Direct TV lag between channels and also remote input lag

Hi guys. I just got a new Direct TV installation with HD channels and a HD DVR. Now there is terrible lag between channel change, as much as 8 seconds. And there is also terrible lag between remote input. For example when input any numbers on the remote, it can take as much as up to 1 second to register. I have a HR23-700 HD DVR. Any suggestions?

I have both an H20 and an HR20. Both are lousy for channel surfing for the exact reason you mentioned. DTV did a firmware update quite a while back that helped from the previous level, but it still is incredibly annoying. My HR20 DVR is far worse than the H20.

About all you can do is contact DTV and complain.

Do you have the output resolution set to Native?

Actually the HR20 is much faster than any of the newer models. There is a long thread over at DBS.com about the slow response times of the new DVRs. I replaced a defective 3-year old HR20 two weeks ago with a HR22 and can confirm that commands from a remote are very slow. So slow that many times it is easy to think that the command was never sent or received.

I'll check mine, also... How might that make a difference? Is there a setting that might improve performance response?

If the new receivers are slower than mine, might as well get a Dish box. A few years back on a visit to some friends' house, I commented that their Dish receiver was slower than cold molasses in changing channels....

If you're using Native mode and switching between SD and HD channels, you'll see a delay as the TV re-syncs on the new resolution it's receiving.

So am I to assume that it's a problem with my HR23 box? Because an 8 second lag is almost unacceptable. Is there anything else I can do besides complain and change the output to native?

Yes that is the problem I'm having with the remote. Sometimes I'll put in 206 for ESPN and it'll change to channel 2 or 20 or 26, but not 206. Overall everything seems slow. And this is extremely annoying.

Nope. DTV's DVRs are not (and never have been) good for channel surfing. Native "off" will help with speed, but may degrade your picture; not a good trade-off IMO. Reducing the number of screen resolutions that your TV will accept to a couple will help a little (I just have 720P and 1080i selected for my 1080P TV).

It is best just to use the User/Channel Guide to go to the channel you want and select it. If the show turns-out to be a bummer, just go back into the Guide and move on.

I am lucky that I have always hated to channel surf, however, my wife use to love to surf up of down one channel at a time, which drove me nuts. Finally, she got it! Just use the Guide.

From what I'm getting from you guys, it seems like the problem lies within the DTV HD DVR box, but could it be the satellite signal or installation?

Also is there any remedy for the remote control input lag?

Sorry, but no again. The issue is with the DVR, not other items in the system. Maybe someday DirecTV will release a firmware upgrade that will fix the problems. However, I have a feeling that we will have to wait for a new generation of DVRs.

You could try to see if DTV will exchange your unit for a refurbished HR20, but even with a HR20 do not expect a big improvement (but it will be noticeable).

Did you check to see if Native output is enabled or not? Trying to determine if that's adding to your delay or not.
