I'm planning to give it a real workout tomorrow during the day when everybody's out! There goes the neighbourhood!
He has different models. I have the powered cap 1000. You have the passive one without a plated amp?
It's the passive CAP powered by Behringer EP4000.

Well I just had a full day of "getting to know you" with the CAP. I am completely and utterly blown away by this thing now............ My wife went to work, I dropped kids at school leaving around 5 or 6 hours of time to myself to really see what the CAP was capable of. In short........it's capable of a lot. The thing that most impressed (among many things) was the responsiveness to increased demand. Whenever I pushed a little bit harder on the volume control the increase in pure, clean output never wavered. The only thing that worried me was a knock on the door from someone in the street......... The output of this thing is incredible, mind-blowing actually. Never had anything or heard anything like this before. It's everything I hoped it would be and as true to form as previous passive CAP lovers have expressed here. I was able to make some very minor changes to achieve what I now say is "Bass Nirvana" from where I first posted about performance. Speaker sizing directing all lower frequency to the sub made a huge difference. I also started with the driver facing the left wall and in between main left front and centre. I faced the driver to the front and I now don't have any problem with voice detail which I mentioned earlier. I received the mic2200 today but haven't taken it out of the box yet. I'm absolutely blown away by how good this is that I'm wondering if I even need to bother with it at all (I don't have any idea how to use it anyway!). My only problem now is addressing fan noise. I've got a plan to set it up in a different room which means I'll just need to buy a longer RCA to XLR lead and hopefully wont need to do the fan mod. Does it matter if this cord is long (30 feet)? Will a longer cord affect performance? Anyway probably preaching to the converted about this Sub but just add me to the list of people whose jaw has dropped, wearing a very big smile. I've listed below just a few highlights (if I may).

MUSIC DVD
Beastie Boys Anthology 5.1 version DVD "Intergalactic" Reverberation to the max, awesome bass!
Led Zeppelin (self titled) DVD John Bonham "Bron yr Aur stomp" fantastic rhythm and I think double bass

MOVIE
TOP GUN Oldie but a goodie initial jet fighter scenes (used to push my old Subs to their limits but nowhere near the CAP's)

Not sure if that's allowed (listing) in this thread but I've watched these scenes tones of times and never felt the sheer excitement/power that I felt today. I still have my old sub sitting in position and initially thought about firing it up right after the CAP to see the difference (and I was very happy with my previous sub). I didn't even bother because it would be a pointless exercise. The grin I had on my face said it all. The funny thing is I paid about the same money fifteen years ago for one of my old subs compared to one new CAP with Amplifier today! Go figure. Just wanted to put some feedback into this thread so that anyone else who is thinking of going with one of these awesome subwoofers but was afraid of not setting it up right can see its not that difficult if you follow the wonderful advice on this forum. Thanks again and I'll be posting some more in the future!

Great feedback and glad you like the new toy. I am a big fan of JTR products and have 2 of their subwoofers in my set-up. I am sure you will enjoy it for years to come.

enjoyed your post but not clear on this portion. I would think the sub would be crossed over at a point where there would be minimal vocal content coming out of the sub, and what there is would be non-directional.

Just finished watching Mission Impossible 4 Ghost Protocol. There were a few excellent scenes with the cap pair.

1.5 years into ownership and I still think these are just exceptional subs! They remain my favorite purchase ever.

What's the difference between a passive captivator 1000 (at $1200) and a passive captivator 2400 (at $1500)? I thought I read the driver was the same. I understand the powered versions have different amps with the different power ratings.

Is the driver different, is the max power which can be thrown at the driver different?
not sure on driver power handling capability differences, but the cap1000 driver is different than the cap2400 driver. The cap1000 driver is 20mm excursion. The cap2400 driver is 30mm excursion.

dstew, you heading back to Gorilla83's for this next meet in April? I'd like to go again, but I'll just check out his place next time I go to PA to visit family instead - no meet required since I've heard most of the audio headliners that will be there this time (except the SVS Ultra Tower Speakers). I'll be curious to read some impressions on the bass capability of his new 8 driver DIY subwoofer system. I'm sure it's impressive!
Jeff revises the cap every year. My powered cap 1000 uses a plated Dayton sa1000 amp. If I can remember the driver magnet has one less ring compared to the passive cap 3 rings. I think Jeff uses speaker power on all the powered models now. The driver I have is a prototype 2012 model. It has a 'v' shape magnet. I also think it has a bit more punch but less down low than the previous model. Defective replacement. The current line, passive and powered 2400w cap should have the same driver.

This fella over here
http://www.avsforum.com/t/1457715/need-to-fill-big-room-help-with-my-decision-pls#post_22956179
Is now considering ORBIT SHIFTER. Perhaps some of you folks that have heard one can chime in. Isn't there a review in one of the GTG threads? Any measurements around? I was thinking passive caps for his situation, but wow go Orbit Shifter. I believe that was Jeff's recommendation for the fella's huge room.

Thanks for pointing out the differences between passive 1000 and passive 2400. If it were me I'd suck it up and get the 2400 rather then commit to the eventual upgrade.

What's up buddy. Sadly I'm not going to make it and I'm kicking myself everyday for it. It's going to be an awesome event. However I'm wondering how you get 25-30 people in the MLP for imaging smile.gif I'm sure they are going to rotate. I thought I read they are going to run JTR subs Jeff is bringing in, which is awesome, but I'm really interested in hearing his DIY quad "silverbacks". They've got a waiting list already, so we'd have to crash it and pitch a tent on his front lawn till he lets us in, we can always bribe with alcohol+BBQ though, shouldn't take too long.

I'll be at the next event for sure, had so much fun at my 1st GTG with you fellas. Cutting back on the GTGs is prolly sucking pretty bad for you ehhh?
yeah --- I figured the same...

If you showed up at his place, what's he gonna do -- lock the door on ya?

You hear that Andrew? We just might be coming afterall. wink.gif

Yeah - I'd like to be there myself, but I've got my own little toys to play with that should occupy me for a while - shipped yesterday I just found out. biggrin.gif

Unready to announce quite yet but I'm looking forward to running em through the ringer.

Quoted because I accidentally came across this image today in a google search and even though I made it - it made me laugh again. I'm a big fan of the tremor movies and even the corny TV show.

I've just finished watching "Tron Legacy" on DVD and had to get back onto the forum and scream Hallelujah! The CAP absolutely loved that movie and so did I. I would go as far to say that is the most impressive sounding film I've ever heard! During some of those bass scenes I couldn't believe how clean and detailed the sound was with a 3 dimensional like feel. At one point in the movie I thought "how good is this sounding" and checked volume level. I got quite a shock when I realised the default setting of the disc was 2 channel stereo and this is what I'd been listening to! I know that sounds nuts but when I got setup right (again!) using 5.1 Dolby Digital..................... It was like the Millennium Falcon had just found light speed! I've also changed my surrounds and this has also made a huge difference but that's for another thread. I had a bit of trouble with mic2200 as I was sent mic200. I will be picking up 2200 tomorrow and have done some research on it and feel I can set it up by trial and error to get EQ, HPF sorted (confidence is growing). During Batman Dark Night there is a nightclub scene where I noticed some distortion from the CAP (not even at high "Tron" like volumes). Only time I've ever noticed this and after watching Tron (at much louder level) not concerned at all. I can now understand where the 2200 should assist in this sort of situation (could have been chuffing?). Anyway after watching the most incredible sounding movie of all time IMO (maybe its just the CAP) and blasting "Shine on you crazy Diamond" in 5.1 from Roger Waters live in the Flesh DVD I am still being blown away by how good this thing is. I'll report back after Behringer 2200 is included and see what changes this brings. Incredible!

Yamaha RXV992 AVR
Mains Klipsch KG5.5s
Centre Klipsch KV-3
Rears Klipsch KG4.2s (bought yesterday $200, very impressive upgrade for next to nix!)
JTR Passive CAPTIVATOR 18inch
Behringer EP4000
Toshiba DVD player

I'm glad you are having a great time with the cap! Unfortunately, you can'tan't set the Mic2200 up accurately by ear, you can suit to preference, but not reference by ear. At least as far as parametric eq is concerned. You'll need to use REW or omnimic to set it up to accurate flat frequency response on a passive cap. Now engaging the Mic2200 hpf to knock down the frequencies below port tune can be done easily without measuring equipment - that would help the port chuffing if you've experienced it. (I'm surprised an EP4000 could even do that). Carp, did you ever encounter port chugging on your single 8 ohm cap powered by a bridged ep 4000?

Never with both ports open. With one port plugged in15hz setting it happened but not very often.

So after dozens of emails with Chad at Epik that have gone unanswered, and after weeks of trying to get a second empire, AND, most importantly, stumbling across what I think might be the deal of the century, I have bit the bullet and will soon be the very proud owner of a Passive Cap 2400. (thank you thank you). I am also getting and Behringer EP-4000 & the Ultra Gain MIC2000. This is undoubtedly a HUGE upgrade from my Empire, which was a HUGER upgrade from my Lava LSP12.

I have NO IDEA how to set any of this up, but after reading about 100 pages of this thread (still in the process) and hopefully from everyone's help, I should be able to enjoy this when I pick it up, sometime towards the end of next week.

I sure hope so. I had every intention of getting a SubM when the funds allowed and never even considered a Cap. Then I saw this deal come up, and spent 2 hours yesterday reading your GTG thread. Was immediately sold and told Bill (the seller) that I wanted it and to close the thread. I am a bit nervous, I'll admit, for I've never had to deal with an external amp or the Mic2200 (which I am guessing is a DSP)?
If you don't have measuring gear you'll just use the mic2200 has a high pass filter (cutting out frequencies below the port tune of the cap) If you get measuring gear you can use the mic2200 as a two band parametric EQ to help smooth your frequency response. You can learn REW, or buy an omnimic or other RTA to be able to take advantage of the Parametric EQs.

Holy crap. There's about 10 words in there that I understand. For starters, I'm sure I'll want just the easiest setup to begin with.

Yeah...I have to ask Archaea to use small words with me too! He gave some great advice though.

I am sure I can help you ratm...pm me and I will give you my address so you can ship me your Cap...ill experiment for you and get back to you in 3-5 years.

I have a little sub envy...I just couldn't afford the Cap..but I wanted one bad. tongue.gif
