Insignia NS-BRDVD3 - Netflix & BD-Live - Want Your Opinions - Page 20

Just picked one up today, connected mine with a wired connection to do the firmware upgrade and then had no problems at all with connecting to wireless. Netflix works great. Quality is good even over 3 Mbps DSL.

One thing that I am disappointed about so far is that it doesn't resume play from the last point on the DVD after a power down. I find that pretty annoying since I have kids and never get to watch anything all the way through in one sitting.

A minor annoyance... it came with a default setting for the optical out that did not work with my home theater and it took me 20 min + to figure it out and set it right.

As others have said, the loading and spin-up sounds are pretty disturbing, but I'm okay with that for $119!

I picked up the wireless NS-WBRDVD and hooked it up (wired) and had no trouble updating to the latest firmware. Mine also makes quite a bit of noise
loading blu-ray's but is quiet during the movie playback. Video is equal to my ps3 and HTPC blu-ray software playback. Audio decoded and sent PCM to my AVR sounds the same as the ps3 also.

I just bought this and am now setting up my external USB HD. Do I still need FAT32 or can I now use NTFS with latest firmware update? Also, assuming I do need FAT32, can I break my many 6-8Gig avi files into 2 files so that I can save them to HD and play them on this unit?

Swap out the HDMI cable from a known working configuration. I've seen many reports of bad HDMI cables.

Still FAT32...I doubt you'll ever see a firmware upgrade for these allowing NTFS.

I wonder if the lack of NTFS support is a copy protection measure. Do any players read files off NTFS drives? Perhaps the Blu-Ray overlords don't want people to be able to download 4gig+ files (blu ray quality).

I have had two different players hooked up to two different 37" Vizio's and it displayed 1080p no problem. Not sure what would be causing the issue of it not displaying - HDMI cable maybe?

I doubt it. The most likely reason they don't support NTFS is that it is a proprietary Microsoft format. FAT32 has open specifications and is relatively simple while NTFS has no open documentation and is fairly complicated (Linux didn't get a stable read/write NTFS driver until 2007 (!) despite high user demand). The USB port was put on this unit primarily for BD-Live and avi/mkv/mpg/etc. playback was probably included only because the stock firmware for the SOC in this player had that feature built-in. It's not a marketed feature of this player and the manual is even confused about it (claiming only WMV support despite also talking about DivX/Xvid). In short, be happy with you have because it could be worse.

P.S.: you can still play larger files by pre-splitting them in to 4 GB chunks using an MKV splitter tool. Google for MKV split.

Thanks, Mr. Radar. Along those lines, VirtualDub is a free, easy program that can split up AVI files into smaller segments.

Purchased the NS-WBRDVD for Xmas. Wireless didn't accept WEP key so temporarily switched to no security. Have an excellent rated connection with the player and router 6 feet apart. D/Led the Netflix firmware from my PC to a USB since it wouldn't work from the player. Once Netflix works playback is fine. However if I rewind, pause, fast forward or when a movie ends, it loses the connection. Sometimes I can get by on a reconnect but most of the time I have to turn off/on the player. Is this par for the course or should I exchange it?

Thanks, just wanted to make sure that I shouldn't have a problem with my 47" Vizio HDTV. Haven't made a decisions yet on a Blu-ray player, $119 sounds nice, but I want one I can buy and not want to replace 6 months down the road.

Can the firmware update be done by hooking the player wired to my PC without it being hooked up to the HDTV? My HDTV is 35 feet away from my PC and internet connection and I have no ethernet cables that long. I operate wireless to the HDTV, but wasn't sure if I needed a long cable or could the Blu-ray player be updated at my PC without the HDTV being connected.

Just download the firmware to a USB drive like I did and plug it into the back of the player.

I updated the firmware via wireless connection.

I received my unit from Bestbuy.ca on Dec 31. I updated the firmware and tried a couple of disks for about 10 minutes each. TrueHD showed on my Onkyo 805's display when playing Harry Potter Half -Blood Prince and DTS-HD when playing Silence of the Lambs.

I just got the player and have played 10-12 movies on it and the audio has started to echo a couple of times each movie for about 15-20 seconds. It has even done it on Netflix movies. I changed the HDMI cable today and it still did it on the very next movie I played. Has anyone else experienced this? Should I exchange the player for a new one?
Thanks.

Proper settings depend entirely on your equipment. Please tell us what the player is connected to and how and what are it's capabilities (HDMI/Optical/Coax, receiver decodes HD audio or not, etc.)? If I had to guess, I'd say the echo is because you have sound coming from 2 devices at the same time (tv speakers and receiver), or there is some kind of loop.

Anyone else having fullstop issues playing over 4gb .mkv files? happens around the 45 min mark.

It's just hooked straight to my Toshiba 40xv645U. The TV is connected to my 10 year old Sony reciever for sound. The echo only happens once or twice a movie and lasts for about 30 seconds. It does not do it on tv broadcasts or the VCR.

Yup, I'm having trouble on a WBRDVD player with MKV files (over 4gb) burned to DVD. One just stopped at 52 minutes...

Anyone have any idea if this is just the limitation for MKV support on blu-ray players as a whole??

So you're getting sound from the tv speakers and the stereo. You really should get sound from one or the other. I'd connect the player to your receiver for sound (via optical if possible). Your tv probably isn't passing surround to your receiver anyway, so this will be a big improvement. Then, when you watch a blu-ray, turn your tv sound down all the way. Then you'll never get an echo. If you do connect your player via optical, you'll want to change the audio setting to bitstream mixed (assuming your receiver decodes surround). Then you'll get Dolby 5.1 and DTS, same as I get from my 10 yr old receiver. Otherwise leave the audio setting as is and use the red/white audio cables.

BTW, optical cables are only about $2 at monoprice.com.

Thanks for the advice. I will give that a try. Yes, the receiver does have 5.1.

The problem with H.264 conversion is that it takes twice as long as a wmv or Divx conversion. This isn't a big problem because I do the conversions overnite.

How fast is fast forward. I have watched shows recorded in wmv and avi and I only get 1x FF. I would like to FF faster through commercials.

f1usgp, I have the WBRDVD and have also experienced echo problems. Mine only occur on the dialogue of the movie and only when I'm watching movies streamed from Netflix. Blu-ray and standard DVDs sound fine.

I have a surround-sound DD and DTS decoding Yamaha receiver that is also about 10 years old (read no HDMI). I have the WBRDVD attached to the receiver via an optical cable. While watching Netflix streaming the only surround setting that is tolerable on my system is "ES." That still sounds better than non-surround, but I would like the option of using some of my other surround settings. I have the Blu-ray audio setting on "Bitstream Mixed," although I experimented a bit with the different settings to see what would produce the best result, and never could remove the echo.

I'm going to try posting on Insignia's forums to see if they have any ideas. I have a feeling though it has something to do with a basic incompatibility between my legacy receiver and the way Netflix streams audio. I'm also going to try and find out if people that own Netflix streaming Blu-ray players from other vendors (Sony, LG, etc...) and are using legacy-era receivers, are experiencing similar problems.

Bud-man, others...

It seems that there is around a 2 gig limit on mkv files before they start to have problems. A decent solution is to split up your mkv movies into smaller files with a program like mkvmerge.

here is a thread on this very issue:

For Canadian users, there is a firmware update available now.

I split an MKV file last night...worked out okay, but, the two files had some audio issues in them.
First file glitched for a minute before the end of the file, 2nd file glitched a bit for a minute at the beginning of the file. So, basically glitching where the split occurs...
