I too have the same concern. Unlike you, i am connecting the receiver directly to the speakers, and with trinnov reducing the levels this extent, i'm having to turn up the knob quite a bit. And the amps of R972 are not all that powerful ... so i'm a bit worried about when it'll run out of juice.

Does the 972 have discrete volume control for zone 2 & zone 3? I see that zone 2 does, but I do not see much in the manual regarding zone 3. Does zone 3 accept ir commands for its volume?

How long is the included mic cable for the R972?

It's about 15 ft.

I am considering a 972 ....

All audio and video switching will be done way upstream by a whole house Crestron device ...

In that configuration am I likely to have the audio delays (drop outs) when I change channels on a D* satellite service? Satellite TV will be the primary source material for this room, with an occasional Kaleidescape movie or CD thrown into the mix.

its not a drop out - its just a delay before it kicks in - a few seconds

I only get it when switching sources - i dont think you will get it if you dont change sources on the receiver itself

I'm presently looking at this unit, but would like to get a better idea of its performance. Have most of the bugs been worked out by now? Can it be controlled through an Ipad?

I've got a R-972 coming tomorrow.....yahoo! Can't wait! Anyway, will Trinnov operate when using the analog section of this unit? I have an HK AVR-354 whose room correction technology only works when using HDMI. I wondered if the R-972 also works like that? On my short list is an Oppo BDP-93 or 95. If Trinnov works via analog I would be tempted to get the BSP-95. Anyone ever used any of the Oppo's via analog with this unit? Thanks in advance, Devlon

Trinnov on the R-972 is available with 2-channel analog input, any coaxial or toslink digital input or any HDMI input. It is not available for the 7.1 channel analog input.

His statement can be misinterpreted in making you think he was using Trinnov for 5.1/7.1 analog as well.

Is there any way to make "pure audio" work with an hdmi input?

Got my unit this evening.

Set-up has been pretty simple so far, just takes some time.

I had to put my blu-ray player on HDMI1 for a good handshake. My FiOS DVR does fine on either HDMI1 or HDMI2.

A few times I would not get output from my L/R mains when watching the DVR and the signal was 2 channel.

Not liking the remote too much.

Now for some listening...

The Remote Control is the worst I have ever seen bundled with a $1500+ AVR. It really can only control the AVR. It really is a pity as it offers both IR and RF. Only on the DVD do you have access to the Navigation Keys. At first, I thought my Remote was defective until I read the part of the Owners Manual where it lays out what Buttons you have access to on each Input.
I personally use the RC from my TX-NR3008 when I use the 972. Otherwise, I would purchase a Harmony or other Universal Remote as the S/N's is certainly not one.

This thing sounds real good!

For movies, I am very happy with the seamless and coherent surround experience.

For music, even though I had great imaging before, it seems to be a bit better now.

I noticed if you look at the endcaps first, then navigate away, A4Less throws them in for free if you add then add R-972.


What was your setup before?

Yeah..I got the free endcaps, but didn't look at them online first. They add a nice touch.

I actually had a Sherwood P-965 in the system before the R-972. It has served me well in the last 5-6 years or so...was very happy with it.

Going to an HDMI setup, I have gotten rid of 7+ cables!

Thinking about getting this for my basement system. Speaker placement is ok for fr/l/r, real l/r will be to the sides (not back) of couch.

1) Anyone know how well the 972 will deal with 4 ohm speakers? 5 channels driven. I am using an oldie but goodie Sony 777ES at the moment, perhaps the 972 as preamp and 777 as amp.

2) Any chance there is a firmware update that will get rid of the 4-5 second channel pause when switching audio codecs?

3) Anything else I need to know? System includes 3D projector and input from a HTPC. Don't care about networking/airplay etc, anything that streams or audio will be handled by HTPC.

I'm pondering the 972 (+ external amp) compared to the Denon 4311 for ~$1300. Tough decisions.

What 4 ohm speakers do you have?

2) I'd say the likelihood is nil since this thing seems to be discontinued.

Has anyone noticed that the Sherwood USA site is down? I tried IE8 and Firefox, the browser just hangs...

I'm using 4 Dynaudio A80's for L/R/Lrear/Rrear and a Dynaudio C120+ for center. Will have to confirm the model # for the center but am pretty sure - it also appears to be a 6 ohm speaker.

From my experience with their drivers, they tend to like lots of power.

I see that R-977 is on the website. I dont recall seeing this before and I had been looking at the 972 due to the enticing pricepoint at A4L in addition to the Onkyo 709 / 809. Is this the replacement for the 972?

The 977 certainly appears to be the replacement for the 972. I appears that it does not offer Trinnov, but the announced features are about as vague as they possibly can be. There is not even a closeup of the 977. The Website is back. It just no longer has the 972 on it.

Does anyone know if the a4less units come with the +3-6 DB low freq curves?

I don't believe so, but Sherwood seems to be supplying them upon request or several folks here, who have already acquired them, could provide. I have copies I picked up for a friend's 972 if push comes to shove...

Correct...I also got copies from a friend.

But according to the notes and this thread, after calibration, you could just but up the gain on the sub amp.

Now that I think about...does doing that have the same type of effect as the +3/+6 low freq curves? Maybe I will just play with that tonight.

So far, I am pretty impressed with the unit besides it quirks.

Now...if someone has an URC MXF file for the R972, that would really make my day.
