Who games on LCDs?

The input lag threads in the LCD forum haven't really shed much light...I know plasma is more popular among gamers. I currently game on a Panny Vera plasma from 2005 and I notice some input lag...I am needing to switch to LCD however due to room brightness issues....

The more technology and processing that comes out (240hz, LED) etc. makes me wonder whether input lag is getting worse on LCDs?

Can anyone who games on LCD's post their panel and their experience?

I have played on Hitachi Ultarvision LCD (60"), Panasonic 900AE LCD projector, and currently on Pioneer Elite Kuro FPJ1 projector, and have not noticed any lag (at least to my eye/finger).

I game on a Sharp 52D85U and have no problems with it. The stopwatch tests that I've seen show it to have an input lag of 1-2 frames (14-30ms) with 720p and 1080p material using GAME mode. I have no problems doing 1 frame link combos in Street Fighter IV, Virtua Fighter 5 and Soul Calibur. I don't think there are any other games that would even come close to those timing requirements.

i would actually guess that most gamers are using LCD displays. to many people still worried about IR. i would find it very hard to believe that most gamers are using plasma displays.

LCD here: Samsung LN46a650 in "Game Mode". No perceivable lag on my end, but I don't have super-Street Fighter II frame-counting sensitivity. YMMV

I'm hoping as technology improves, the lag situation will get better. Yes, there might be more processing, but manufacturers are also need to cater to all the Xbox360s and PS3s plugging into these sets. So "Game Mode" (bypassing as much processing as possible) will reduce lag, and/or the TV display path will get faster.

How many posts will it take to this turn into another LCD vs. Plasma thread?

I roll with plasma. PQ is way better and isn't too bright on my eyes like a lot of LCDs are.

I game on a 46" XBR2 and I've honestly never noticed any lag

Most LCD's have a "Game Mode" because some engineer realized that 120hz or 240hz adding in fake extra frames, does not help games at all.

Only what is on the disk is what registers a bullet hit.

I use a THX Plasma from Panasonic, and a Samsung 2253BW LCD Monitor, I have never seen any lag on these.

I tried an Acer LCD and my aim was totally off in COD4 too much input lag.

the response time on my LCD is 2ms (milliseconds)

it takes the brain 400ms (milliseconds) to send a signal from the brain to your finger, and for an action to occur like a trigger pull.

ive played on both lcd and plasmas. the models under my sig.

id go with my LCD for sure beause it gets better resolution. also safer to play on lcds then plasmas because of the burn in problem. yeah that only happens if u like pause the game for along time or something or the image is there for awhile but your always moving. but think of the toolbars that are like at the bottom of the screen and stuff or time meeter or something. those never move they can cause a burn in problem.

FWIW pixel response time is different to input lag.

Everyone will be well served to ignore both champer and ice cold in this thread.

I game on LCD, I think my new Samsung 540 is barely as good as the Vizio that went upstairs. Judging by Rock Band 2 lag testing it may be 2ms better in VGA mode at a shade under 30ms, but 45ms via HDMI is right on the cusp of too much lag. Game mode appeared to make no difference.

Supposedly the 600 and greater Samsungs are all far worse however when it comes to lag. The 500 series is still 60fps. I don't think I'd touch 120/240 sets for gaming right now.

I'd probably buy Plasma if it were my main set, but I have a FP DLP in the next room and so the good plasmas were about 2x what I spent on this set and bigger than I need.

I actually game on a 56" DLP Series 6 Samsung. NO problems at all. I never really understood why DLP didn't get much love - it owns my 40" V2500 Sony and I haven't had somebody come visit the house YET who doesn't look at the picture and go 'WOW'.

So what if I burn a bulb out in 5 years. They are easily replaceable and cheap when compared to what I would have spent on a like size LCD or plasma screen at the time.

52" sharp aquos LCD, no lag at all. Pretty quality set

I would think the aversion to DLP is size and weight. Hard to hang one on the wall.....has little to do with performance.

Forgot about that. Wall hanging is not a option in my house b/c I have window issues or I'm left w/ over the fireplace mantel (which I'm not ever going to do).

For me, it sits on a corner TV stand - so depth and size are non-issues for me. I really love my TV.

I have 42" Vizio LCD and have no problem with lag.

Which model plasma do you own exactly? I got 3 Pannies and never noticed any lag.Maybe I'm just not sensitive to it, but just curious.

anyone Game on an LED? they're really attractive to me, given I need the brightest possible for the room, but other threads etc. seemed to connect LED tech to input lag issues.....if so, I may just end up going with 120hz Sharp or Vizio.

im not at home but ill check....i noticed it right away going from an old tube to it. Not bad, but slight....the first time I noticed it was the kickoff meter on Madden was just a little longer to time.

It's this Panny:

Its more likely the 120hz that adds the video processing and lag and since LED tvs are all on the higher end of the spectrum they all feature 120 or 240hz and enhanced video processing. If you are buying for gaming you should stick with 60hz and maybe even a 720p native set (since most LCDs are not truly 720p native this is less of an issue).

If I ran a DLP like I run my direct view LCD I'd be replacing the lamp once or twice a year and would double think every time I watched something SD or just wanted the tv on while surfing the net, etc.

thanks...the tricky part is its 50% gaming, 50% viewing so I'm trying to find a happy medium I can live with.

Using the same Toshiba 42HL67 LCD for gaming for over 2 years and I don't notice any input lag at all. 42", 720P, 60Hz, 0 issues.

I think the "input lag" issue is horribly over-exaggerated.

The happy medium is probably to focus on 60hz sets with VGA connections that meet all your other needs.

My TV is on TOPS 3 hours a day unless its football Sunday. At that rate, my bulb should last me, what, 10 years?

I use a sammy 52A550. No lag. On standard mode. I don't use "game mode." This is my third Samsung LCD. I sold them to go bigger. All are very good with games.
