SUCCESS!!!!!

Finally said what the he.. and took the top cover off. I noticed that construction is similar to a motherboard configuration. I checked to see if all connections, plug in connectors were properly seated. I noticed the board with the speaker jacks connected was not fully seated in its slot, (another example of why I hate UPS shipping). I pressed it down firmly and heard a reassuring click. Checked everything I could see, plugged in the power, turned it on and yes I have sound.

Anyone who has ordered this from either acc4less or 1sale I strongly recommend you take off the cover and inspect for shipping issues.

Thanks to all that helped out, now I can wait till after tonight's game to pull my trusty Onkyo 805 from the main theater and will see what all the fuss about Trinnov is all about!

Great tip...thanks. And....... a very impressive HT setup! Congrats! Report back on your Trinnov impressions.

The last 2 weekends I have experimented with one of my R-972s using dipole speakers for both side surrounds and rear surrounds.

I posted a link earlier in this thread to an article advocating reversing the left and right rear surrounds when using dipoles in a 7.1 configuration. Did you experiment with that, and if so what were your thoughts? My 972 arrives Tuesday and I too will be using with dipole surrounds (plus Mirage M3si bipole fronts).

Did Sherwood ever fix the video upscaling issues that old reviews noted?

I heard they fixed the issue where inputs were not capable of having their own setting... So now I'm wondering if they fixed this issue also
post #2136 of 2732
quern:

The video scaling issue that resulted in the wrong perspective was fixed while I was still at Sherwood.

Video settings are global and are not available by input.

I came to the same conclusion on the quirkiness, but many on here seem to be able look past the quirks.
Although all the resetting being needed to run these units is a little disturbing.

Thank god I fixed my 972 myself. 1Saleaday "sorry for the inconvenience, the problem is between you and Sherwood" and of course Sherwood's reply was "look in the top of the receiver and see if anything looks disconnected or out of place, if not YOU will have to send it to us for repair"! Hope everyone gets a good functioning unit as there is no service after the sale.

I don't know the history of video scaling issue. But recently, I used Roku connecting to 972. When streaming Netflix / Vudu 5.1 content, if the video scaling leaves to "Auto", TV won't have signal and the 5.1 won't be recognized by 972. If the video scaler is set to bypass, 972 will recognize 5.1 correctly, TV will receive signal, but no images. I still don't know whether that's a problem with Roku or 972. The PS3 streams 5.1 fine.

Curt,
I truly meant no offense, and I don't doubt the power of the mathematics applied to this technology. I just laughed at the way it was worded wink.gif

When I retire, I would love to get a job with you guys wink.gif

While "Bessel/Fourier Transform" may be introduced in advanced college math, harnessing the transform for audio, as done in the Trinnov family of products, was no simple task, involving scientific grants and years of research to make it practical for consumer use. As the manager at Trinnov for transfering this remarkable technology to Sherwood, I can attest to many many hours consumed to have Sherwood adapt to this new and complex way of processing audio. It's one of the high barriers to entry to having more moderately priced Trinnov successors to the R972, which many of us would love to see happen.

The" Bessel/Fourier Transform" work is indeed a milestone in consumer audio and we look forward to having it more accessable in the audio marketplace. We at Trinnov consider R972 users early adaptors of the technology, willing to deal with the side quirks because of the real benifits Trinnov brings. In part, it will be your interest and on going support that will lead to the development of new products. For that, we thank you.

Cheers,

That was the deal going in... if it arrives DOA 1SaleADay will take it back on your nickle. If you want it repaired it has a 90-warranty through Sherwood via your nickle. At $299 you decided whether to roll the dice or not... how is that no service? Your nickle is often the case even on new equipment... and we are talking about a beyond close-out bargain sale price.

I use HDMI for all my devices, BluRay, Apple TV and Cable box. When I switch inputs and now when I turn the unit on either a black or a pink and green screen show up. There is sound but no picture other than the pink and green or black screen, the only way to get rid of it and get the the picture back is to plug and unplug the unit several times until the picture appears. This has happened on all three units. I returned the second unit directly to Sherwood and Eugene indicated he could not duplicate the problem. So Eugene sent me a brand new third unit 3 weeks ago and I am still having the problem. It must be something in my setup if no one else is having this issue. Can someone give me some advice to determine what is causing the loss of picture when turning on the unit or switching inputs. Constantly rebooting the receiver is a pain.

I don't think it's the Sherwood. When I first got my R-972, my Asus laptop (using hdmi) was doing exactly the same thing as you describe. Then my PS3 (using hdmi) had a green and pink border line across the top and right side of the screen. On the laptop I had to go into the Control Panel and adjust the resolution. I have forgotten now exactly what I did on the PS3, but I believe I went into the setup menu and adjusted the resolution as well. After doing so on both units, the problem immediately disappeared. Why this happened when I plugged them into the Sherwood I have no idea.

Assuming that you're using HDMI

Make sure on Set-up screen that:
* Monitor output = HDMI
* HDMI Audio Output = off

On Video setups Audio Assign is set to blank (___)

I'm not thrilled about the 90 day warranty. Frankly I'd have paid $100 more just to have a "real" warranty. I even looked into SquareTrade but it seems they don't offer warranties on refurbs not sold on Ebay. (Anyone know of an alternative?) My concern is the cost of out-of-warranty repair, combined with the complexity of the receiver. While I paid $299, this is an $1800 unit. After a measly 90 days, will parts/labor for any repair be commensurate with the original price - in which case one repair could easily exceed my purchase price?

I'd suggest purchasing it for one-third of the original price from A4L as you'll receive a three year warranty. Now don't say they are over priced... this is a $1,800 receiver.

Actually, I would consider another one at 299.00/90 day warranty. Most of the problems are " out of the box" if any. You have plenty of time to test everything. I think 200.00 would go al long way towards any repairs myself. You might call Sherwood to see if they know of anyone who will extend the warranty. But in the meantime, just test everything on it as much as you can. .

For double the price ($600 vs $300) I could have bought TWO units from OneSaleADay and had a complete functioning spare. However $600 (let alone $1800) was out of my price range. (Not that $600 isn't still a great deal, it just wasn't in my budget.) My point was that I'd have gladly paid a bit extra for a real warranty (even an extra $100) - not necessarily double.

Yes - I did reverse the left and right rear surrounds before I ran the Trinnov calibration. As the Atlantic notes that you provided the link for specified, that is the proper way to set up rear dipole surround speakers. I recall reading this several times before in Home Theater and Stereophile Guide to Home Theater magazines as well.

If UPS actually uses my signature release, I'll have the unit tonight to play with. If not, then tomorrow.

During calibration, Trinnov recognizes that the cables are crossed. Therefore, if you use remapping, you will loose the intended effect, as Trinnov will correct for this. If remapping is used, we do not recommend crossing signals. You can have it both ways via presets: after cal, do a listening test to find your preference: remapping correction ON (2d or 3d- un-crossed dipoles) or OFF(delay/level- crossed dipoles), while always having on room correction. If yourr preference is to have both choices available based on content (i.e. music or movies), you could set presets to recall either config.

Cheers,

I disagree. 1Sale states that defective merchandise will be replaced if it is stock (read the faq). No where in the faq section does it state the buyer must pay for return shipping of defective merchandise, nor does it say that 1Sale will pay for return shipping, so this is a grey area. A $300 item that doesn't work, regardless of the original price should not cost the purchaser anything to send back UNLESS IT IS SPECIFICALLY stated when you order the item.

1 Sale took over 28 days to ship this receiver, I was lucky to find the loose board on my own, there canned response (deal with the manufacturer) without an offer to replace the unit is poor business practice. Had I not been able to fix the receiver myself, I would have had American Express reverse the charges and it would then be the responsibility of 1Sale to have UPS pick it up.

Best of luck to those that made this purchase, I am content for now, only time will tell if the money was wasted.

I had the same issue. The speakers would only click (extremely quiet) until I pushed down on the board. Pressing down on the back of the board I heard a faint click. Afterwards (so far) everything appears normal.

Since they sold out you really expected them to have stock to send a replacement... yeah sure. If shipping was an issue with you why didn't you check out the details before you purchased?.. admittedly you state it was a grey area (at best). 28 days... we were warned well in advance how 1SaleADay operates... I simply see it as whining about a deal you already agreed to... that's where we disagree.

So far so good. This thing is massive compared to my Denon 4311.

Going to run Trinnov later and try it a bit.

This receiver has suddenly caught my attention. Actually, it is the price of $599 brand new with a three year warranty, that has caught my attention. I also have a five channel 150x5 Marantz amp I can use with it if necessary. I read a couple reviews, and I know it initially had some bugs upon it's release. I am also considering a refurb Marantz AV 7005 processor for $300 more. However, the Marantz processor would only come with a one year warranty. I would appreciate any input . THANKS !!

I'm crossing my fingers my unit arrives all pretty and works.

Charles I am really baffled by your posts. Looking back in this forum I see that you received your second 972 from ACC4 on November 30th. At that time you indicated that everything was working except the remote. Then you quote my fix as "I had the same issue........" Do you have two 972's?? I take offense to your calling me a whiner. If you knew the solution to my problem, "the board seating fix" why didn't you just say so and save me a lot of grief, emails, etc. I enjoy the contributions you make to AVS not really sure where you are coming from on the 972 forum, are you trying to be helpful or passing yourself off as the "expert".

I am glad I was able to fix mine and I immediately shared this information for other purchasers waiting for there units to arrive. Had you told me about "your fix" we would not be having this discourse.

Enjoy your 972.

Remember to use proper lifting, don't want to hurt your back, but if you did, maybe a few sick days at home would be beneficial with your new toy!

Be sure to share your setup adventures as their is much to learn about this receiver.
