Not knocking the Edge at all since I think it's a killer bargain these days for the prices I've seen it go for but I really think you're going to be happy and impressed with the Duo and I personally would doubt that any Edge owner who decided to sell or work out an upgrade deal/swap for a Duo would regret doing so.

We've seen at least two people in this thread that were happy and thought the Duo was worth the upgrade from the Edge for them as best I gather. (Aaron and Joe)

I'm betting you'll be the third person.

I don't think the Edge is bad for its price but I do need a VP that is more stable and Im hoping the DUO is the one.

The good news so far is: Any "instability" that I've had so far was my fault for not having certain settings the way they should be.

I'd say I put the Duo through about 4 hours of good use yesterday through several different scenarios and, excepting me setting it properly, it hasn't missed a beat and I'm already getting spoiled by it.


I'm happy at how quiet and cool it runs as well. It's well ventilated and every so often during the 4 hours of use and at the end when I was finished for the night, I touched it in several spots and it was barely even warm to the touch. You can't do much better than that IMHO.

Indeed, both are cheaper than everything except possibly the VP20, which was somewhere around the Duo's price.

I have mostly HDMI cables hooked up, and get no audio. Picture no problem, but no audio. ANY THOUGHTS? Also how does one get the set up wizzard to come on? It initially did when i first powered on the unit, however after turning off, and even unpluging DUO, i cant get WIZZARD menu to come back up, nor can i find it in the menu system. (the edge has a wizzard icon, on the menu screen, the DUO does not)

ANY help would be appreciated.

Read the manual?

Check all of your connections and make sure you know where things are at and that they are the way you want them to be. Ideally, you want to connect your sources directly to the Duo via HDMI. From there, you want to connect another HDMI from AV Monitor 1 out to your primary display and AV Monitor 2 out to a secondary display if applicable.

You then want to use another HDMI cable from HDMI audio out to an HDMI input on your receiver.

Since you said "mostly HDMI" in you case, I leave it to you to intuit what you'd have to do although the wizards really will cover any configuration you've got.

Take it carefully, one step at a time.


Hit Menu -> Configuration -> Wizard Launch

Run both Wizards, one after the other.

Hello all..

Waiting for my new toy to come in, but, had a question for you guys..

I have the edge at the moment, and have found a serious issue with audio, and am wondering if Duo is better.

Problem:

On Edge, when passing HD audio (DTS HD MA/ DD TRue HD), the audio will work some times to my Anthem D2v, and some times no audio.. In that case I have to unplug/replug the edge to get audio..

Anyway, the MAJOR issue found was:

After you get the audio to pass via bitstream to the Anthem, the anthem will state it's getting DTS HD MA, or DD true HD.. However..

The sound is lower in level, and much less dynamic than if the source was going direct to anthem and bypassing the edge..

Now, I'm scared that the duo will have this same issue..

Note sure as to why this sound difference as bits are bits..

My workaround is to input all sources to anthem, the out of anthem to edge to display.. ( i use edge for the detail enhancements,, very nice)..

but..

Get audio/video sync issue...


Anyway, hope someone can confirm that duo does not alter the audio in anyway, and that someone has compared direct to stereo, vs, going thru Duo for audio.. and if using the video out #2 will be better for audio than the just audio only jack..

With the D2v, not sure what you need the Edge/Duo for.

but, on the plus side,, the Duo does a better job when using the detail enhancements..

The main reason for going to use it.. Also like all the advanced stuff you can do on the duo..

Going by what I have been told by the guys over here who deal with Dvdo products they find the Duo a dream compared to the edge.

Just curious as to why, since both units use same chip and almost same firmware (from what I have read on the net)?

You would think they would both have same issues/bugs..

Apparently it handles better than the Edge, I have not got one yet but hopefully in the next few days and can let you know.

I'm being offered a nice price for my VP50 and am thinking about upgrading to the Duo. I assume the Duo will outperform the VP50 in every area. Is there any disadvantage to making this switch?

Still been very happy with the Duo here. No issues. No complaints. Very glad I have one and already very spoiled by it.

Hookup the beast, and works great!!

The audio issue with the edge is now gone thus far with the duo..

Now to test more..

joerod's posts seem to have been cleaned up a lot here on avs.

when i read the review, i noticed it lived on his (then public) page over on **************.com which seems to be non-google-able at this time. for all i know it has been decided (perhaps by joerod perhaps by an avs moderator) that there shouldn't be so many links to that site anymore.

the site boasts that it is relatively unmoderated ("where you can speak your mind without being constantly monitored.") and in my mind this makes the whole venture of questionable value.

not to annoy joerod, but the review wasn't *so* insightful that i would spend too long looking for it - he seemed to be saying the duo was like the edge only better.

I would agree with this. I tried posting the link this morning and when I saw that the URL was all ****'d up, I just deleted my post.

Honestly this does make perfect sense if you think about it. AVS Forum and the other forum are direct competitors. What are they competing for you ask? Advertising of course. The more hits ("eyes") that you have on your site, the more you can charge a company to advertise on your site. AVS does not get an "assist" when their members are redirected to a competitor, so really there is no reason that they should have allowed it in the first place.

This would be my observation with how I use my DUO. But I'm also not using all it has to offer either.

Congrats you got it before I did , how did you find it compared to the edge? Eg quicker more stable etc How have you hooked it up?

Whatever was happening with Joerod has apparently been resolved so he should be back in here before long to help answer questions and such.

i had an edge (i was a beta tester)... i really liked it, but once i got the bdp-83, it became a bit redundant, as i wasn't using any of the picture controls towards the end...

just was wondering if there was any "goodies" in it that weren't in the edge...

Tonight I will. I'm glad to see the Edge going.

I never had any stability issues with my EDGEs. They were pretty much rock solid with the two dozen HDMI devices I used with them.
I haven't used the DUO with all my HDMI devices, but I'm not going to be moving it around like I did with my two EDGEs. But the ones I have used it with have been fine. And I dumped all my analog devices a while ago.
I still need to sell my VP50pro that I haven't used since I got my first EDGE last year, and then I still need to sell my EDGEs. i really need to quit procrastinating.

I'm the opposite I'm not having any luck with the edge,I'm just hoping the Duo will do the job
