Vizio soundbar vs Sony CT-500 (my personal shoot-out)

So I just bought the new Vizio LED LCD 55 incher (love it) and while I was buying it I just could not resist also buying the Vizio soundbar with the wireless sub.

I got to listen to them side by side, and the vertict,,,,,, drum roll please,,, the winner is the Sony CT-500,,,,, but not by much.

The main differences, the Sony has a better punchier bass sound while the Vizio is there but not as much punch,,,,,,, the Sony has more of a directional sound, as in, it sounds like you have rears and sides and front channels, the Vizio is less directional but does fill the room nicely.

With all that being said though, I will say the Vizio is pretty impressive and I am suprised it sounds as good as it does.

Now the part of which one Im going to keep,,, Im keeping the Vizio,, while it does not sound as good as the CT-500 it certainly does not sound bad at all and the way I have my set-up works better for me running all my HDMI's into my LED LCD and the running the digital optical out to the Vizio, for me its a way cleaner set-up and solves some of my wiring problems,,,, and the wireless sub is a big plus.

I do have to mention again that yes, the CT-500 does sound better but not by that much,,,,, for the price and the wireless sub I dont think anyone would be up-happy with the Vizio soundbar.

Ohh, another thing, when I first tested the Vizio I had it sitting at ear level, after I mounted it up high in the same place my CT-500 was the Vizio really came to life.
I am a firm beliver now that soundbars sound there best when mounted as high as possible,,,, I have 10" ceilings and both my CT-500 and Vizio were mounted about 2' from the ceiling,,, mounting soundbars up high makes such a huge difference.

Is there a soundbar out there that you don't buy?
Still waiting to see if you purchase the YSP 4100 or 5100 when they become available.

Davyo, which is better for spoken dialogue?

Davyo, man you are a flip-flopper to the highest degree!! My wife thought I was off my rocker when I exchanged coffee makers 3 times (that was a year ago and just last week I did it again). I think you have me beat with the soundbar swapping.

So basically you are running a 'ZVOX style' setup using the TV as the switcher but with an optical out to the bar rather than analog RCA like the ZVOX would. Still, I have a hard time believing that a Vizio speaker bar could stand up to a ZVOX, which is a specialized speaker company that uses higher quality drivers and cabinets. You have tried all the ZVOXs already?

What soundtrack are out getting out of the Vizio...DD 5.1 or DTS? I assume since it is optical you are not getting any of the HD formats.

Another piece of advice...don't get into coffee makers.

The Vizio is way better for spoken dialogue than the Sony is.

Pete, you dont know the half of it, besides A/V gear Im also into cameras and camcorders.

I am basicly banned from Ultimate Electronics,, they even asked me if I was a reviewer for and A/V magazine because I exchanged so much stuff,,, but hey, you really dont know what something is going to sound like or look like till you get it home and play with it.

Na,,, have never tried the ZVOX,,,,, perhaps I will order one today

Is there any issues of having a cordless phone near the wireless speaker (or at least in the same room?).....I also have a router on the 2.4 ghz frequency that acts as a bridge for my media server. I should probably keep my focus on the Sony HT-CT 500 vs a used YSP 4000.

Something to note: The Vizio soundbar will NOT decode DD/DTS.

This became an issue for me as my tv only has an optical output and the tv won't downsample. So, any OTA HD I watch (which carries a Dolby soundtrack), just gives me a BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP! out of the Vizio soundbar.

Otherwise, yes, it's nice...especially for the price.

So then what is the point of the sound bar if i cannot even accept the basic 5.1 signals?

Edit: how are you using the TV as a switcher? Most TVs I thought wont reproduce an audio input over HDMI through it's optical connector.

The Vizio 551 LED LCD does output 5.1 audio out from the "digital optical out" with HDMI inputs, and yes, most TV's will not do this, thats one of the reasons I bought the LED 551 as it does pass the 5.1 audio from all inputs.

The Vizio soundbar has 2 L/R analog and 1 optical input (3 total inputs).

I have a PS3, Apple TV and Wii connected to my TV (my cable is direct from the wall), and I pick up Over the Air HD. I set my PS3 to PCM over HDMI (not LPCM or Dolby or DTS, just PCM). Apple TV outputs a 2 channel by default over HDMI, I believe. Wii is component cables, so the sound input is via the L/R.

If I were to set the PS3 to bitstream, my soundbar wouldn't work.

So, I basically downsample everything before it gets to the TV, then the TV just outputs it via the optical to the soundbar.

However, the OTA HD channels carry a Dolby Digital soundtrack, which my TV does not downsample and this soundbar cannot decode. Thus, when I watch those channels, I have to turn off the soundbar or I get a "BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP....." for sound.

My next purchase is going to be new sound, fyi.

Just something to consider if you're thinking about this as a sound option.
