5.1 set-up on 7.1 receiver, do I use the rear jacks or surround jacks for back spkrs?

title changed from "Help with YPAO for 5.1 from 7.2 receiver (Yamaha RX-V1065)":

I recently purchased a new HT audio set-up, which is my first real set-up and I'm having a few issues. The main issue is that I tried to run the YPAO and keep getting an error. Before I go into it, here is the set-up:

Yamaha RX-V1065
Klipsch VF-35 x2 (front)
Klipsch VC-25 x1 (center)
Klipsch VS-14 x2 (rear)
Klipsch Sub-12

I went with a 7.2 to somewhat "future proof" my investment, but couldn't afford the 7.1 set-up right now. So the issue; I ran the YPAO and it says that no surrounds are connected and will not complete the set-up. I looked in the manual, but it says "when using surround speakers you need to connect surround L/R speakers". Is there any way around this? Should I hook the speakers up different?

The space is somewhat small. I had to move to an apartment for the year to do some training out in DC, so I'll have more space after that. I have the TV on a stand, the fronts pretty close to the sides of the TV (6" or so), the center on a shelf under the TV, the sub in the corner to the left of the LF, and the rears (where there is the most minimal space to work with) are directly behind the couch in-between the wall and couch. They are on either end behind the armrest portion. The reason I'm mentioning this is to see if they should just be hooked up as surrounds, or will I just get the same error? Thanks for any help.

hey stealth, I have the 665 and klipsch III's plus 10'' sub and have my surrounds connected to the surrounds (4th and 5th connectors looking at the pic you have) plus I have my sub on subwoofer 1 connecton under the pre out box , everything seems to work good so far..... I'm not and expert either, so mine might be set up wrong too ! heheh, but I got it sounding pretty good
good luck

yeah, I think I have the subwoofer thing figured out. since it is a 7.2 and there are 2 sub ports under the preout section, I figured those are the right ones. When you say you have your surrounds hooked to surrounds, do you mean you have a 5.1 also with the rears hooked up to the surround jacks? did you get the YPAO to work?

yeah, I have 5.1 and hooked to the surrounds , not surround back, those are for the 7.1 if I understand it correctly..... it took a few times to get YPAO to work too, had a error, w-1 , then ran it again and it set up properly, then I fine tuned it . Really like the 665 and speaker set up.... way better than what I had.....

Thanks for the help. I was hoping to get some acknowledgement from some of the senior members that this is the route to go. I hooked the rears up to the surround jack and was able to run the YPAO. Just not sure if this is the proper way to hook a 5.1 up to a 7.1 receiver. Thanks again though.

For 5.1, you definitely need to connect to the surround terminals, not the surround back terminals. As far as placement, the ideal placement for surround speakers is on the side, above and slightly to the rear of the listening position. Here's Dolby's layout diagrams:

Building on this a little, since the features seem to be available on 7.1 receivers (in this case HK 254 7.1) however I'm only interested in a 5.1 set up in my small living room to keep things simple. Will mine make a good home for a 7.1 receiver with a 5.1 forever setup? I'm kind of stuck on the 5.1 and upping the power and HDMI features to the 254 from the 154, which might be 5.1. Is this a mistake? Sorry to stir an old thread but it seems relevant. If no help I'll start a new one. thanks!

I can think of no good reason to avoid 7.1 receivers for a 5.1 setup. 5.1 receivers are typically the budget models.

Michael is right, of course. 7.1 receivers work fine for 5.1, 3.1, 2.1 or even 2.0 (a pure stereo speaker configuration). (I'm running a 7.1 receiver as 5.0: no subwoofer.)

You can either disable the surround back speakers when you manually configure a 7.1 receiver, or, if the receiver has Audyssey or some other automatic speaker setup function, that auto-setup will disable any speaker channels that generate no sound.

The sound that would have gone to the disabled channels will be correctly folded into the working ones.

Boy that is great news. I've grabbed an HK 254. Based on what you guys have said i've been reading the manual. This has revealed an outstanding benefit I've never considered, the rear 7.1 outputs are available using a 5.1 setup to reconfigure for remote location control! So I can add a set in another room and either use the HK additional HE 1000 IR receiver or an aftermarket. That's terrific. Thanks guys.
