Battleship: The Movie and more

So for those of you wondering what childhood memory Hasbro would sellout next, it appears it's the beloved board game 'Battleship'.

http://www.aintitcool.com/node/42369

Peter Berg will be directing the film, slated for July 1, 2011, which is before his sequel of Hancock.

I'm a "cautionary" fan of Berg's (sometimes he gets it so right, and sometimes.. so wrong) and I'm just way too curious as to how a film based on this game will end up.. so I'll be seeing it.

What's next? Lite-Brite? Hungry Hungry Hippos? Tiddlywinks?

Could be interesting; I haven't seen a battleship movie in....forever. Unless pirates count.

Apparently Hasbro also has in the works a Monopoly movie and a Candy Land movie. If that wasn't enough, they just struck a deal with Sony for a 'Risk' film:

Are all the comic book properties already bought?

I'm holding out for Snakes N' Ladders.

New details emerged about this.. looks like his prep work for the "Dune" remake inspired him to give us alien battleship wars. Ya.. aliens.

Quote:

According to Berg, the aliens are known as The Regents, and will be portrayed by a combination of live actors with CG. They come from a world similar to ours, and aren’t actually looking to take over humanity or the planet Earth. Instead, they’re on a mission to build a power source in the ocean, which is where they come in contact with a navy fleet. The film will also show us both sides of the story—from the aliens’ perspective, as well as the humans.

He explains away the seeming illogicality of having aliens come to Earth just to fight on the ocean by grounding the alien ships once they hit the ocean. Berg mentions that the ships do fly to Earth, as well as through the atmosphere, but they lose that capability once they land. They’re also not busting out any lasers or fantastical alien weaponry—their weapons will be ballistics-based just like ours.

I have a lot of faith in Peter Berg but this sounds really strange.

It makes perfect sense because when you think of Battleship you think of aliens...

Ummm...

I'm not sure what to say... or think about this one.

How can this be a real movie? Hahahaha!

Wait...it has aliens? My interest is now peaked (I loves me some aliens and can't get enough of it). That trailer has everything. A rockin' 80's song, chicks in bikinis, the "rebel" kid who goes against the grain and wastes his talents, the dad who hates him because he's dating his daughter, and the dad even happens to be his commanding officer!

Then you throw in some bad-ass aliens rockin' some high-tech vehicles and it's the icing on the cake!

Why did they have to license the "Battleship" name again?

Instant fanbase/recognition?

I dunno but I hate when they do that too.

"Battleship the game" has a big fanbase that will be swayed, vs "Battleship the 900 foot long piece of naval technological wonder with enough firepower to level a small country"?

Just not getting the licensing issue, considering "Battleship" (while a game) is also the name of you know....a type of ship.

Be kindof like a company needing to license the name "Monopoly" to claim they are one. Or having to license the name "Sorry" to issue an apology.

They're also using the font the game's name is printed in on some of the promotional materials, and probably have some allusions to the game in the film. (Maybe a variation of the phrase "You sunk my battleship," which will probably get cheers.)

Probably enough to warrant at least a trademark license.

True. My point was buying a license for a font and a one liner is a waste of money since otherwise they appear to be unrelated. Not that Hollywood is concerned about money I guess.

I could understand if the movie was a Jumanji/zathura ripoff with a kid getting sucked into the game....

Anyways point taken.

Well, look at it this way. Buying the "rights" to the Battleship trademark shouldn't be THAT expensive, especially since both sides should benefit. Hasbro would get an extra boost of publicity, and the filmmakers would have another thing to hook the public.

"Hey, remember when you and your little brother played this game until you found out he was moving his ships and so you sat on him for an hour? Well, watch big ships blow up stuff on a big screen! It's almost the same thing!"

I like the very end of the trailer when Liam delivers the line:

"All _ _ _ _ _ _"

And then the big guns lite it up!

I laughed out loud at that one. It's funny, but mostly because it's true. My little brother moved his ships all the time. The rest was the old "pin him down, look him in they eye and slowly drip spittle onto his face while he squirmed". Anyone with a brother would understand

When they shoot at each other, do the projectiles turn red when they hit a ship or white when they hit the water lol

Victor

PS I hope it Liam who utter's the phrase "You sank my battleship!"

Meh. Another CGI'd movie with aliens using a trademark that will likely have nothing to do with the movie.

If you guys want to see the actual game of "Battleship" in a movie being used in a humorous way that will get you closer to the actual board game, check out "BIll and Tedd's Bogus Journey". The scene where they're playing Battleship with Death is pretty awesome! Twister was hilarious too.
