Need receiver for 9.2 HT system

Hi Everyone,

I have 21'x46' finished basement. I am using 21'x18' of that area for my HT. The ceiling height is roughly 7.5'. I originally had a 7.1 setup using Polk speakers driven by HK AVR-630 receiver. I just redid my setup with Energy RC speakers as follows:

RC70s - FR/FL
RCLCR - CC
RC50s - SR/SL
RC10s - SBR/SBL

I am still looking for a pair of decent subs (considering eD, SVS, Hsu, Outlaw etc.). I was originally planning to do a 7.2 system, but now there may be a possibility of a 9.2 system (with Height channels, most likely RC10s or RC-Minis). I have read many threads with people questioning if the extra 2 height/width channels are really worth it. I guess, we won't know until we try.

So, I am looking to take a stab at it; I can always go back to the 7.2 system at any time . I know, all my buddies on the Energy owners thread will be laughing their guts out at this point, and ready to pounce on me -- 'coz I can't make up my mind Oh well, what the heck!

I was originally leaning towards a DENON receivers as they seemed very popular with Energy speaker owners, and of course, they do have a great reputation. However, I found Denons to be roughly 20-25% more expensive than similarly featured ONKYO receivers (e.g., at $1,500 msrp, we have Onkyo NR1007 9.2 receiver vs. Denon 3310ci 7.1 receiver). Not sure why that is? Perhaps someone can enlighten me on that. With my limited knowledge, I am sure I am missing something important.

My system will have a Blu-ray DVD player (to be decided), DirecTV HD receiver (already have) and a gaming device (XBox or PS3 - still undecided). The video up-conversion is great but not important (since the PJ is limited to 720p). Of course, down the road I may upgrade to a 1080p PJ, so I'd like to have good up-conversion option (via HDMI) on the receiver (primarily for DirecTV). This system will be primarily used as: 85% movies, 10% music, 5% gaming.

I am looking for recommendations for a 9.2 receiver. At my price point of $1,000, Onkyo NR1007 seem like a decent choice, but I am open to suggestions. My needs are NOT urgent, so I can wait.

Thanks for all inputs.

I just commented on your other thread. Some things to make note of here. If your going 9.2 as in dual subls ( I highly recommend you do with that many cubic feet) all the Denons except for the 5803 and above are actually x.1 receivers as they send the same signal to both sub outputs as with the the Onkyo 807 and below. The 1007 which you are looking into has the ability to adjust both subs independanly, Audyssey will ping each one and set the proper distances and levels automatically. This is a great advantage over trying to properly place and configure dual subs manually. I was all set to pull the trigger on the new 4310 Denon as I wanted to go with DSX until I looked at the Onkyo 807. A feature that the Onkyo's have with DSX that Denon ommitted is the ability to hook up and calibrate all 11 speakers and then be able to swap between Heights and wides just with the remote. On the Denon you have to re-wire and re-run Audyssey if you ever want to try the other modes. I bought an 807 and hooked all speakers up and had a blast( so much so that I ordered the 1007 and sold the 807 just to have 9.2 over 7.2). You may not think you want Heights vrs Wides yet, but if you ever decide to add the added 2 speakers from 9.2 to 11.2 you will be all set...... Denon just didn't present the right mix of features vrs price point that Onkyo did this year I'm sure they will rectify that until then you really can't go wrong with the 1007

Well, looks like 1007 may be what I am looking for though I literally hate the aesthetics of Onkyo (just my personal opinion). But heck, if it does the job who cares! LOL

Looks like the prices are back up to $1500 range now. Will have to wait to get that <$1000 deal. Let me know if anyone knows of one.

Yeah.. I do have 7,200 cubic feet of space, though the HT area is less roughly about 3,000 cf.

From your comments I am assuming you have a 9.2 setup already. What kind of speakers are you using for "height" channels? I am guessing that since they wouldn't be used that much, some decent SMALL satellites that can be wall-mounted would suffice?

I am also in the hunt for a pair of nice subs. Any suggestions for $1,000/pr?

Subs from av123(dot)com. The MFW-15 (designed by Mark Seaton) should fit the bill and they have a discount on two which is under your budget.

pair of outlaw lfm-1 ex? just a tiny hair over budget...$519 each, shipped, on special through tomorrow (normally $650 ea). check the outlaw thread in the sub forum for a whole lot of satisfied customers.

av123 deal is $1100/pr, not sure about shipping. also excellent subs.
