Insignia NS-BRDVD3 - Netflix & BD-Live - Want Your Opinions - Page 26

The main menu has audio playing [theme song] but the episode selection menu does not.

I didn't think newer plasmas exhibited burn-in???

I just purchased a BRDVD3 and I am having an odd issue. Upon initial hookup, i set the resolution to HDMI Auto, and when i played a SD DVD the image started flickering randomly about 3 minutes into playback. A few minutes later it was flickering more often and the sound was cutting out when it flickered. The flicker I would describe as slim to wide gray lines with some static, and 10th (or less) of a second loss of the image signal.

I cancelled playback and the issue was happening in the player menu as well. I swapped out the HDMI cable for a component cable, and the issue was still there.I went back to the HDMI cable and mid playback, with the issue still happening, i switched the resolution to 720p, and the issue was gone completely.

The issue came back when i switched the resolution to 1080p and 1080i, but its gone with 720p and 480p. Seems that the player either has an issue displayng 1080 lines or it has an issue with interlacing. This is all with SD playback, i have not yet tested it in 1808p with a blu-ray yet.

Anyone have an issue like this?
I have no issues with 1080p. What model tv do you have? Have you turned off 24p in the player?
I have an LG 42LH40, and I believe i have turned off 24p. Although, I do have film mode on within the TV's expanded settings. Does turning 24p on within the player cause similar issues as what I am experiencing?
Hmm... I don't know what's going on. That tv should handle 24p and any resolution just fine.

I don't see a dedicated owner thread for the NS-WBRDVD, so I figured I'd post here. I picked up a store display today at BB with a remote for $70. Been playing around with it for a while and am pleasantly surprised. I loaded a few BDs as well as DVDs and everything I tried played, including the new Twilight New Moon BD movie. Also, the built-in WiFi worked great and connected immediately, offering to update my firmware.

I expected BD PQ to be on par with just about every other player and it is. But, the DVD PQ is better than I thought it would be and the Netflix was a snap to set up. I basically was streaming movies in a few minutes. I especially like being able to see more than just my Instant Queue on the NF menu.

In addition, the player loads pretty quickly for a BD player. I've also got an LG BD390 and minus additional features such as DLNA and the ability to use the NTFS format, this Insignia stacks up pretty well. And for the price I paid, I think I can remain happy with this player.

One thing I'm curious about is who manufactures this player? I've done some searching and it appears that it's made by Desay. Although I've also seen some forum threads that seem to think it's a Samsung??? Anyway, looks like a really decent player and I like the idea of a 1yr warranty, as opposed to those chintzy 90 day labor warranties some CEs offer.

Insignia NS-BRDVD3 is made by the same factory in China that makes LG and Samsung BD players. They tell what features and specifications they want. Best Buy does the same and cuts out the middleman. LG and Samsung mark up their BD players from factory cost to sell in Best Buy to make a profit. Best Buy gets the BD players straight from the factory, changing the faceplate and design a little. Also a few less features, which are not missed. I don't need Pandora and Blockbuster online, Netflix as the single choice is good enough.

I assume the wireless model is made in the same place.

Thanks for your reply. The info I saw on slickdeals, indicates that both NS-WBRDVD and NSBRDVD3 are made by Desay. I guess Desay must manufacture players for LG, Samsung and probably others.

From a previous thread regarding who makes Insignia Players.
Insignia products are made by the following companies (note Sony isn't one of them):

Top Victory (Fujian)
Desay
Funai
Orion
SDI (Samsung)
LGE (LG)
Apex

Best Buy Insignia Blu-ray player history is:

1. NS-BRDVD - Made by Funai.
2. NS-2BRDVD - Made by Samsung.
3. NS-BDBDLIVE01 - Made by Desay.
4. NS-WBRDVD - Made by Desay.
5. NS-BRDVD3 - Made by Desay.

Thanks again for your reply.

There is a thread on the WBRDVD here: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=1208731. I don't think there is an official thread though. Not enough people have it I guess.

Yes, thank you. I found that thread earlier when doing a search but felt it was a dead thread. Figured these two players are very similar and this thread seemed to have more action.

Been putting this player through it's paces and it's a bit quirky. I put in a 2gb USB stick with a couple of pics and it was fine the first time. When I shut down the player and rebooted, it just hung with "USB in" on the display. I powered down and rebooted a few more times and it seems ok.

Also, a little flakey with HDMI handshake, just like LG and Samsung. It doesn't help that my AVR, HK 254 is also flakey with HDMI. I find that if I fast forward or sometimes pause for a few minutes, I'll also lose audio and it comes back by changing sources on my AVR. It does this with my LG BD390, as well as the Insignia. My Sony N460 doesn't have this issue, so it has to be the way certain manufacturers implement HDMI. Of course, I know my HK 254 also has it's own HDMI issues. I still think the Insignia is a pretty nice player, I'll push it a little harder over the next few days, got 30 days to road test it. For the price I paid, short of completely crapping out, I can deal with the quirks.

FWIW, I never could get my unit to play a USB stick. It recognizes when I insert it, but nothing else happens. Nada. Zilch. The rest of the unit works OK, though it rejected a DVD-R, but that only happened once. I guess like any other electronic device, it has its quirks but for the price you can't go wrong...

What is the file format on the usb drive? I think it needs to be fat or fat32. What firmware version do you have?
Does anybody know if this thing will play back rewritable BDs? Either BD-R or BD-RE?

Thanks!
BD-R and BD-RE aren't listed as "playable" in the manual (pg 6). If you own the player, just try it.

I know, but with firmware upgrades and everything, I thought maybe the manual was not completely accurate.

That's my plan, but I don't own any BD-REs yet, so I just thought I'd check to see if anyone else had tried it yet.

I've made several AVCHD discs, using Multi-AVCHD, burned with IMGBURN (UDF-250) on various media (Verbatim, Fujifilm)- these discs play very well in the cheap HD Blu Ray Player...no problem.

We bought the INSIGNIA NS-WBRDVD Player, simply because it could stream Netflix..however, before I bought the player, I did some investigation.. I downloaded the INSIGNIA NS-WBRDVD users manual, which also (albeit somewhat ambigiously) indicated that this unit can play AVCHD Discs.

We bought the Insignia, (gave the HP Blu Ray player to our kid). Sure, the INSIGNIA plays back commercial Blu Ray discs very well, and streams Netflix well..however, when I play any one of my AVCHD discs, the INSIGNIA WBRDVD recognises them as BR (the BR Icon appears, but, the tray will re-open, then nothing more happens.. the Insignia will simply grin at me.

Yes, the Insignia firmware is up to date.

Sooo,, what am I doing wrong?

Any suggestions, or ideas are greatly appreciated !

If anyone's interested, I finally tried some BD-REs and they work fine.

Just wondering if there's anyone out there who is unhappy with the Neflix performance of this player. I'm noticing a dramatic difference in picture quality between the Insignia and my HTPC.

The HTPC is significantly better, which seems weird to me because the research I've done on the Web says that Netflix is not streaming HD to PCs but they are streaming it (when available) to approved HD devices.
I'm seeing the opposite on my 3 players (1 wired, 1 bridged to wireless N, 1 bridged to wireless G). Insignia is much better than my HTPC. HD streaming is generally excellent for me, even with my paltry 6Mb DSL. But I do have to be careful no one else is hogging all my bandwidth when I'm streaming (kid's playing online games, videos, etc.).
Happy with netflix-good picture....same as the xbox360 no diffrence in pix quality

Netflix works pretty well for us. I will agree with the previous poster - other people in the house occassionally eat up some of the bandwidth. But, for the most part, we're quite pleased with how it works.

Our setup is - wired connection to one PC and Insignia player, wireless connection to second PC and Ipod Touch.

We can watch movies usually when 3 people are active on the connection, and we don't have a lot of problems.

Well I have a wired connection to both devices too, and I've tested with no other network activity so I know it's not a bandwidth issue.

Is there some setting or preference with Netflix that I don't know about? I signed up for the Blu Ray service.

I use BDREBUILDER to convert Blu-Ray movies to fit on a Verbatim DVD+R Dual layer disc. Can this Insignia BS-BRDVD3 player playback Blu-ray conversions that uses the Verbatim DVD+R Dual Layer discs? I'd like to know before I pull the trigger on this Insignia blu-ray player. It would be one of the deciding factors other than using it for live streaming from Netflix.

I'd appreciate any comments. Thanks in advance!

I've had no luck getting the NS-BRDVD3 to read a dual layer DVD+R AVCHD disc. Even though the player detects it as a BD-Rom, it ejects it immediately.

I just received my NS-BRDVD3 which I got from the bay from under $50 including shipping, this totally blew my mind.

I can say it works pretty well. It is as fast as my Samsung BD-P1950 but the picture quality is not exactly up to par with it. There is a certain flatness to it, it's hard to describe. It is not a resolution issue, I checked, but it is just slightly off. Netflix also is a little less quality than in the Samsung, but I really can't complain for the price.

This really puzzles me, one would think that by having a digital connection all the way to the screen (HDMI), it would not matter what player you use at all. The same way you don't expect a Sony branded DVD PC drive to send your hard drive files that are anymore accurate that those read using a generic DVD drive.

But for some reason this proves not true and the picture does look a little less quality, a little more cartoonist, but never mind I am certainly splitting hairs here. All in all it is a great player for the price.

FWIW...I also own both a BD-P1590 and an NS-BRDVD3. I don't see any difference in PQ either viewing a BD or streaming Netflix movies.

Really? Are you watching it at 1080P?

How about noise? My samsung's drive is completely silent, although you can hear the cooling fan a little bit, the insignia on the other hand makes quite a bit of noise, similar to a PC dvd drive speeding up.

Thanks for replying to my question. I guess I'll just skip the Insignia NS-BRDVD3 and maybe get the Panasonic BD85.

Are there feature differences between this and the elite version other than wifi?

In other words, if running a wire to the player isn't a problem, is there any reason to get the elite version over this player?
