Great timing for this! Last year, I picked up Saints Row 2, LBP, and SOCOM.

Quote:
The Sale
Buy any two video games from anything in stock, and get a third game for free. The free game will either be the cheapest one, or the third game of three games with the same price point.

Is the sale online?
Yes, but until the deal goes online I do not know if there will be restrictions based on system or price point.

Is the deal available in Canada?
Sorry Canuckers

So if I buy three $60 games, I get a $60 game for free?
Yes, you can pick up any three games, at any price point. If three games are the same price the third one rang up at the register will be the free one.

Can I only get three games?
No, you can get as many games as you want, in multiples of three, and you will get a third free for every two you buy.

Can I mix and match my three games?
Yes, you can choose between all available systems for your three games. Example, you can buy two PS3 titles and one Wii title and get the least expensive one free.

What about bundled games (ex. DMC Triple Pack) of games that come with an accessory (ex. Guitar Hero)?
These games are also a part of the sale. As long as the product comes with video game software, no matter the price, it will count for the sale. The only exclusion will be the Wii Zapper.

But a game that comes out the 14th is what I really want, what about that?
Any game that comes out during the week of the sale will be part of the sale. For games that come out after the sale, see the Placeholder section of the FAQ.

Can I preorder a game as one of my games?
No. Unlike a Gamestop, you cannot fully put money down on future titles, only a small, $5 deposit. Games that come out after the 20th of October are not part of the sale.

How the Deal works at the register
(PAY ATTENTION IF YOU ARE CHANCING A RETURN)

Example one, three games, different prices.
000000000000 PS2 Madden 2007 $49.99
000000000000 X360 Dead Rising $59.99
000000000000 NDS Nintendogs Dalmation $29.99

When the three games get rung up, this is how they look on your receipt before the deal is taken off.
000000000000 PS2 Madden 2007 $49.99
000000000000 X360 Dead Rising $59.99
000000000000 NDS Nintendogs Dalmation $0.00

After the Total key is hit, the game that is the cheapest will go to $0.00. Does not matter the order it is rung, the cheapest one always comes off.

Example two, three games same price
000000000000 PS2 Madden 2007 $49.99
000000000000 X360 Lego Star Wars 2 $49.99
000000000000 PS2 Valkyrie Profile 2 $49.99

Once again, before the Total key is hit.

000000000000 PS2 Madden 2007 $49.99
000000000000 X360 Lego Star Wars 2 $49.99
000000000000 PS2 Valkyrie Profile 2 $0.00

When there are three games with the same price, the third game in the list will ALWAYS be the one that comes off as free.

Example three, six games or more, different prices
000000000000 PS2 Madden 2007 $49.99
000000000000 X360 Lego Star Wars 2 $49.99
000000000000 PS2 Valkyrie Profile 2 $49.99
000000000000 PS2 Madden 2007 $49.99
000000000000 X360 Dead Rising $59.99
000000000000 NDS Nintendogs Dalmation $29.99

Before Total is hit.

000000000000 PS2 Madden 2007 $49.99
000000000000 X360 Lego Star Wars 2 $49.99
000000000000 PS2 Valkyrie Profile 2 $0.00
000000000000 PS2 Madden 2007 $49.99
000000000000 X360 Dead Rising $59.99
000000000000 NDS Nintendogs Dalmation $0.00

When six games or more are bought, the system looks at games three at a time, depending in which order they were scanned, from top to bottom. Here we see that the third $49.99 game scanned, and the $29.99 game came off. It is very crucial that you pay attention to the order that the games are being scanned in when purchasing six or more titles.

Example four, odd amount of games purchased
000000000000 PS2 Madden 2007 $49.99
000000000000 X360 Lego Star Wars 2 $49.99
000000000000 PS2 Valkyrie Profile 2 $49.99
000000000000 NDS Nintendogs Dalmation $29.99

Before the Total key

000000000000 PS2 Madden 2007 $49.99
000000000000 X360 Lego Star Wars 2 $49.99
000000000000 PS2 Valkyrie Profile 2 $ 0.00
000000000000 NDS Nintendogs Dalmation $29.99

The register system will always look at the three most expensive games, making the free one out of that set. If you purchase an odd number of games, you do not have to worry if one of them is priced a lot lower then the ones you want for the sale.

Paying attention and knowing this stuff is incredibly important when you are buying multiples of games, and "placeholder" titles for mid week releases.

Return Policy
TRU's video game return policy is 45 days, unopened with a dated receipt or gift receipt. If the game is opened, it can only be exchanged with the same title. No exceptions.

Due to how the deal is rang up, the games that do not come up free can be returned or exchanged for it's full value. The game that rings up free cannot be returned or exchanged because it has no value, only if it is defective can it be exchanged for the same title. Make sure the free game is something you want, or you are pretty much boned.

TRU's M-Rated Policy
Toys R Us has a very strict policy towards M rated software. A very small selection of M rated titles are in view on the floor, the rest are kept locked up behind the register in the glass case. You must be 17 or older with proper identification to buy any M rated game at TRU. If you are interested in a M rated title you do not see, ask an associate if they have it locked up in the back.

How to properly buy Placeholder games
I cannot guarantee this will work at all Toys R Us stores, some management might be against the idea, use at your own risk.

If a game you really want is coming out after the sale ends, but you don't want to risk missing out on something on the shelves right now, the step by step here is what you do. Remember, the return policy is set at 45 days from purchase.

1. Pick the two games that you want.

2. Pick up a game that has the same price point as the game coming out, and the same price point as the two games you picked up. Example, if the game you want is $60, buy three $60 games during the week.

3. Make sure that every third game rung up, the free one, is NOT the placeholder game, but one you want to keep. DO NOT LOSE THE RECEIPT!

4. When the game you want comes in, bring the receipt and the placeholder game to the customer service desk, and tell them that you want to exchange the game for something else. Make sure you make specific that you want to keep the one or two games, and that you want one or two different games instead. MAKE SURE THE GAME YOU WANT TO RETURN IS NOT OPENED.

5. If everything is in order, the exchange will be finished and enjoy your new game!"

Hmm I dunno about this. I put the games I wanted on my birthday wish list. I'll go check it out and see, though. Maybe I can get some presents.
Nice! The ability to trade in games there sweetens up the deal too.
Sounds like Uncharted2, Demon's Souls, and a FIFA 10 placeholder to me
post #6 of 177
Too funny. Exact 3 I was planning on.

well well, might have to find a TRU...

Uncharted, Demon Souls, and... hmmm maybe OFP?

Hows TRU, do they usually have plenty of stock? Think they'll skimp on Uncharted?

I am, Forza 3 though. Last year it was Fable 2.

I am a big proponent of birthday presents for yourself.

Uncharted 2, Demon's Souls, and random $59.99 game. I'll keep the 3rd game sealed and return it for Modern Warfare 2. Hopefully this works.

The one by me did skimp. They had limited stock of the newer games and tried pushing the games that came out a few weeks before. Luckily, I have like 4 TRUs in a 10 mile radius.

Thanks for reminding me about the fact that they take trade ins. That's gonna be great!

R&C comes out on the 20th.... so is that part of the deal?

I did that last year with LBP. I bought 2 Saint's Rows and returned one the following week for LBP. Just make sure they don't ring up your "placeholder" game last because that will be the free game and you can't return it.

Also, it might be easier to get gift receipts for all of them.

You would need to buy a "placeholder" game and exchange it when it comes out.

Good idea.

I don't know where in Boston you are, but the TRU in Brockton seems to have a decent stock, and it doesn't seem to have much traffic in the game section.

So bascially I should have them ring these 3 games up in this order: NBA 2k 10(Keeping), ODST(place holder and returning to exchange for COD:MW2), NBA Live 10 (I keep this)
correct?
I did that last year, I had two games as placeholders but no tru in NY would do exchange it for me. So NY'ers be cautious.

This year though I'm doing it again, and if they will skimp again I'm just gonna trade it in, get the GC and buy Ratchet half price. It's better than nothing I guess.
The 3rd game they ring up is usually the free one. Just make sure to tell them that the placeholder game will be a gift, and that the person may already have the game and you may need to return it for another, so they shouldn't ring it up last. OR, ask for gift receipts for all three games; I believe this approach will work. However, I will make sure the 3rd game I buy will be one that I can live with just in case it blows up in my face.

I wouldn't try two placeholders.

Yeah,I think I brought two games at once, I had gift receipts too.. This time around though I will only have one game as placeholder, I will be keeping Uncharted and Brutal Legend so whatever I'll have as a palceholder I will try to exchange for Ratchet the following week. This time I'll ask for only one gift receipt too. We shall see how this pans out.

Southie.

Looks like the closest to me is Dedham and Revere. Dedham just opened a 5 Guys, so might have to check it out.

The moral situation might be a problematic for some of you, but my recommendation is to just exchange it at Walmart. They'll take it no questions asked w/o receipt if it's unopened if you say it's a gift, and it's not all that bad since they can still sell it. Can't say I worry to much about Wallyworld that I would feel bad for doing so.

Yes, 5 Guys in Dedham. Kill two birds. Randolph just opened a 5 Guys too.

Plus, unless you're rolling into Revere with a mullet and a Camaro, you'd be much better off heading to Dedham.

hehe When my options at toys r us ran out I tried that too but they didn't have Dead Space for PS3 at the time ... basically my luck left me last year, in the end I just got a full refund from toys.
Can you mix and match say 1 game plus 2 accessories?
I'm probably going to buy 3 Uncharted 2's, and I'm going to sell two of them on Craigslist for like $50 straight up. Which basically translates to me buying my own copy of Uncharted 2 for $31.

Back when I was like a 19 year old kid, and I didn't care about such things, I would just go to a Electronics Boutique, find somebody buying a $59.99 game with cash money, and then offer them $5 for their receipt. Then buy the game that the guy had bought, with store credit from some other store, return the unopened, brand new game to Electronics Boutique with my receipt (actually his receipt), and get my cash back. I don't do ish like that anymore. Too much bad karma from stuff like that. But if I was still 19 years old, and willing to risk bad karma, I could do something like that with this Toys R Us deal, and basically get a game for $10, but it's alot of legwork, and alot of unnecessary drama.
I've taken some unopened games back to Best Buy with no receipt and they give me store credit. You can try going that route too.

Yeah, but the truth of the matter is that it's actually return fraud, if you didn't buy the games there, and you can either look at that as a criminal offense, or bad karma or both. I definitely look at it as bad karma, so I try to avoid that stuff. I will admit that I did some things like that back when I was 19 years old, but that was quite some time ago.

Seriously. Return fraud? Lets leave the police work to the professionals, and get back to our discussion about video games.

Im thinking two random games and Uncharted. R&C and MW2 are looking good for the returns.
