Analysis Paralysis: ~12" square sub, ~$500

Very close to making a decision on this, just need a light push in the right direction.

1. Your budget. $500, could stretch to $650 if appropriate.

2. Size requirements/limits. Looking for something on the fairly compact side, 12" square would be ideal, could go up to 15" square if necessary.

3. Room dimensions. Main Room is 18x20 with 12' ceiling. The right wall is 9' windows, and there is no left wall, extending out into dining area.

4. Primary uses. Pretty even really. Probably 40% Music, 35% TV/Film, 25% Gaming.

5. Listening habits. This is an apartment, so no crazy SPL needed or even desired. This is primarily to fill in the wholly absent low frequencies from 20ish-100Hz from the Magnepan MMGW fronts. It's pretty funny to play Rock Band drums on the MMGWs, all you hear on the bass drum hits is the smack on the rubber pad...

6. Appearance requirements. Would prefer something that's nicely finished; an plain-jane or downright ugly box will need to be hidden and will limit placement options.

7. Timeframe. Ready to pull the trigger now but can wait a reasonable amount of time to receive unit if it's the right one.

8. Search the forum. Four straight days of thread-reading in the can....

In short, looking for a good-looking, relatively compact sub that doesn't need to be cranked up to sound great.

My short list would probably look like this:
1. Aperion Bravus 8D. This pretty much hits all the marks. I've seen other suggestion threads veer away from this due to early frequency rolloff but again given the needs I think this may be a non-issue. That also seems somewhat unavoidable for compact subs. Opinions also seem mixed on the digital-interface EQ (vs. good ol' knobs) but it seems like quite a nice addition at the price point.

2. Martin Logan Dynamo(new)/Abyss(used).

3. Sunfire HRS-8 or -10 used

4. REL Q-150E used

5. SVS SB12-Plus (budget stretcher)

6. Epik Vanquish. Seems like a top performer but worried about the look of it.

Many thanks

The Dynamo will do a great job of integrating with your Maggies. Forward and downward firing options add flexibility. Ideal for an apartment - I've used one in mine, primarily for music in a 2-channel setup. Superb sub that can be had well within your budget.

Something else to consider is the Elemental Designs A5s-200. It's a relatively inexpensive sealed 12" sub. I would also mention the Hsu VTF1, which is on sale right now. It is a little bit larger than your size requirements, but the non-sale version comes in some very nice wood finishes so you wont have to hide it at least.

The Dynamo does look great; very positive reviews on audioreview dot com. Seems to be described often as a very "musical" sub. That term seems to rile up some but I'm presuming it is very accurate in the upper bass area, which is important for Maggies - no output below 100Hz and 100-150 isn't very impactful either, just part of the deal with small planars.

I took a look at the ED lineup; seems like extremely good value/dollar but the finish is really tough to get past. Obviously this is entirely subjective but of all the brands I've considered, they're at the bottom in appearance and finish. It's not so much WAF in effect - she's great and willing to live with/incorporate whatever I want. But that pebble finish... ugh.

I do have an eye on the VTF1, the veneers look great. Fairly large but might be able to deal with that. Is downfiring more of an issue for apartments? Floor is parquet hardwood atop concrete subfloor in a highrise.

In terms of sound penetration/potential neighbor annoyance, is a deeper-reaching sub necessarily worse from a real world standpoint?
