The Projector Central Projection calculator seems to be wrong on their fl measurements on the RS15, it is lower than the 550.

My screens a Carada Brilliant White. Rated 1.3 gain with an actual in the 1.1 range so I have read.. :-)

As for contrast - I'm not sure.

I also have developed the PINK STRIPE on the left side. My RS15 is 23.25 months old and purchased from AVS. I called AVS and they gave me a number to the VRU, that is totally useless. I have 1800 hours on the lamp. I've not had much luck contacting JVC to schedule repairs. Haven't tried the 800-JVC-JVC5 number yet. Will try it on Monday. Maybe I'm paranoid, but sending a $5K projector to an address found on a web site without an RMA # is wrong. I have 3 weeks to get this in for warranty. Has anyone been able to get an RMA number from JVC?
Don't wait, just ship it. I didn't talk to anyone first.

My update is I finally got the projector back after about a month. Seems to be working fine, but one has to wonder if it's on the clock again.

JVC does not issue RMA's for servicing of projector. You have to fill out the form and send it to the address listed on the form with a copy of your sales receipt. I lucked out as it only took 1 week to fix, almost 3 to get it shipped back. Make sure to take pictures of the projector before sending it to them. I did this because I read someone sent their projector in and the housing came back scratched and damage. Even though they replaced it when they sent it back, it is better to have before and after photos of the repair to ensure no added damage is present.

8/29/2011 Well, JVC's solution is a colossal failure. They gave me a B Stock HD250 as a replacement. B stock means the projector was used for demonstration purposes. The timer had 20 hours on it when I got it. The projector lasted one week with about 5 hours of use, and now won't start up because something is failing in the bulb circuitry. This really sucks.
8/29/2011 Update2. They are sending me a new bulb, but I happened to have a brand new bulb for my now defunct JVC-RS15. I put it in the projector and it didn't light up either. By the way, I haven't been working through JVC anymore because they are completely useless. The reseller I bought it through is fighting the good fight for me. We'll see what they can do for me now.

If anyone's counting like I am, that's three months without a working projector.

Update 9/13/2011: I have a RS15 back in my house. Not my original one. Finally got it yesterday. I assume it is B Stock, but they claimed it didn't have any time on it. At the very least, the lamp timer was reset. Everything about it works like my original did when I bought it. None of the weird problems I had with the HD250. We'll have to see if it lasts a week or at least a couple of years. This was a painful ordeal, and I still don't think they get how bad it is to treat someone this poorly after you have given them $5K for something that only worked for less than two years. By the time it's all said and done I'll end up with three new bulbs for the trouble. Fat chance the projector will last long enough to use any of them. I guess I can swap in a fresh one every six months or something. I'm going much cheaper next time so when it fails in two years, I can throw it away and get the next latest cheap one.

What is the best choice for Blue Ray player on a JVC DLA RS15 projctor

Nothing really specifically needed for the RS15. HDMI out to in and you're there! There are many threads to help with selection and pricing of BD players in the "Blu-ray Players" section under "Blu-ray & HD DVD Area". http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?f=149

The first sticky is the "OFFICIAL HELP ME CHOOSE A PLAYER" thread!

Since I am running the HDMI cable directly to the RS15 would it be an advantage to gave a BR player with two outputs, to send one to the AV receiver? Currently I am using an optical output from Blue Ray to Receiver?

If your receiver is capable of decoding Dolby True HD and DTS-MA then yes because you can't send those over optical.

Is there a location problem that keeps you from running the HDMI from the player to the receiver and then to the projector?

Don't receivers that accept HDMI also pass it along, unmolested, out an HDMI out port for the display? They usually have a built in HDMI switcher.
I thought a direct conect to RS15 would be best for picture quality
I can send the info to the Yamaha RX-V765 and then on th RS15
Is there no loss when you send to Receiver first?

Thanks for the advice. I had sent an email to the support team and they informed me the same info, complete the form, and ship it back with a copy of the receipt. They answered my email quickly, hoping the repair time is reasonable. Took pictures also. It arrived at JVC Sept 19 and shows status of "parts in transit". I'll post my repair time when it is returned. At least I'm still in warranty period by a couple of weeks.

I am very happy with my Oppo BDP-83. More expensive than many but a great machine. Quick boot, great video and audio! Good luck in your search.

Like others, my RS10 (sorry, I know this is an RS15 thread, but this seems like a more common issue here) developed the same PINK STRIPE on the side of the screen as reported by others. It is out of warranty by about 10 months, 1400 hrs on lamp.

The stripe started small but then grew. I sent it in. After 2 weeks, they list on the repair tracking site that the cost to fix will be a staggaring ~$2800. I have called support several times and they say the notes indicate the problem is the optical block and they "cannot repair at present." I finally convinced the support person to escalate my case, but after several days have not heard back.

Has anybody had a satisfactory resolution of this OUTSIDE the warranty period?
I have been a JVC DLA fan for a long time, and was considering upgrading, but not if my next JVC pj is going to develop a problem right after the warranty expires that costs as much to fix as a new projector. Any words of advise for this problem, or to generally help restore my faith in JVC projectors??

Now I have received my rs15, I am looking for a screen. I first wanted to go with diy fixed screen, but for WAF reason, I should go with roll screen. It will be place in a dark room.

I have been on the internet to find some references and find a couple of budget screen, near my place:

a 150" Elite screen manual for about 200$

120" tensioned electrical screen for 290 $ http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-120-Tab-...item27bb834152

My seating distance will be about 14'. I use to have a 150" acoustic fixed screen in my previous location, but I can't find any acoustic screen others than fixed. I still have my acoustic screen material and i wonder if i could use it on one of this cheap screen system by removing the original fabric?

Is there a big gap in quality with more expensive screen?

thanks for your help.

Was there a way to get the apeture to do 16 steps like the rs25 can? I swear I read that somewhere but I can't seem to find it.

IF the RS 15 is like the RS 10, then by going into the service menu, you can reassign the 3 settings along a 16 step scale, but you only have access to 3 settings from the UI.

This allows you to customize what steps the three setttings map to internally.

Hope that helps!

Yes, I do it on my HD350 (RS10). You have to go into the service menu (up, down, right, left and enter, very quickly): You can only adjust the 'preset' that you are currently using when you enter the SM. You have to exit the SM and chose a different iris 'preset' to change that. It doesn't give you any brighter or dimmer than factory though. As standard you get fully open, mid way and minimum. I use the finer steps to balance my 2.35:1 with lens on screen lux to my 16:9 non lens lux (I aim for 95 lux which equals 12-13fL on my screen).

Hope this helps.

So I was able to access the service menu and adjust the 3 aperture sizes on my rs15. Now I don't have to go blind on my 106" high power screen, yet have enough pop to the image too. I'm right at about 12 or 13. Thanks again for the help!

No worries, glad it was useful.

For what it's worth, you guys in the US have it easy. In Australia/New Zealand JVC projectors only have a 1 year warranty. Luckily (kind of) we use our projector a LOT so I got to the 2000 hour lamp mark in JUST over a year (3 weeks to be precise) when the dreaded pink stripe appeared. After finding this thread and a couple of others I've sent mine into the nearest JVC service centre immediately. After speaking with JVC they've said they'll "likely" still cover the cost of repair, (even though it's 3 weeks outside of the warranty period) but they may still change their mind.

This is a bit depressing because the HD550 is easily the best projector we've ever had, but this is a BIG fault, and we've not had any guarantees yet that the problem won't re-occur with the new optical block. I guess it's too early yet for anyone to report whether this has happened to them?

Also, for what it's worth, neither my dealer nor the guy I spoke with at JVC claim to have heard of this issue before.

I ve just been in the service menu and seen a lot of additional option. Is there any guide or manual that explain the purpose of all this additional tunes and options?

UPDATE: I do have an update, but without a good ending, I fear.

After weeks of waiting, calling service, always getting to the 1st-tier consumer products support people with little authority or interest in my problem, promises of escalating my issue to higher-ups, but then more waiting (the traumatic details of which I will spare you), I finally talked to somebody who had a clue. He said he would talk to the factory manager to see what could be done. (Ironically the first time I called the factory, the person who answered said she talked to the manager, but then said they were powerless unless they heard from a mystery supervisor somewhere.) In the end, the person with the clue said that he had been able to, with difficulty, convince the factory manager to do it for 1/2 off, about ~$1500.

Now I had drawn an imaginary line in my head of $1000, below which I would agree and above which I would not. I told the person this, and asked if he could try again. After a couple more days of hearing nothing, I called and the person said he thought that was the best that could be done. SO, after some serious thinking, I have elected to decline, and have asked for the projector to be sent back to me, unfixed.

Here is my thinking: I am really of two minds on this.
1) About 70% of me is VERY unhappy with this outcome. 2 years and 10 months after purchasing a product with a 2-year warranty I am expected to pay ~$1,500 to maintain it in good shape. That is ridiculous. That amount of money would go a long way towards a new projector. And to make matters worse, I have historically liked the JVC DLA projectors so much that I would be tempted to go for a new RS45 or even RS55, since I sit close (1.2x) to my screen and have unfortunately excellent eye-sight and am quick to notice pixel structure. One the other hand, this experience makes me want to throw away a decade of JVC projector loyalty for their awful customer service in light of what is obviously a known issue. Additionally, it seems as though I might be pushing my luck signing up for a new one, not knowing if these types of issues have been resolved, and also potentially signing up for new untested technologies such as the e-shift on the RS55.

2) But on the other hand, 30% of me notes that when I was able to get through to somebody who was competent and had some authority, he was able to split the difference. From a certain point of view, this seems reasonable. And I have a feeling that I was actually not too far off, if I had better negotiating skills and a little more patience, from being able to get the whole thing taken care of by them. And of course I still have a fantasy that when this issue reaches some critical mass in a few months, maybe JVC will step up, contact me and offer to do a warranty fix -- only a dream I am sure.

SO, sorry for the long post, but I would be happy to hear opinions on my dilemma. Did I do the right thing to just get it back? Should I now abandon the JVC projectors I have liked so much, even though in terms of projector technology these projectors are now even better thought-of than when I started with my first DLA projector? Or can I chalk this up to a very unfortunate fluke, and stick with JVC?

My RS15 developed the pink stripe issue just in time for the warranty (22 months, 1100 hours). Thanks to the posts on this board I knew to act quickly. It took four weeks. My projector is the only TV in the house, so I spent four weeks watching stuff on my 14 inch laptop.

I took notes on the process in case it would help others. One key observation is to call JVC often. They have more information than what is posted on the web and sometimes the process is blocked waiting for input from you.

Four weeks is far from the 72 hour repair time that JVC promises for these projectors. JVC really needs to improve this. With that said, I was happy with the overall experience. When calling JVC (and pressing 7), I always got someone within a couple minutes. The people I talked to were professional and helpful, which was good considering how often I called!

--- Week 1 ---
Fri 9.30.11 -- Shipped via FedEx.

Tue 10.04.11 -- Delivered and signed by JVC

Wed 10.06 11 -- Still not in system. Called JVC. They said to wait a few more days.

--- Week 2 ---
Fri 10.07.11 -- Still not in system. Called JVC. They said to wait until Mon.

Mon 10.10.11 -- Status: RECEIVED.

Wed 10.12.11 -- Status still RECEIVED. Called JVC. They said it has been assigned to an engineer but work hasn't started. I mentioned my concern about the OB being the problem. He looked and saw there were 4 in stock.

--- Week 3 ---
Fri 10.14.11 -- Status: WAITING EST PRT with an estimated total of $265.30. Called JVC. They said the $265 was for a new lamp (wholesale price). I had 1100 hours on the old lamp and was fine to get a new one at that price. They also said the issue was the OB, and they were waiting for the part to be shipped from the warehouse. He looked a saw there were 2 still in stock and said that once it came in it would likely be repaired very quickly.

Wed 10.18.11 -- Status still WAITING EST PRT / $265.30. Called JVC. They said the OB has been replaced and they were waiting to see if I wanted bulb replaced. I wasn't contacted about this. They took my phone # and said they would get someone from the factory to call me back. The web page updated with a place to enter my credit card info. They called me back as promised. I had them change my shipping address (to my work) and also had them make a note to ship me back my old bulb (they should last to 2000 hrs or more and mine had just 1100 hrs). Status changed: WAITING ON PARTS.

Thu 10.19.11 -- Status: ACCEPTED. The web page says its been assigned to a technician.

--- Week 4 ---
Fri 10.20.11 -- Status still: ACCPETED. Called JVC. They said the lamp was in stock it would be likely be replaced that day.

Mon 10.24.11 -- Status: WAITING PARTS! Called JVC. They said that after replacing the lamp they noticed a problem with the switch holder. They said this part would come in today and would be replaced right away.

Tue 10.25.11 -- Status: DISPATCHED. The website has a tracking number. It actually shipped out Monday evening. Expected delivery is Wednesday.

Wed 10.26.11 -- UPS delivery failed. The address was wrong. I called JVC and they had the correct address on file. It seems that the address was written incorrectly (by JVC or UPS) on the shipping form. UPS said the package was still on the truck, so I have to wait another day to get it.

Thu 10.27.11 -- I picked up my projector at UPS. I hooked everything up and it is like new! No more pink stripe and 0 hours on the bulb. This picture is amazing, just like before. Let's just hope that the new optical block doesn't have this same problem or else I will be looking for a new projector in two years.
Wow. Is there hope that they'll get better at this? Make the fix quicker and more cheaply as the volume of this repair inevitably ramps up? As someone past warranty this all makes me very nervous.
I was moving some stuff around and accidentally gave the lens cover on my HD550 a good whack
It opens and closes but it sounds pretty bad, like a grinding noise
Can I fix it myself instead of having to send it in for repairs?
Thanks

Guys, I'm not getting the dreaded pink stripe issue on my rs15, but what I am getting is yellow and blue patches of noise on the picture especially in dark areas. The strange thing is that it goes away after about 15mins maybe after the projector has warmed up. Has anyone experienced this type of behavior? My perception of JVC is really starting to diminish.
