Fiddlin' With The Bassis

I got a new toy to play with! Here's why--I used to have only Rythmik subs in my room, with their built-in LT circuit, which gave me(with room gain) an almost perfect flat response to 10 Hz. Loved it. I moved those subs to the back of my room to fix a problem in my second row. I built a couple sealed subs for up front(LMS and Mael-X). However, I lost that perfect flat response to 10 Hz as the two subs I built started to roll off at 50Hz and 33Hz respectively.

This would be a representative graph

Not bad, but not flat into the nether regions like I had before. So, the Bassis seemed like the simplest way to fix this up.

Here is the LMS close-mic with no EQ, and 4, 8, and 12 db of boost, Fs of 42Hz(box is -3 db at 50 or so, Qtc of .569)

It got even better if I moved the Fs up to 55 Hz and used 12 db of boost, which is where I left it.

It is such an addicting device--you can just keep fiddling with the knobs till you get what you want, although it could be quite dangerous to your drivers I could go to 60Hz Fs and 16db of boost and get almost flat close mic, but I think that would be a bit much

On to the dual Maelstrom-X box--here is 0, 6, and 12db of boost, with Fs of 30

I settled on 8 db of boost, and Fs of 30. Any other Fs was not helpful at all.

Both of the subs are powered by CE4000's, bridged 220V for the LMS, and stereo 110V for the Maelstrom.

So, I settled on the above settings, and got my connections all hooked up and reran the SVS AS-EQ1. Bosso loves those precise graphs, so I have to show it!

...and then a REW graph at the main listening position

Success!

Graphs are good, and better yet, the sound is phenomenal.

Funny you post this as I had bought my Bassis as a kit, found someone to solder it and will be getting it back today. Now to learn how to implement it

Fat,

Looks great. Thanks for the update.

Yeah, that SVS EQ 'after' graph gets me every time. Give me a shotgun.

Questions:

1) You said the graph is with 0, 6 and 12dB, but it looks like 0, 4 and 8dB of boost?

2) You said the Fs is set to 30Hz, but where do you have the Qs and Qb set to?

Thanks,

Bosso

Hmmmm.......I wrote it down as 0-6-12, even named the picture that way, but I could be mistaken. The Qs of that box was .619, and I set Qb for both at .7.

What would differing Qb do for me? I meant to mess with it later when I have a chance.

That's exactly what it looks like; anechoic .6 to Bassis affected .7. The Bassis is ridiculously accurate in my experiences using several of them with dozens of subs.

I think you're fine with that, looking at the final FR. I don't know that it gets much better than that.

I was just curious.

Very nice results, my friend. I bet it indeed does sound phenomenal.

Oh man, you got one! I am so jealous

When I get more free time I will probably just break down and buy a new one. Got no bites at all to my wanted ads.

How easy was the learning curve?

Congats on your new toy!
