Insignia NS-BRDVD3 - Netflix & BD-Live - Want Your Opinions - Page 13

Gizmo,
No luck with any of my portable HD's. But I don't have one with separate power.
Has anybody found a way to fix the subs for h264 files?
I was pretty excited about this player when I thought I no longer had to remix them to Xvid, or that I wouldn't have to buy a Western Digital Media Player.
But all anime files in h264 have a good picture, but no subs, which renders it worthless for my Japanese anime. Plays the converted avi, xvid files perfectly off the thumb drives.
Still would like to know what audio dacs it is using. Watched Tom Petty dvd
concert with Stevie Nicks and the sound was fabulous.

How's the DVD upconversion?
Is it comparable to the Panasonic models?

Ok, I forgot to preface my previous statement of "any questions and I'll do my best" with "I have a life." I haven't spent the past several years comparing every brands upconversion or disk tray opening with a stop watch. If you are looking for most bang for your buck, this is it. If you want the top of the line player nanosecond tray speed, obviously Insignia isn't it.
The Insignia has a pretty fast boot time, and the tray does open quickly after you hit the power button, about 1-2 secs sounds about right. To my surprise it is has very good up-conversion on dvd movies, it does just as good a job as my Toshiba a2 maybe even slightly better.

The only gripe is the picture seemed a bit more vibrant when connecting my PS3 to my projector versus this guy. The projector is a Mitsubishi HD1000 which is 720p/1080i, but for whatever reason it receives 1080p from the PS3 and would not from the Insignia. This is not that big of a deal though because the player is for my girlfriends living room and her LCD is 1080p.

I only played around with it for about an hour, and I didn't connect it to my receiver because it's a old POS and didn't feel like hassling with it, but if anyone has any questions I'll do my best to give you an answer.

After looking at the pics of this player on BB, the USB port is in the rear....how useless is that????
So if i want to add a usb stick i have to slide the player forward??

Yeah, I believe the non wifi player has a front USB port. Not sure why they didn't stick with that but it didn't bother me much.

Get the wired network version....USB port is on the front. Or get a USB extension cable (used to come with old USB flash drives) and run it around to the front.

I'd take wi-fi over a front USB port anyday.

Isn't there alot of reports of usb has a weak voltage, so maybe a extension may not work?
I'm most likely buying this tommorow after work, signed back up to Netflix....i dont see anywere about HD streaming movies?, also they charge $2 more for Blu rentals....stinkers!

I did a few quick samples of streaming HD onto my 100" screen and it look real nice. Similar to how broadcast HD looks. The only other time I tried that on my projector was with a service called PlayOn that allows you to stream netflix from your PS3. That, for whatever reason, looked like crap.
Since I have an available ethernet line, the wired version would be the better choice for me especially with the usb on front, right?

Does anybody know if/when it's coming back in stock?

Can you run a 2.5" HD from the usb port?

thanks...

Does anyone have a firmware for the wireless version (NS-WBRDVD) that allows you to play xvid files via the usb? Right now the only way I can get it to work is for me to rename the extension from .avi to .wmv. While this works, it is rather annoying.

On a related note, anyone know how I can check which firmware version my unit has?

Nope...I need it to

I've also noticed a bug with both these players (both wired and wireless) that I can reproduce rather easily. While watching a blu-ray movie, if I chapter skip forward rapidly you will lose the audio out from the hdmi (eg: if on chapter 2 skip to chapter 6 by rapidly pushing the chapter fwd button). It doesn't do this all the time, but it does happen. Once you lose the audio, you can get it back by chapter skipping again (either forward or backwards).

An extension shouldn't be a problem with flash drive, or an AC powered USB drive.

The only good thing about Blockbuster on demand is they don't charge extra for BR

FWIW. I put some MTS files from my Canon HF100 onto a thumb drive, renamed them to .MPG and they played fine. This is nice since I don't have a free port on the bedroom TV. They also played with a file extension of WMV (but not MTS). I am running the second most recent firmware.

How does one rename a fine to .MPG?

So is it true that these players have a more advanced Netlfix interface than some of the other Netflix capable bluray players?

I have only seen the Netlfix interface on my PS3 and the WS version. They are the same, in that I can navigate other tabs at the top, and am not just limited to my Instant Queue.

I hear that with the LG and Samsung players you don't get access to the other tabs, and are limited solely to your instant queue.

Funny that the Best Buy house brand has better Netflix software.

Thanks for the heads up on the movie deal. With $25 off Star Trek that makes this an awesome deal.

From what I could tell it is 100% identical to the PS3's netflix.

I just bought the wbrdvd model. This is the one with Wifi. $129 at BB. It connected with my G network with no problem. Downloaded the firmware update. It works with Netflix. HD is almost like HD OTA TV. I can't believe how easy it set up. And for only $129. I have ATT DSL. It still works pretty good. My router is 2 rooms away from the player.

It's really quite simple. On a Windows machine, right click the file you want to rename and you will be presented with a list of options. Choose "Rename" (without the quotes) and replace MTS with MPG. Both lower and upper case are supported. If you need help with a Mac, perhaps someone else can chime in.
this might be a dumb question, but the unit has a usb 2.0 port on the front and I was wondering if you can play material stored on a thumb drive stick?

Kids these days...can't even be bothered to even attempt at reading a thread.

Just rename the file from
whatever.avi
to
whatever.mpg (or .wmv)

My problem is I have a series of MTS files I shot on vacation and the names of their files are just "00001" - "00038," with no mention of "MTS;" that only shows if I hit properties. So if I were trying to play file "00001" would I just add "MPG" to the end and make it "00001.MPG?"

A new firmware was released today for the wireless model. Does anyone know what it add/fixes? I'd hate to update it only to wish I kept the version I have...

Go to Windows Explorer (windows key + E). go to the tools menu up top. go to folder options. click the view tab. scroll down about halfway and uncheck "hide extensions for known file types." now all those 00001 files should be 00001.mts
post #389 of 1008
I believe MTS files are AVCHD, so renaming won't do it (I think). I just use the software that came with my camera to burn those to a DVD in AVCHD format. The resulting disk plays fine. Otherwise you'll have to re-encode to some other format (and probably lose quality in the process).

EDIT: Nevermind. Apparently you CAN just rename MTS files and play them.

Are you using a Windows machine? The file extension (.MTS) should be visible (I don't know how a Mac handles file names). If you add MPG to the end of 00001 it still won't play because what you'll end up with is 00001.MPG.MTS. You need to replace the .MTS with .MPG (.WMV will also work).

If you are running Windows, you can try right clicking on the file and selecting the rename option from the pulldown, it might reveal the .MTS extension.

Another method is to use the Command Prompt (DOS) Rename command (this will show the file extension). From the Command Prompt type Rename [drive: [path] filename1 filename2.

Example: say you copied the files to your thumb drive that is recognized as drive F:, you would type "rename F:\\00001.mts 00001.mpg" (without the quotes). File 00001.MTS would be renamed to 00001.mpg and should play from the thumb drive on the BRDVD3.

If you want to do all of the files at once, you would type "rename F:\\*.mts *.mpg"
