But I have mine at near field, right behind my couch, which could make them feel so overpowering.

It would probably take like 3-4 15h's to equal a powered cap in output.
Luke is correct. I still have dual VTF-15H for my HT system. You should do a search for "fake VTF-15H" and check out the cabinets he mentioned!!
To expand on the Hsu vs. JTR, I'm sure the Caps would be incredible in the HT application. But here's how it went: I reluctantly upgraded my fried JBL SUB12 to the VTF-15H. Reading about dual sub setups, I quickly decided I wanted another one after the great impression the first Hsu made. It was SOOOOO awesome! There are two much
better places for the second sub, but I had the vision of the aforementioned cabinets and now have a great looking and performing front stage.
I have a second pair of RF-83s I put in my music room, but I drove them too hard and had to replace 2 woofers. That turned me on to trying to find a music-only system that was up to the task. As hard as I tried, I was addicted and couldn't bring myself to skimp and get SHO-10s or eD's cinema series. It had to be JTR T12s. What better to go with T12s than Captivators? A pair of each it was, but the T12s are so much more efficient than the Captivators that I lost touch with bass. Another hard decision.....trade them in for Orbit Shifters, or get a second pair. Since my frequency response sucked with dual Caps, I knew it would suck with dual Orbit Shifters. So I got another pair (last of the 2011s) of Caps and placed them in a different corner to even-out and smooth response while adding the massive output I was after.
Now, to answer your question.....it is a HUGE difference in output, but these two systems have totally different functions so I can only speak for the output capabilities. For HT, I still contend that the VTF-15H is a star performer and can't see upgrading my
HT system at this time. I am beyond satisfied with the VTFs for HT use
