Another bad episode. Just kill it with fire and we'll all agree to forget this lame experiment of a season ever happened.
You could tell that there were still some writers left over from the old days in the writing room for this episode, though. Even though the over-arching theme of the episode was a complete meltdown (bringing back those German guys minus Nick Kroll???), there were tiny slivers of humor here and there peppering the script. The best ones were the ones that were clearly subtle and not hammy for the camera.

I appreciated the Strongbad reference when the Germans were beatboxing techno, and I especially appreciated that the script didn't try to explain or reference it... if this were Big Bang Theory, you could almost guarantee one of the characters would say "Hey, Strongbad reference!" followed by canned audience laughter.

Other than that, there wasn't much to like in this episode. Maybe Britta and Annie in those German wench outfits, but not much else.
Why bring back the Germans without Nick? He's what made them funny.
IMHO - it was about as good as a lot of the episodes last year - great no ... but still better than a lot of shows on TV. I'm glad it's still on so y'all have something to kvetch about every week.... wink.gif
post #1625 of 1728
They're all there, they quip, situations are surreal, but each week proves that the magic is gone. The last seasons of Monty Python weren't any good either.

NBC is in worse shape now than they were in the late seventies/early eighties when Fred Silverman was trying to turn the ship around. A sad fate for the network that brought us color television.

Yep, it's incredibly hollow. Anyone that thinks its in any way comparable to last season is blind. This is one of the rare shows where the showrunner is vital to the success of the show and Sony destroyed the show when they fired him. I doubt they care. They'll get the show into syndication and fans will get one extra year of the show. Albeit a really mediocre, crappy final year.

Because it was terrible.

Well I'm glad that they at least make an effort to show a classroom every once in a while, since this show revolves around a college.

That being said, I don't think there is much that can be done to save this season. There are still some old glimpses of humor, but so much of the storyline (like the Germans) is just recycled.

I share this sentiment. I thought it was a good to not great episode. I liked the Changnesia running joke. I like the flashback to the previous episodes and how they were being *******s to everyone else. I still think this show makes a lot of comments about the show's direction through the plots.

Regarding the Changnesia, it is readily apparent that the Chang character is going to go one of two ways this season: Most likely, he is definitely faking it and if so it is a waste of everyone's time. Less likely, he really does have amnesia, he will go the rest of the season being "good", then suddenly his true nature will come back to him and there will be a personality conflict. Also a waste of everyone's time.

Maybe they should explain it since I have no clue who or what Strongbad is.

Without Kroll I had trouble remembering who they were. Kroll was the only memorable actor in that trio.

The Thanksgiving episode was just awful. It's a shame to see the show go out this way, a shadow of its former self. Not sure if I will continue to watch the rest of the season choosing instead not to tarnish the memory of a once great comedy.

A glimmer of hope in an otherwise dull season.

I chuckled a few times, and generally enjoyed it. However, it does seem that something ineffable is missing. The writers are trying to hit the same marks, but the spirit is gone. The actors are also doing their best, but they seem awkward, too.

Will CC appear in all of this season's episodes, or did he quit after they finished shooting?

I think he was fired/quit with about three episodes left in the season.

With a 13 episode shortened season, I can't help but wonder if they are going to be hamstrung by the frequent holiday episodes. We've already seen Halloween and Thanksgiving, and reports are that there is a Christmas and Valentines episode, too.

I don't know 'bout that, but Annie is not missing, and is certainly effable ...

Abed pondered the next Xmas episode at the end of the Thanksgiving one, so I'm sure we can look forward to at least one more holiday.

There is one change this season I cannot believe I'm the only person to notice.

The dialog audio sounds terrible. It sounds like it was all added in a cheap ADR booth and recorded at 128 bit MP3. Did Sony reduce the budget so much they can't even afford an audio engineer now?
Ok. I'll say it. Last night's episode was great. And I say this with every fiber of my being wanting to experience the schadenfreude of a complete train wreck of Season 4. To me, last night's episode was the best of the new batch so far, and seemed to hit all the right notes. In my opinion, what made Community what it was wasn't that it was "funny", but that it was "clever", and last night's episode hit that mark. There were tons of great throw-away lines that were just as good as anything from the previous seasons, and plenty of movie references for film and documentary buffs. Loved the "Rent Memento" markings on Chang, the MacGuffin Institute, the "Capturing the Friedmans" reference, and the wink to Werner Herzog and "Grizzly Man".

Yes, Harmon is gone, and his influence is certainly missing, but the new team has been pretty good, and if I didn't know that Harmon was gone, i'm not sure I would have been able to notice.

Pretty good episode. For all my complaining, at least it's miles more watchable than the Office. ..
The only disappointing thing for me about this episode was the prominence of Chang. Chang as a character just doesn't work for me.

And boom, called it. Chang's faking. As if that was some kind of secret.

Chase left, from what I have read. with 2 episodes left to finish - neither of which were the season finale. So I would expect his name in the credits until the end of S4.

Thanks for posting that. Yes, the Changnesia episode was arguable the best of the current season. And even subpar COMMUNITY is still a better waste of 30 minutes that anything else in the show's timeslot. So a giant GO F*** YOURSELVES..... REPEATEDLY to the haters.

Just kidding...love you guys.biggrin.gif

Yea, I watched it live the other night, then had thoughts of trying to be the first to post about the episode, with something along the lines of, "C'mon, you gotta admit... this one was GOOD!"

But I forgot. tongue.gif

Quoting your post only to get Ms Brie's pic on the page twice. Yum.

Episode wasn't terrible, but it also wasn't remotely good either. This season is so damn disconnected from everything that happened prior. The first 3 years felt like they were building to something, but this season so far feels like a bunch of people made a bunch of Community-inspired stories and filmed them...poorly. I get no sense that they're heading anywhere.

Apart from "rent memento" and Macguffin, which was at least some pop-culture throwaway stuff, this episode felt as flat as the rest to me. Garrett with a steadicam was amusing, but the more of this season I watch the more it feels like a directive went out that said "make it more like 30 Rock" to fit in with the NBC template.
There's definitely still something a bit 'off' about the episodes, even when they're good - like this last one, I thought it was great. Loved how Annie manipulated Troy's contrarianism to force the guy to admit he knew Chang. "So I guess you're not hiding anything..." "TELL US WHAT YOU'RE HIDING!!"
Finallly one that can compete with previous seasons. It sort of dropped the ball at the very end when it got all uplifting, but it beats the rest of season 4.
