Focused Discussion of Pioneer VSX 1019 AH-K Vs. Onkyo TX-SR607

Thread Starter
I Know this is kind of a played out topic, but I really want to ask a particular question with prices in mind.

My main concern is the quality of the audio itself. Video upconversion is cool, but it seems like you won't get too much from a midrange receiver in that field (but I wouldn't mind hearing your thoughts on that as well)

So here's the situation, I placed an order for the pioneer and am currently waiting on the backorder to be filled. I am locked in at the price of 425, which is lower than it seems to be going for these days.

But now, I have found the Onkyo for 400.

Should I cancel my pioneer and go with the Onkyo. I'd love to hear from owners and experts who know the performance of these receivers and what differentiates them.

As I said, sound quality is number one. I adore music, but also play a decent amount of games, and watch a decent amount of movies/television/anime. Quality is more important to me than power.

Please let me know your input. thanks!

I also have been trying to decide between these two receivers. Did you purchase one or the other and how is it working for you so far? Thanks.

These are two I am looking at also. Trying to compare these (or upping to the Onkyo 707), Denon 1910, or Yamaha (RX-V665, 765, or 1065)

I am looking to hook up to a set of Infinity Speakers (all I know right now is that they are 100W, not more info at this time, they are about 7 years old).

TV is Hitachi 42HDS52 (1080i)

I will be connecting Fios HD-DVR - HDMI

Sony Blu-ray BDP-N460 when purchased (at the same time as receiver). - HDMI

Wii - Component (will want to upconvert this)

Canon HD Camcorder at times through HDMI.

I want a decent iPod connection for my iPod Touch and wifes 80GB Classic.

I keep going back and forth between all of the receivers I had mentioned. As of last weekend I was set to go with the Onkyo 607. I currently have the Onkyo TX-SR700, and have been happy with it (just need something with the HDMI connection.

Thanks for anyone's input on this in advance.

Well, I had a Pioneer 1019, and I took it back and got a 607. I don't have a iPod/iPhone but the price of the 607 plus it's dedicated dock = Pio 1019. Not sure which one does the iPod thing better.

I personally think:
Sound quality is better on the Onkyo 607. Be sure to use the calibration routines on both before you decide.
The 607 has more power (even though the 1019 is rated higher). Try it with 6 good-sized speakers and you will see what I mean.
I seem to remember that the 607 has more HDMI ports.
With the full metal front, the 607 looks better.
They both run hot when driven hard.
The graphical interface is better on the 1019 (but how often do you use that?) The one on the 607 is perfectly usable (but almost DOS looking).
The 607 has DynamicVolume (leveling).
I don't let the receiver up-scale video. I just pass-through and let the player or TV to it instead.
The 1019 has a USB port which is very cool. If you have no other way to play MP3's this is a big plus.
I think the 1019 would also send analog video to Zone2 ... interesting.

The 707 is in a different class. If your budget allows and you need the additional features and power, get that instead.

I too am looking at these receivers for Christmas but have one question that is pretty important to my purchase.

Can either (or both) of these receivers take HDMI input and output that through the component video output? My TV does not have HDMI in but my HTPC and PS3 both have HDMI out. This is a necessary feature for me right now because I would like to use the receiver for all of my video and audio switching.

Please let me know so I can better make a decision on these two receivers since most of the features are closely comparable and price is close as well this may be (unfortunately) a deciding factor for me.

To rothgar

Yes it will....

Page 26 of the manuel shows how to hook up a non-hdmi tv and allow for hdmi inputs.

that would be incorrect...

to repeat myself (since obviously the first time i posted it directly before your post it didn't get through ) there are no avr's (that i am aware of) that will take hdmi in and output component...

I have an Onkyo Ht-RC160, which is basically a 607 without the front hdmi input and 10 watts less power. Just hooked it up a few days ago and its sound is beautiful. It will not output any hdmi input to analog (including component) output. It will output analog via hdmi. It puts out a beautiful sound field. I have not done an a/b comparison to a 1019. To further tweak you pricing; the 160 is available for low to mid 300's. I can also fry an egg on top of it from it's heat!

Yes, with 6 large bookshelf speakers, they both run hot. I would recommend an Antec Veris Component Cooler for either. I got one for my 607 and a LCG-5 SmartStrip to automatically turn in on/off. See the 607 thread for more details.

I've never tried it, but I don't think the 607 will take HDMI-in and convert to Component out. For the 1019, see page 22 in the pdf manual.

I read many reasons why this feature is not available... like it would require down-sampling (1080p->720p/1080i) or because HDMI is digital and 3-cable Component is analog. However, I'm pretty sure it boils down to the fact that this feature could be used to circumvent HDCP.

If you let me know what kind of TV you have I could recommend an optimal wiring for the setup.
