I saw the trailer for this before Cowboys & Aliens over the weekend. My son and I started laughing when the title came up. We both looked at each other and said, you sunk my Battleship. I had no idea Liam Neeson was even in this. Ya gotta pay the bills.

Well, we're running out of powerful, credible villains. The Nazi's are really played out, although Inglorious Bastards and Captain America gave them another shot in the limelight. Can't use Muslims because it pisses off half the world. Can't use right-wing extremists because it pisses off half the country. Can't use the "inscrutable" Chinese because they own us and we have to keep them happy. Can't use communists because they're so... yesterday. The Russians and evil corporate titans are still relatively dependable, but they can't be villainous in every movie.

So all we're left with is aliens. But as an archetype, you can do a lot with 'em. Nobody cares if you kill them or even wipe out entire alien civilizations, and you can give them motivations and weaponry that are still mysterious and awesome. Until we get us some new villains, aliens will just have to do.

Senility? I forget a lot of stuff these days.

Ah, it's robots! I left out evil robots - cylons, terminators, cybermen, a host of adorable children's toys, that bald dude from Westworld, etc. But I sort of lump them in with aliens in that nobody cares if you kill them either.

Time to test the waters with the use of left-wing extremist villians in movies now.

Hey, what about those centrist middle of the road guys? Wanting to take the best from both sides and have a harmonious government. Don't they know you're supposed to pick one side and bash the other relentlessly? They're the real enemies.

You do know that the movie Battle Los Angeles was based actual UFO sighting over Los Angeles in 1942. Google that as well.

Looks like Berg is working with an entire Bruhathkayosaurus dropping

No doubt the studio is thrilled, based on how much the last Transformers made world wide.

I'm going to go against the grain and say it looks awesome. Ok, maybe not "awesome," but I do loves me some alien invasion movies where stuff blows up real good. I don't care if it's called "Battleship" as it's obviously just a name they licensed so Liam Neeson can say at one point "You sank my battleship!" and throw a reference to Transformers into the trailer.
  • Aliens? Check!
  • Humans hopelessly outgunned by superior technology? Check!
  • Good-looking special effects? Check!
  • Things blow up real good? Check!
  • More things blow up real good? Check!

Honestly, if it was called anything but Battleship, people would be looking forward to it more, just like they look forward to any special-effects-laden sci-fi alien invasion extravaganza. I think they made a mistake by licensing that name.
