PN63B590 in the House...LCD Guy sees the light!

Hi all

After many, many months of research and waiting for the new big LCD's to come out, I finally bought a TV...but instead of buying the new Samsung 65" LCD (I was on the pre-order list with Crutchfield), I wound up buying a Samsung PN63B590 Plasma instead.

My decision was based on my need for a large screen TV and my finances...I can't afford the near $5k for the LCD...so I "settled" for the Plasma.

I must say I was somewhat skeptical of Plasma due to their relatively dim appearance vs LCD when viewed side by side at the local Best Buy.
Well, my new 63" Sammy was delivered this evening and all I can say is WOW!

I can't believe how sharp, bright & contrasty this set is!
On top of that...No Buzzing!!!

For those of you on the fence about buying a Plasma because you think they are too dim...don't be swayed by how they look in the store. It really is true what you read on this Forum...Plasma's look incredible when you see them in the home environment.

I'm so glad I took the leap of faith and bought the Plasma!

I'm sitting here watching 63" of glorious College Football action feeling like a kid on Christmas morning.

Hi Pete
I'm about to do the same as you did. I've been researching Plasmas by reading posts here on AVS and also online reviews.

To make a long story short, I've decided to sell my 40" XBR7 LCD and buy the Panasonic TC-P50V10.

I haven't actually seen one in person, so I'm relying on what I read here and in the online reviews.

I'm 100% sure I'll be a happy camper.

Bob aka Videoz.

Bob,

Go for the Plasma.
I think you will be very happy.

As an aside, I was at Best Buy today buying a wireless router.
I stopped into the Magnolia section to see if they lowered the price on my TV.
My visit reinforced to me that you cannot fully evaluate a Plasma in the store.

Well said Pete. I enjoy tweaking the settings myself.

Jack,

I'm sure the Panny is a fine set.

However, as we speak I'm sitting here with a huge smile on my face watching College Football on my 63" Samsung.
This is one awesome TV!

Good luck with which ever TV you choose.

Pete

Thanks for the advice.

The samsung just to my eye has a sharper more precise screen image.. No matter how I try and rationalize it i cannot get past that..

This is not the first tv I have ever purchased.. In fact I am "retiring" a 62 inch 4 year old mitsubishi 1080i DLP that at the time was one of the more progressive TV's on the market..

So I like to think I know picture quality and this Samsung so far, for the time I have played with it beats the 65V10..

I have 2 other Samung LCD's in my home.. both 40 inches and we have had those for 2 and 3 years and could not be happier..

So what am I missing here??

Jack,

I am extremely happy with my Sammy.
I say go for it. Buy it from a store that has a liberal 30 day return policy.

I think you will be happy with it.

I also have had the 63" 590 for the past month. Best purchase I've ever made.

Besides Worst Buy, HH Gregg if you have one near you stocks the PN63B590.

I have no regrets what so ever!

I agree 100& with Chris. Had the Sammy UN55B8000 LED LCD. Returned it and now have the PN63B590. All I can say is Plasma still rules. Deeper blacks, better PQ all around and Size, 63 versus 55 for less money. I know there is a large LCD following and these sets seem to sell better. However, if you consider yourself an Audiophile type, then Plasma is the way to go. This set is awesome, no regrets.

And the very interesting thing that I've noticed so far. Samsung has released multiple firmware upgrades to tons of their models (I also have a 42b550) and their 600 series models.

But not a single firmware upgrade yet to the 590! Now, that's just on observation but I also haven't noticed many people reporting any type of symptomatic issues on the 590. Could it be they got one right?

That difference would more than cover the cost of an OPPO BDP-83...

Exactly!
I used the money I saved (vs. The Sammy 65" LCD) to buy an Oppo BD83 plus an Onkyo 886 PrePro!
