing angles and black levels once set up correctly in the picture settings

I own a sony 32XBR6 which is just a smaller V4100 sony (they dont make 32V4100's sony just labels them as the XBR for that size TV because its their top of the line in that size) I has a S-LCD panel in it just the same as your B550

I agree that Sony's processing is much better with SD than any other brand i've seen yet

anyways glad your happy with the TV

I know the V4100 uses Samsung screens, but I can tell you right now it doesn't look as good viewing from the side. Not even close really. My B550 lists the dynamic contrast ratio as 70000:1 and the V4100 is listed as 25000:1. I'm not saying the V4100 looked bad, it just seemed much duller when viewing from the side compared to the Samsung. This is with both TV's configured pretty much exactly the same.

I don't know if Sony ever uses lower grade screens like Samsung does. I saw a 40" Samsung last night with a C panel on the side sticker at Costco and it doesn't look as good as my A panel, sure in store compared to home isn't the exact same thing but from the side it looked very dull and somewhat grainy. I don't have that problem with a S panel at home.

Are all Sony TV's Samsung panels (S Panels) or do they sometimes get the cheaper panels from other companies or rebuy from Samsung or something?

I don't think I ever was as frustrating with figuring out what to purchase as I am with HDTVs. First I wanted a Panasonic plasma, apparently those are full of phosphor trail and random black level increases issues. Ten I say forget it I'll get the "next best thing" Samsung LCD, now I don't want one because I have no clue if I am purchasing something inferior based on this thread. Totally lost
post #264 of 933
Yea I was on the same damn boat GSR. It took me about 2 months of back and forth almost pulling the trigger a few times almost once on a plasma then deciding not to at the last minute. The reason I decided not to go with plasma is the image retention issues, seeing as how I game and pc on it, and LCD's are sharper for PC text. I would say the pricing on b650's are superb now my advice is to simply ask your dealer to select an SQ panel just to be on the safe side.

I also game some on the PS3. I suppose if I'm purchasing locally I could ask, but often if you're hunting for a deal through slickdeals or the like it's an online deal (something like Amazon), then you're sort of SOL. What a miserable experience.

Hi all,

I want to buy a 32" Samsung LCD for my bathroom. Do I still have to go through the panel lottery? Are the C and A panels more common in the smaller sets cause of cheaper price? I would buy online cause it has free shipping but worried I'm going to get stuck with a crappy Ching chao panel or whatever the hell its called.

this is likely caused by samsungs use of a glossy screen vs sony use of a semi-matte screen

and for the record the LCD is not samsung made it is S-LCD made a separate company jointly owned by both sony and samsung 49/51 % making samsung the primary owner

lastly advertised contrast ratios be them dynamic or not are not accurate in one bit ever period. they are made up to sell TV's to people

I think you'd be surprised what most retailers will do, even online ones, if you just give them a call. I called the place I got mine from that is an online retailer, for an unrelated issue, but I'm pretty sure if I had asked them to pick me out a certain one they would. Good Luck.

Hmm I was going to order online from future shop but weary of them actually following my order if I ask for an S panel. Heck most people working out of their warehouses probably have very little knowledge of TVs in general and just work there as a shipper. I don't want to risk getting a crap ching chong panel then have to take it back to the store for another...too much hassle.

With that being said I'm just gonna head over to my walmart shortly and pick one up. Plus my godfather works there so he can get me an additional 10% off which works out to be $47. So it'll be worth it for me just to buy local.

Futureshop? Never heard of them. I would stick with an authorized dealer to ensure better service.
