OTOH, the bigger issues are the quirks with the receiver's performance -codec delays, sub thumps, occasional loud pops with certain surround codecs, etc. Is there anywhere that has a list of 'known issues' with R-972s with the most recent firmware upgrade, and which ones can be avoided by not using the stock remote? That might be a useful tool for anyone debating whether to take a chance and use it to experience Trinnov at less high-end consumer-level prices.
Other than the use of the remote, I don't think any of the quirks you listed can be avoided with the use of a different remote.
Of the issues you listed above, I only experience the codec delays. It only happens if there is a break in the codec, such as "blank" space between a show and a commercial. The major networks don't have this, but other channels do, and also when these cable/satellite operators splice in commercials.
You get the worst of everything in this thread, and that is good, but also remember that not everyone experiences all the quirks issues. I'd say that if everything has you this hesitant, and the cost of trying is too high, then just let it go.
