Linux hulu desktop

Hulu has released the linux desktop:

It's flash based so performance is not the greatest but so far it's been a decent first attempt! The next trick will be getting it working as a mythtv plugin!

That's great news. Thanks for the head's up.

I am hoping to try this maybe this weekend. I get alright fullscreen performance as it is using Firefox, having shows pop out a window, then doing F11 on that window. But that is not workable with a remote, so this might help.

One thing I remember someone mentioning relating to either Boxee or XBMC is the idea of adding a menu item to launch it from within Myth, then when you exit the app you are back in Myth. That is going to be my goal, if I get the time.

Installed it fairly easily. There is a short thread starting with a HowTo on Ubuntu Forums that covers it including the Myth menu. I am a little under-powered, but still, the navigation is really slow. Still, getting to Hulu content using the remote is a win. Also, I used a thread on Ubuntu Forums that covers disabling the screensaver when flash is playing, it looks for flash under the Firefox process. I modified that script to look under the Hulu Desktop process instead, and that worked for me.

Adobe has stated that flash 10.1 will have nvidia hardware acceleration. Looks like they will be incorporating vdpau in it! I'm really looking forward to that. It will get added to mythtv when that happens.

I tried this last night under Karmic for the 1st time.. Looked nice enough.. but no HDMI audio (probably more of a Karmic thing).

HDMI audio worked for me, so it isn't a limitation of Hulu Desktop.

I tried it, but I don't care for it, though. The interface was too slow (on my quad-core Phenom), and buggy. It would do weird things sometimes when going from the show I was watching to commercials and back.

It does work with Lirc, though.

just to add my $0.02 , I also found hulu desktop to be a big resource hog, on my dual core 2.8 Ghz Athlon X2 it was eating up 50% of one core for low/medium quality video which went upto 100% of one core for high quality video.

from what I understand the core issue is adobe flash not using the hardware acceleration in linux, members from this forum are actively chasing adobe for this and have a vote open at adobe's site. more details here
