Also, while the receiver is on, and in HDMI "THROUGH" mode, it generates a lot of excess heat, which surprised me cause essentially all the receiver is doing is passing through the HDMI signal.

Other than that, the receiver sounds great!

Ok, so does the 23/21 support HDMI passthru while in standby mode? I'd like to be able to quickly switch on the tv and dish box and not have to also have on all the other equipment, thus HDMI audio/video passthru are necessary. Is it supposed to work with any TV or just Kuro compatible displays? Man, all these "compatibility" special feature sets marketing people love to sell stuff with are really more of a hinderence, imho.

I can NOT get it to pass through the HDMI while in standby, it must be powered on to get audio/video to my display. Pioneer claims it will pass through with KURO compatible displays. Since my display (Toshiba) is not KURO compatible, I can not verify this.

Another note, I can not have the receiver pass the HDMI signal from my Motorola cable box to both of my displays simultaneously. It will only output to one at a time (HDMI out 1 or HDMI out 2, HDMI out all will not work). I imagine this is an issue with the cable box HDMI output, just wondering if anyone else experienced this..

I just got the 23 last week. But I have problem to hook up the hdmi with my htpc. I have the nVidia N9600GT video card that hdmi out both to the 23 and my pio plasma 5080HD. And then from 23 to my Sony projector. However, the projector can only able to display the content from my pc for less than 5 sec then the 23 will hang and no more output to projector but the plasma still display just fine and the pc is working properly. So did anyone able to hook up their htpc through hdmi to their elite? then what video card did you use?

Hello....I have a couple of questions, as I just purchased the Elite 23 THX and am waiting for it to arrive. Please remember, I am pretty stupid understanding all of this.

1...Can any of you tell me what type and/or gauge of speaker cable I should get?

2...I purchased Definitive Technology Pro Cinema 800 5.1 speaker system and I think
I can use banana plug on the one end of the speaker cable to the speakers, BUT,
someone mentioned that on the back of the Elite receiver, I do not need banana
ends into the receiver speaker jacks, EXCEPT that they are needed for the sub
woofer connection. It this true and does anyone have any knowledge of the
this 23 THX receiver and/or speakers to advise me?

3...Many have suggested for someone like me to get one of these new Harmony
remotes which will control all of my equipment. If true, what is the newest model
and/or what model does everyone suggest I get?

I have the speakers listed above, the LG 47LH90 TV, a new Slim PS3, and my music only I-Pod. I also have a Time Warner Cable Scientific Atlanta 8250 Cable Box, and of course the Elite 23 THX receiver that's on the way.

Thanks

Dave

. . . . , but if I am showing STEREO on the 21, should I not expect to get subwoofer action?

Thank you.

If your audio select is set to (or showing) "Stereo" you will only get audio outputs to your R/L speakers - no audio is being sent to your sub. To change this, chose one (any one, of your choice) of the surround modes, and your sub will be engaged.

I am assuming that you set up your AVR so that it knows exactly what speakers you have connected (R/L + sub, and no other speakers).

Right now I own a Yamaha 6160 and it only has 2 hdmi in and only upconverts to 480p my ? is that my cable box is hooked thru hdmi to the receiver to samsung A750 the cable box only shows 720p or 1080i when in the cable box menu - will the 21 upconvert the cable box to 1080P thru hdmi? Also how well does the Auto level control work I hate it when commercials come on and it gets so loud my yamaha does not help lol Is there a big diffrence between the 21 and 1019? Thanks for any info.

Anyone thanks

Ahh, the fix. Thank you for the quick response.

Any way for me to listen to music (apple tv, bd, or ipod) and watch TV at the same time with all running HDMI through receiver?

Thank you.

I have a similar issue with my 21. I'd be watching an HD show and VSX21 shows DolbyDigital. When a commercial would come on in Stereo, sometimes there would be no sound. This also happened when changing TV channel from an HD station to a Non HD station. The only way to get sound back was switch inputs and switch back.

Due to several othere issues I sent the unit back for an exchange. We'll see if the same issue happens again with the new unit.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Thank you.

I had this issue and found that what was at fault was my Directv HDDVR, I got a new one and now those issues (exactly what you had) are gone.

Dave,

I think I am as new to AVR's as you may be, so take this as you see fit. I would not normally respond to something like this because of my low level of expertise, but seeing as I have DT ProCinema 800 fronts and a Prosub 1000, I thought I would give it a shot.

1. I had prewired 12 gauge when I built my house. I have been told it was overkill, to boot it is way too difficult to bend and twist in small places. I think the Monster cable I picked up is 16, and seem to works fine. Any one who can offer more info, please do.

2. Monster clips were easiest to use. I did use them in the back of my 21thx. Way easier than trying to get bare wire in there. As far as the sub goes, I use a sub wire from the sub to the Sub pre out on the receiver.

If I am way off, someone please correct me. Dave pre-apologies for any misinformation.

good luck.

Can I hook up my VSX-23 using COMPONENT cables IN from uverse box and HDMI OUT from vsx-23 to TV? Any special inputs I need to select on receiver to do this?

If I have the uverse box hooked up via HDMI IN and OUT, will that always overide the component hook up so I won't be able to view thru component?

I'm trying to troubleshoot to see if audio and picture drop outs are an hdmi issue so want to be able to flip from component input and hdmi input. Uverse has had problems in past with HDMI but in searching the uverse threads people say this has been resolved.

Thanks for any help

The ALC will work, but I find the overall sound dynamics are not nearly as good as without it, but I guess that's the idea. I can't say I'd use it for everyday listening and have just continued to put up with the loud commercials. You can use it for mellow evening listening I guess. It works like the Audessey Dynamic EQ, no better, no worse.

Yes to Comp in and HDMI out.

You can hook up both, or one or the other. With both hooked up, the default is the HDMI, but you can go into the menu of the AVR and temporarily change it back and forth. Without going into the menu, I think the SIG SEL for signal select will toggle between Auto, HDMI, ANALOG, PCM and Digital. This is for the audio input though and may not be changing the video in, but you can definitely do it in the input setup menu.

Well well. I finally ordered VSX-21TXH from 6ave today in the name your price offer. I got it $50 less than what my local dealer can offer. Denon 2310CI really gave a tough competition in the decision making as it is only $50 more than vsx-21. But, i went for Pio

Thanks CT and WabKab. Ct or anyone I am a little new to all this stuff, but Im not sure if I am reading things right but does the 21txh only upconvert analog and not HDMI signals? I am just still lost so if I run analog thru my cable box to 21 and then hdmi out to tv it will upconvert that to 1080P - would it up convert hdmi from cable box to 21 to tv? My box only sends 720P and 1080i signals does the 21 only upconvert sd signals thru analog? hope this makes sense I just hate watching 720 and 1080i signals when they can maybe be 1080P. The Denon 2310CI can do hdmi to hdmi upconvert but I like the Pioneers so much more. Thanks

Denon 2310CI is very easily judged as better upconverting player theoretically. But, can you notice the difference practically? Not so easy. Denon has not enabled all the features of ABT2010. You can read about that in Denon's thread.
The hdmi to hdmi upconversion might be an issue if you think so. Not many players have the ability to output 480i through hdmi. I decided to go for Oppo player which has much better upconversion than any of the denon receivers. And it is also universal player which can play both PAL and NTSC source. That made my choice making much easier.

I must take this back. It is still an issue. I had hidden the duplicate SD channels on the guide, but when I finally switched to one without DD, the audio was gone. Either I turn the input knob back and forth, remote control input to another and back, or I run a digital out for sound. Lastly, what I had done was turn off DD in the Directv menu which worked and I use the Neural THX mode which is very good. Just hate that things never work perfectly as they should

K I am lost now....Isnt oppo a Blue Ray player? I am just askn about a receiver that up converts HDMI to HDMI? cable box from 720P and 1080i to 1080P....I have a PS3 and a Samsung 1600 blue ray...but what will change my Cox Cable from 720 and 1080i to video 1080P????? Thanks

I just hooked everything up and simply cannot get the VSX-21 to recognize my Ps3 (fat), I assume this is a handshake or HDCP issue. The same Ps3 and same HDMI cable was used previously with this plasma (plugged directly into my Pio PDP-5040) and worked fine. Now that it is plugged into the VSX-21 I'm getting nothing. The cable box is connected to the 21 with an identical HDMI cable and it works perfectly. I have tried different combinations of powering up sequences to no avail. I have also plugged it into the BD and other HDMI inputs in the 21 also to no avail. I'm at a loss at this point .. does anyone have any suggestions? I have not seen any similar posts so perhaps I am the only one with this issue.

Thanks
It seems to me, from what I have been reading on several of the different threads, that every Flat Panel TV and A/V receiver has its share of issues, adjustments, menu setting adjustments, etc. Looks to me like you just have to decide which TV and Receiver will be the least problematic.

Here are my questions, but first...Right now I have 2 Sammy TV's, but they are NOT connected to any audio system. They are both hooked up to my Time Warner HD Cable BOX. The TV's are also connected with PS3's for viewing DVD's and Blue Rays. The audio is just out of the TV, and picture is just from the TV with the adjustments made after we got it. I guess pretty simple.

I just finished making room in my finished basement to take up half the space and making it sports room and decided to purchase another TV, the LG 47LH90, and a new slim PS3 for Blue Rays and DVD's, and Definitive Technology Pro Cinema 800 5.1 speakers. The TV, again, will be connected to the Time Warner Cable Box. I am going to purchase the receiver in the next few days to go with this system. Probably the Pioneer Elite 23THX.

Seems to me, when you decide to go this route, the simpleness goes away, because now the receiver is taking over so much including the picture quality of the TV, up conversion that I read about, handshake issues, pass through stuff and a ton of other things.

QUESTION...If my current set-up seems fine just viewing the TV and PS3 without an audio system can't the receiver just act as a very simple connection just to get audio and surround sound from the TV and PS3 and the receiver not have anything to do with the TV picture and all of these setting problems?

I hope I am asking this right. I'm happy with my TV picture without a receiver having anything to do with it. Right now, I just turn on the TV, and watch shows, sports and movies in HD from my Time Warner Cable Box. All I want now is to add receiver and 5.1 speaker quality audio to what I am watching from the TV and PS3, and from my music I-Pod. This is what I would like, but not sure if it's possible or if it works this way.

Thank-you for any help or suggestions. Maybe I should just pay the money and find someone who can connect and set all of this stuff, plus get one of those ISF technicians with their equipment and let them calibrate the TV and whatever else.

Thanks
Dave

I have a 21 coming from 6ave.com. Can't wait to get everything hooked up!
With my 21thx, if I have receiver on and power down with the remote or front of unit, shouldn't the unit stay in standby mode? It stays in for about 5 seconds, then powers down completely (blue litght shuts off)

Also, I have not dialed in remotes just yet (i.e. tv, receiver, bd, cable box) so if I turn on tv then receiver, receiver comes on, then shuts down after a few seconds. I have to wait, then turn on receiver again. Anyone have thoughts on this?

Thank you.

Myles.

My set up now is for the center I have Definitive Technology ProCenter 1000 and the fronts I have Definitive Technology ProMonitor 800. Sub is Definitive Technology ProSub 800. Now my receiver is the Onkyo 606. Will there be a noticeable sound difference and upscaling going with the Pioneer. Should I upgrade. Thanks

Sorry to hear that as I have pretty much the same set up but without the issues. I have my ps3 running into the bd slot and my cable box into hdmi 1 with the out feeding to my panny 54V10. The 21 swaps over when I load a blu ray with out having to change it on my remote which is kinda nice. I dont really power anything up in any kind of order so not sure what the issue could be.....
