New home theater, is quality an issue with HTPC?

Thread Starter
I am just finishing up with my home theater. I've been building my own computers and playing with them for years now so I have a decent understanding of the hardware aspect. I just started playing around with Media Browser in WMC7 tonight that was suggested in some other threads. I like the program a lot. Seems easy to use so far and looks clean. But now I'm running into some software issues.

I have W7 first off. I can play .avi movies and videos but cannot play my ripped SD DVD videos (Video_ts folders) or any downloaded .mkv files (Have BD's to burn but no reader yet). I downloaded the ffdshow file and can now play the .mkv on my divx player with sound which is HORRIBLY choppy. But still cannot play the video in WMC.

So.....

Couple questions.

1. Will a ripped BD file play with the same quality of video and audio as putting it into my PS3 (I have 7.1 system)?

2. What is the best format to rip a DVD or BD? iso, mkv, video_ts folders

3. I'm thinking about picking up a ati 5800 series card tomorrow, which has a hdmi port on the back, will that also send audio or does audio have to be send to the AVS via a sound device (I want it to sound as it would coming from my actual disk)?

4. What software ad-ons do I need to play my .mkv files with media browser?

5. Any suggestions why my audio is crap?

6. Whats the best way to control my rig once I get it done? Just use wireless keyboard and mouse or is there a remote? I havent bought one yet for my theater so I'm open to suggestion.

Sorry for all the questions. I've been reading for hours and it seems like there is a lot of different paths I can take. I have over 400 BD and DVD's and this would be a GREAT improvement over the racks and racks of DVD shelves. Really guys, thanks in advance for any help!

1. I don't have a PS3 so I can't say how it will compare. However, it will play back with the same quality as if you played it directly from the original BD disc.

2. That's pretty much your choice. I rip all of my DVDs to folders and strip out the unwanted extras. I rip BDs to isos and strip out the extras using Clown_BD, which keeps the HD audfio soundtracks intact. I've never converted a file to mkv so I'm not even sure of the process involved. I have played back mkvs of TV shows downloaded from torrent sites and they looked decent.

3. I believe the ATi card will also stream digital audio via HDMI, but it will be limited to Dolby Digital and/or DTS.

4. Probably Haali media splitter.

5. More info is needed before anyone could answer that.

6. Get a compatible remote IR receiver and a frontend app, such as EventGhost. You will be able to map any keyboard function to a remote using the app, which will allow you to control virtually any PC app. I use a Harmony 880 to control my HTPC, but pretty much any universal remote will work.

I don't have a keyboard connected to mine but I have a wireless mouse that I use when I am copying DVDs. Every once in a while I might need to bring the keyboard in and connect it to type something. And by once in a while I mean not even weekly. But for Media Center itself all you need is this remote, which I love:
