Newbie question.. some recommendations

Hi everyone... Although I know a lot about computers and recording, I know next to nothing about new TV technologies, as I haven't had a TV for quite some time, BUT...

I recently acquired a Sony Bravia 40" in trade for some work I did... all it has for an input is an HDMI. Here's my scenario, I'm not sure where to begin...

I have a pretty powerful computer, on a newtwork. Also on the network is a 1 TB drive. This drive has all my mp3's, as well as a bunch of avi's and movies ripped from dvd's (IFO, VOB, etc). Downstairs, I'll have the television. Currently, I would imagine I'd run the audio into my stereo, but eventually could see getting a surround sound setup and possibly a Bluray.

Soooo, here's my question. Short of moving the computer to the tv (which I really don't want to do at this point), is there a way I could access files on the network storage drive, and listen to or watch them without turning on the computer? I suspect that that's what this particular section of the forum is about, but I could use a bit of guidance here? I'm not sure where to begin. I guess the device would need to HDMI to the TV, as well as send out some audio to the stereo (and eventually the surround sound). Thanks in advance.

Assuming your 1TB drive is a NAS (network attached storage) and not just plugged into the computer, then yes. Any one of the network-capable devices listed here will do what you're asking. Most (but not all) will play DVD rips as ISOs, but not many will read DVD folders like you have. Popcorn Hour and Egreat will do it for sure, but it is very picky about folder structure.
