Okay, still digesting (too much) prime rib Christmas dinner. Just turned off outdoor Christmas lights, unplugged the lights on the Christmas tree, and damped the fire in the fireplace. Wife's snuggled up in bed under the new down comforter.

Have some time to talk audio before I join her

Some opinions from my experience -

Back surrounds do the most good when there's enough space between MLP and back wall. There's close to 18ft. distance between the back surrounds and the side surrounds in my room, so the back surrounds are very useful in helping achieve the full ambience that is present in many soundtracks.

I'm using front height speakers in my 9.2 system (Integra DTR-80.1 AVR) because my room layout won't allow for an anywhere close to correct front wide speaker placement. I wish it would, but there's no chance. Still, I'm totally satisfied with the way it sounds using mostly Audyssey DSX and sometimes Dolby PLIIz depending on what sounds best to me on various source material. Setting the Soundstage level (when using Audyssey DSX) +1dB from its OdB Reference setting tends to bring out the front height channels a little more on some soundtracks, as does setting the distance 1ft. closer (on these speakers) to slightly increase the delay. These last two are room sensitive tweaks that may or may not improve your listening experience and are worth experimenting with - but be sure to record Audyssey's measurements so you could easily return to them if necessary.

I always use Audyssey Dynamic EQ no matter what, and adjust the Reference Level Offset to suit the program material. I utilize Audyssey Dynamic volume at its Light setting when I'm watching movies at less than -12dB on the master volume scale, but never for music.

Just some observations that might help.

I hope everyone had a very merry Christmas

Cheers,
SB

+1. I know Audyssey says otherwise, but when properly balanced, rear surrounds help give you that sound of a large theatrical space. Even running dipoles on the side to simulate the effect of theatrical speaker arrays, the rear surrounds do a great job of bringing it all together. I'm running 9.1 and if I had to give up a pair of speakers, the heights would go before the rears. Fortunately, I don't have to give up my heights, 'cause I love how they sound.

Has anyone noticed that they get a low level rumble or hum out of their subwoofer 1? when I select subwoofer 2 ch the sound goes away even though I only have one sub hooked up? This is the 3rd major problem I have found with this receiver...im about to sell it and go with another brand. I love the sound field and seperation I get from it but these problems with a $1500 receiver should not exist.

No issue with that on mine. Sure you don't have a ground loop?

None here either.

No ground loop. If I hook up a different receiver to the same outlet and speakers..clear as a bell...Another member told me that it might be the Hdmi board that is contributing to the noise that im hearing..just contact Onkyo for a repair, unfortunately they are closed for the holidays will have to wait till monday. Like I said I really hate to get rid of it because I love the way it sounds but when I hook up my $300 receiver to $4000 worth of speakers and I get NO hum or hiss...It makes me wonder why my Onkyo receiver produces all of these odd noises.

I'll be putting my 1007 up for sale in a month or so for a very reasonable price. It's been great, but the upgrade bug has bitten me! PM me if you are interested.

I have this issue as well. I've tried to change both the gain setting and the sub level in the speaker calibration of the receiver. Neither seemed to help. This is incredibly aggravating when watching movies.

Oddly enough, it does not appear to be an issue when watching TV. It only happens while watching movies during passages with bass signal. Ie, the rumble is not constant throughout any given movie.

I'm going to try using my BD player with a toslink connection instead of hdmi tomorrow. I will also try using my DVD player with the same movie to see if different sources cause the rumbling. If I find anything I will post. Good luck.

I tried it anyway just to see. I Re-ran Audyssey, but did not update the FW and started checking sources. To my surprise it seemed to work as the staticy/popping went away. Unfortunately it was short lived as the static returned to the front right speaker the next morning. The rep had said that if the reset didn't work that it would need to go to a service center, so off it goes next week.

My story has a happy ending Got it back about 2 weeks ago and have had plenty of time to do some testing by watching TV, playing video games and watching movies and it has passed with flying colors. The repair shop said the problem was an "intermittent relay" which they replaced. The only thing I haven't done is update the firmware which I haven't decided if I'm going to do since everything works. So for me it is back to being a happy camper again.

How long was your turnaround time?

I am impressed by a shop who can take an electronic product and a few owner comments, then suss out a particular component out of hundreds and replace it. Even in this day, it seems unlikely.

Thanks for those of you who commented about heights vs. wides. I am going with heights as well, just about to cut drywall in a minute. If I get bored with that choice, I'll buy another pair of speakers and add it to the mix. Then I can switch between wides and heights at my leisure. My living room should be the one with all of these extra channels, but the bedroom theater wins.

The backs are only about 15 inches behind the listener positions, behind the bed's headboard. I'd prefer further back, but it seems rare to have that kind of a room arrangement.

My side surrounds are Axiom's QS8 quadpolar models. Wiring is behind the wall plate, but I'm wishing I installed the plates and speakers higher now. They're only about 2 feet higher, or less, than our listening position. Front heights will go just below the ceiling, backs will go maybe 3-4 feet above listener position.

Go into the Setup Menu.
Choose 2. Speaker Setup - then choose 5. Equalizer Settings.
You can then turn Audyssey off for a flat equalizer setting.

Cheers,
SB

I just picked up the last 1007 from Crutchfield.ca at a pretty good deal. Should be arriving by the end of the week.

Any tips on good movies to test out Audesey/PLiiz once I have it updated and set up?

And should I be concerned about power consumption, everything totaled I'm over 18 amps on a 15 amp circuit. I assume the 11.6 amp draw is a maximum draw from the unit? My Yammy is rated at 10 amps and that would put me at 17 amps total and I have never had a problem.

My usual listening levels are on the low side.
Adam,

I'm going to guess you'll be okay at lower listening volumes. The value would be max current draw. Otherwise, of what use would it be?

Regarding discs of interest, here are a couple paragraphs from an article on Audyssey linked in a much earlier post:

"At the beginning of Ratatouille, the camera moves slowly between some trees while rain falls. The 5.1 on the disc surrounds you with rain. ProLogic IIz envelops you with rain. Rain seemingly filled the room. The effect was more natural, less "created." And this is what IIz is really all about.

I brought my own demo Blu-ray, not convinced they wouldn't just show me material they knew worked. The Brécourt assault scene in the second episode of Band of Brothers has the main characters taking an artillery position. In many ways, this was a bad way to show off IIz. Gunshots, shouting and more are all localized sounds, and not what you'd want to find in the height speakers.

Then the artillery guns fired, and the boom filled the room. Not in volume alone, like a big subwoofer, but as the guns fired, the natural reverberation in the soundtrack came from all around. More than with 5.1 and 7.1 alone, but more like what you'd expect if you were 70 yards from four 105s."

going to send back my Tx-Nr1007 getting a lot of clicking sounds and it`s getting worse
post #2329 of 2564
I will be selling my 1007 when the prices on the 3008 come down. Who ever purchases my 1007 will be getting an almost new unit because I never, EVER use it's onboard amp.

The clicking noise is indeed very annoying. Can this issue be solved thu a FW update?
I'm having second thoughts on the 1007, so I'm picking up a denon 4311 as well. I'm guessing the 1007 will get shipped straight back to crutchfield.

The relays you mean?

Perhaps you should check out the 4311 thread before making any hasty moves. They seem to be having troubles of their own!

I'm not slamming Denon. Botyh Onkyo and Denon offer good products, but both have been known to have a few glitches, along with some characteristics that annoy some buyers. I don't have a dog in this fight, just thought I'd add my opinion.

That's why I originally got scared away from the denon. I will have both to try out and the loser will be returned.

Can you describe the circumstances, I'm still a bit vague on this. When does it occur? How loud is it? How often does it occur?

I'm not sure if gbal4 is having the same case as mine. As in my situation, each time I fast forward or skip a movie, change video input sources, etc there is this "annoying" clicking sound. I'm still using an old firmware.

It's quite loud. I'm sitting about 12-14 feets away & I can hear clearly the "clicking".

Changing video input sources wouldn't bother me, and it would almost even make sense, like a train switching tracks. But fast forward / skip? Sheesh.

AC4L very recently dropped their 1007 price another $20. I bought mine around 10 days ago for the higher price. They're closing in on $600.

Mine does the same thing. Does a firmware update fix this?

Hi everyone, looking into the purchase of a 1007 and have some video hookup questions I'd like to have answered before I jump in. I have a 1080i capable CRT RPTV that only has component inputs. I want to hook up a PS3 and Directv HD box to the receiver via HDMI, then output to the display via component.

Will this receiver allow HDMI inputs to be output over component or will HDCP not allow it?
If it does can the receiver upscale lower resolution video like standard DVDs from the PS3 or SD broadcasts from the DTV box to 1080i and at the same time "down-scale" 1080p to 1080i?

I've looked at the owners manual online, I have a feeling what I want to happen won't, but I hope to can get a positive answer.
