Windows 7 sharing homegroup

So I have a bit of a unique situation (I think, maybe i'm totally wrong here). I live in an apartment complex, and they provide internet for each room in each apartment/townhouse, included in rent, so we couldn't change even if we wanted. I don't particularly mind because it is pretty good internet.

Recently I purchased a new HTPC. Works great. Everything plays like a champ on it. I put windows 7 on it.
I would like to connect my machine in my room, with the htpc downstairs. They can see each other on the network. However, I can see about 100 other computers as well. I currently have the Homegroup feature in use, I believe, no real way to check because homegroups don't have names. This means I created a homegroup upstairs, and typed the password in downstairs.

How can I protect my media, as in I don't want other people to be able to access my materials? Is the homegroup password enough?
What is the proper method to share files on said 'private network'?
How can I remove things that have already been shared because I get this popup in my multiple attempts that says 'this has already been shared.'?

Sorry I'm not very good at this networking stuff. I'll deal with the fact that the streaming is god awful slow after that

Thanks!

I'd buy a $50 linksys router and plug the wan port in one of your network jacks. that will isolate you from the rest of the complex and create a more secure private network. then you just need to plug all of your computers into the lan ports on the router.

running cables between rooms or floors will be an issue, but you may be able to reuse their wiring in a new way. it all depends on were the other end of the cables connected to the network jacks in your place are terminated.
