Why did Leno retire from The Tonight Show if he was going to have another show?

He was tired of 11:35pm starting time?
Good thread.
I'll be checking in.

I wonder what Kanye "Douche" West will say tonight.
Hopefully nothing.
He was forced to leave "Tonight" by nervous NBC execs who thought they'd lose Conan if HE didn't get "Tonight".

That deal was made five years ago.

Last fall, when NBC execs feared Leno might be headed to ABC as competition, they started to hatch a new plan. He agreed to it this winter. This is the result.

There are a number of articles about the show, how it came to be, and its projected prospects, over on the "Hot Off The Press" sticky.

Probably had something to do with his aging demographic unable to stay up to 11:30 anymore.

Reminds me of the Ed Sullivan Show. Aging Seinfeld stand-up comic for the aging demographic and some rockers for the "chickadees" that the aging demographic can't stand.

Something the whole family can watch together.

Should be interesting - heard there will normally only be one guest with the rest being comedy. The show has been getting mega hype by our local NBC affiliate.

This is the funniest thing I've seen in a long time:

The question is whether Leno hurts Conan and if so, how bad. Hurt Conan (whose numbers are already down) and you potentially hurt NBC's "Today" show too, because if people are turning away from O'Brien that means the TV's on a different channel when they wake up in the morning. Yes, even in the age of the DVR and remote control clicker, this is what some network executives think, even if there isn't much logic to it any longer.

Tha's brutal! LOL.

But I don't remember Johny Carson's audience being the young crowd.

Typically 2nd acts don't work, but Jay is hard working so hopefully he makes something fresh and new.

It's official, Conan is a virus. He's even hurting the Today show.

My TV sure as hell ain't on NBC overnight. Jimmy FAILIN' has used up all my pity and Conan gets on my nerves now. I like The Daily Show and Craig Ferguson better.

Looking forward to Leon tonight.

Ooooh, NBC has a new snipe. I'm really not digging that all lowercase letter text. It's so wimpy and lame. I prefer a bold, small caps font.

The opening title and theme are really awful.

I'm not too crazy about the introduction music and the layout of the introduction. URFloorMatt, I agree.
The Cheaters skit was OK.
This already blows Conan away. At leas Jay has a reasonable set, unlike that huge cold cave on TTS.
This already blows.

I was going to wait for Seinfeld, but I can't stand another minute of this.
Has NBC pulled its support already? I'm not getting any peacock in the lower left corner.

At 20:00 minutes in, fresh and new has yet to appear on my screen...

10:25---Fresh and new appeared. Jay Leno, no desk.

Second bit was a bit lame, but then again those were always hit or miss on Tonight Show too.

And heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr's OPRAH!!
OK, when does the comedy kick in?
Well, Seinfeld has been funny, but he won't be back tomorrow night.
OK. I went back to watch a couple minutes of Seinfeld.

Those big overstuffed chairs remind me of "The Larry Sanders Show" when they wanted Larry to look like a jerk.

(Not that there's anything wrong with that. )
I liked the Seinfeld bit a lot.

Did you miss the first 10 minutes?

It really is like Sullivan. You have to sit through stuff you don't like waiting for the one act you do like. That only works when there are no other channels to watch.

I'm switching to "The Way We Were" on TCM.
Obama piece kinda funny (with no small effort from Burrelles transcripts and the video editing staff)
Yes, I agree. I thought it was good.

This is a bad idea as it gets, not the show itself, but for poor Conan.

People will think this is the Tonight Show at an earlier time, even though it's called "The Jay Leno Show".

It's earlier, at a more reasonable time to get more audience. By the time this is over, people will go to bed.

Why watch Conan and the Tonight Show if they just saw a variety show 35 mins ago?

This will not not bode well with Conan.

This is a very bad idea for NBC.

Wow the Kanye West "apology" was painful. Jay patting him on the leg?
Yeah, I was just telling my friend about that.
Never seen Jay pat a dude on the leg. I thought I saw Kayne's eyes get watery.
