Installed the update through USB on my 5007 (EU unit) last night without any issues.
Hello there!

I would like to ask if the new firmware has resolve the issues that i read in this post. I m very close to buy the 5007 but all this problems that i read scares me a lot cause i plan to buy it from Germany (i live at Greece at the moment), so if there are any problem, i would need to sent the 5007 back to Germany.
My alternative is the Pio Sc-27 that has 3 years guarantee (Greece) and not the 2y (from Germany) for the 5007.
Also since that my room is small and i only have 5.1 speakers i m not very appealing for the DSX and PLIIz.

Is the sound of 5007 so good that super pass SC27 so much, to take the risk and buy it from Germany?
Please i need your feedback!

In Most cases the SQ is subjective. I had the SC-27 for about 29 days and put it through its paces. It is a very nice receiver but I just could not put my finger on it I just was not satisfied with the SQ I came from 2 Denons. the 4806 and the 4308CI. I thought the Denons had more obvious power and better build. The Pio seemed light and I think they have started to skimp a bit on build. I gave the 5007 a shot and am very very happy all the way around. This is my first exjperience with Onkyo and the issues are minor compared to some other brands. All seem to have issues now and then. There are a lot of fans out there on the ICE amps I am not one of them. If you read the 07 thread there are a lot issues and the 27 is a clone of that with a few minor improvements. The issues are mostly minor. againb these are only my opinion and not intended to offend anyone.

Down loaded it last night around 11:30 and it took 4 minutes and 46 seconds, but like you I am somewhat hesitant to install it.

Just a quick update on the "audio dropout" issue (I have not updated the firmware yet):

1) Currently I have both DirecTV and U-verse. I recorded Dexter on both DVRs at separate times (East coast vs West coast). The Onkyo lost the lock on the audio signal on each recording at the same exact time (there were about 4 or 5 instances during the program). Therefore, it does not seem to be source equipment related.

2) Last week Heroes had approximately 10 dropouts (I was able to replicate each one over and over). This week it only occurred once - but it occur. I watch a reasonable amount of shows, sports, etc. and just find it so odd that of the shows I watch, it only occurs with Heroes and Dexter and it happens with each episode for each show. I watch other hour long dramas such as Fast Forward and other shows on NBC and it never drops the audio.

Well the joy was short lived. Nw it seems hat after doing audyssey my center channel sounds weak, hallow, and lackluster. Just the other day everything sounded fine. Last night I had to power cycle to get the audio to work and once it did the center channel sounded funky. Off to the service center on friday.

Pardon what I think may sound like noobishness on my part, but I just wanna get clarity on a couple things. I actually just bought this receiver direct from Amazon, and received it yesterday. I am upgrading from a TX-NR905.

First, I always hear that you shouldn't use any of the special sound modes like Concert Hall and all the others that come on these receivers, and that you should instead go with the non-processed stuff. Where do things like PLIIz and the Audyssey Wide feature fit into that mentality? If I am watching a movie encoded in DTS-HD MA, would I want to have that signal to be turned into PLIIz, for example?

Secondly, could you clear up bi-wiring for me? I do have speakers that have two pairs of connections, and never really understood why they were there. My plan, though, at this point, is to connect 11.2 speakers to this receiver to check out the differences between the height and the wide sound. That said, am I also able to bi-wire? Even if not, I'm curious, what is the benefit?

Much appreciated.

if you do some research you'll find differing opinions. i for one did not notice a difference. perhaps you need to have some really expensive equipment to appreciate the difference. i had klipsch rf-7($1200 each) all rotel amps 200 watts/channel and rotel pre-pro. Kimber Kable interconnects ($100 per meter per pair) and Kimber Kable shotgun bi-wire ($30per foot) 8tc/4tc and i could not tell a difference(maybe it is just me) or I needed to go higher end to appreciate.
if you run 11.2 you can bi-wire but not bi-amp or bridge

I am trying to deduce how the Onkyo is handling the NET/USB input as related to its DACs. My goal is to rip my CD collection to a lossless format (probably WMA Lossless) and listen to my music through the Onkyo's Burr-Brown DACs via an Ethernet connection to a DLNA music server. I thought this would be straightforward until I read two seemingly contradictory facts.

First, the Multi Zone section of the manual says:
"Only analog input sources are output by the ZONE 2/3 PRE OUT and ZONE 2/3 L/R speaker terminals. Digital input sources are not output."
My assumption is that the architecture of the AVR only allows the DACs to be in the path of Zone 1.

Second, others in these NRx007 forums have said they can listen to Internet radio in Zone 2. Since both Internet radio and a music server would connect through the NET/USB, this implies I could listen to a server in Zone 2 as well.

So, is NET/USB considered an analog or digital input? When a compressed file is decoded to PCM, how does the Onkyo convert this to analog? Does it use the Burr-Brown or a lesser, secondary DACs? Can this music be ouput to Zone 2?

Well this would seen easy enough to figure out. Go direct to the tv from the cable box/directv dvr and see if the drop outs are still there. If they are it is a source issue and not the Onkyo...

Seems this may be happening to others as well and not isolated to the Onkyo. More information is available at the below listed thread.

Yes, I downloaded the one for USB. Based on some of the comments made previously in this thread it seemed like the way to go.

I had a Dennon 4308CI and had frequent dropouts. the 28days I had the elite SC-27 none now several once in a while on the 5007. The issue I am now concerned with is it seems when the unit is off for a while when I turn it on to watch tv through my pvr I get no audio I have to shut it dow and restart and than it is fine this is not normal. Happened before the update a couple of times now seems most of the time when the set is off for a few hours. These different issues seem to me to be HDMI mating related. I started a ticket at onkyo and befoe that right away he suggested service or return to where I bought it. I really believe this is firmware related. hopefully it can be fixed without disconnecting all These issues should not be happening Any suggestions from anyone please. Originally this unit was mostly problem free.

Okay,

So I finally got my 5007 hooked up with 11.2 speakers (yes, I know it can only power 9.2 - or 9.1.1, but I didn't know before I bought the extra speakers). Anyway, I'm a little disturbed and curious about a couple of things. Hope someone can help:

1) I had an 807 recently, and I noticed the clicks between content type that people have been discussing on these threads; however, last night I was watching "Stargate Universe" in HD via Dish Network and the sound kept dropping out periodically - I mean often, like every 8 seconds. I thought maybe it was a transmission issue with the show, but I would rewind and the clicks did not happen in the same places. What's that about?!

2) I ran Audyssey, (before point 1 above) but have not been able to hear any sound from my wide speakers (or highs, but they're kind of high up to be certain). I have switched the speaker layout to activate the wides (on shows SB/FW) on the display, yet no sound. I checked this while AVP Requiem was playing in HD from a satellite station. Any ideas about what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks,

Also thr rep said you can do Height and wide the same time if you eliminate the back. I forgot the process will call tommorow if I cannot figute it out. Just thought I would mention that as there were a few concerns about it.

Even before reading this, I was a bit nervous about attempting the firmware update over the network. So I downloaded the update instead and used a USB drive.

The update via USB went smoothly and maintained all of my settings.

well my 5007 will be at the onkyo service center for a week or two.

They said its already a known problem for the new *007's to have issues engaging the speaker amps which causes no sound. They said its easily fixable. Just some type of connection issue that when he explained it went right over my head.

If I get more details I'll let you guys know.

The good news is if anyone in northern California has issues and needs repairs there is a new service center in mountain view, California! I live about 20 minutes away which made my day! 4 guys run the shop and they are very very nice and knowledgeable. They also fix tv's, projectors, amps, receivers, anything to do with home theater.

Its called Media Associates.

I am sorry to see your unit is out for service and it looks like if I want to get the problem stated above and posted update on the 3007 -5007 thread Mine will be too. There are two here in NJ 45min to an hour away. At least I will not have to ship it. Just a real bummer a three week old unit has to go in the shop. My better half will never let me live it down. Never in over 30 years of owning a receiver did I ever have to sent one out for repair. Just a real spoiler. I am glad to see I am not crazy and If onkyo knows this they shoul automatically replace the units without and shipping costs to us.

not sure if i found the answer to this, but am i correct in that only front HIGH or WIDE can be active at any given time, and with this receiver, it has to be the regular 7.1 + either HIGH Or WIDE? I was hoping to do 9.2 with HIGH and WIDE but i do not believe this is possible? Would a 9.2 with HIGH and WIDE work using a amp connected to the pre/pros?

You can only use high or wide never both at the same time. The only Receiver I know of the the Denon 4810 at present that can do both but 11.1 with an outboard amp.

Just an update and an FYI on my no audio after off a period of time.
Last night I unplugged for about 10 min after turning off and this am turned on all okay. I spoke the head of CSR here and he said they have know knowledge of any problems specifically to the 007 series. He suggested calling the reginal service center and arrange to take it in based o;n the call.
I called and spoke to a youg woman whe seemed very knowledgeable and suggested based on her experience with other customers after asking me what cable service and dvr they used that it might be a handshake issue especially if intermittant. She said if it was eventually it could cause permanent damage to the HDMI imput on the unit. As I got it to work right once in a while I disconnected the HDMI from the motorola to the receiver and went component and optical to the receiver and HDMI to the DVI on my tv. So far since it works fine The big test will be over night.

I disconnected the HDMI from my dvr to receiver I connected it to the receiver via component and my HDMI to DVI to tv using the optical for audio so far today when I turn it off an hour or more than back on it works without problems. I also spoke to comcast cable. and found and engineer who said it is a handshake issue and there is nothing they can or want to do about it as it will work with component . I guess if it still works tommorow morning after being off all night that would be the issue. well see.

Comcast agrees there are problems and they really do not intend to do anything about the incompatability between the boxes and the different handshake issues with different manufacturers receivers as the component and optical is not a problem. At this poing my main concern is that it is not the receiver . Time will tell.

Well it definately was a HDMI handshake issue not the receiver in general. I have a Motorola 6416III box and it is somewhat incompatable with the 5007.Enough to cause the lack of audio and occasional drops. The Regional service center said if I keep The 5007 connected to the box it could eventually blow the HDMI circut. Just a FYI to anyone having problems. I currently have my Cable box connected Component and Optical. All else HDMI. I the receiver still is HDMI to tv. There were a couple of members having similar problems hope this helps.
