Sony DVP-NS710 OR Pioneer DV-220/420V-K?

[I realize Sony 700H vs Pio 410 was addressed in a march thread but I don't know if there have been material changes to the players]

I'm primarily interested in the upconversion quality. I have a ton of SD-DVDs. Audio CDs are also a concern.

Alternate file formats and USB connectivity don't interest me, nor does the remote since I'll use a Harmony. My research suggests the Pio might be a superior player but I'm put off by all the talk of firmware requirements.

Is it wrong of me to think that a 2009 DVD player ought to just work?

Thanks

I have the Pioneer and for DVD and Audio CD it has no problem and it is a good device.

All the talk about the firmware is because we needed more out of a DivX USB MP3 player like having Shuffle for MP3 playback (Audio CD repeat and shuffle already is in the player original firmware) and also bigger subtitles for DivX files. DVD subtitles are not text based so again original firmware has no problem in that area.

All the buzz you see is because we all need universal players not a DVD/AUDIO CD players anymore so if your needs are basic, you have no problem with Pioneer

A player like Oppo BDP-83 but with the price of DV-420 would be nice!

I don't have the Pio but I'm very disappointed in the newer Sony DVD players. I loved the older ones but the newer ones (last year and this years is worse) seem really cheap and lack many of the nice features of the past.
People wanted a cheap $69 DVD player and Sony gave em' that
Unfortunately AFAIK Sony doesn't make a decent one for people willing to spend more I think Sony thinks the whole world revolves around BR
