Some advice please

Hi all, I'm looking for some advice on some speakers for my home theater, which currently has the Onkyo HTiB 6100 or 7100, I can't remember exactly. It's a 7.1 system, but I'm only using 5.1 currently. I live in an apartment, and that is not likely to change anytime soon, so if I can do away with a sub that would be great (I only have it on very low volume as it is now, and only in the middle of the day).

Newegg currently has the Polk Monitor 70's on sale (170/each) and I'm considering purchasing them. The reciever I have says it powers 130w/channel, is that enough to power the Monitor 70's? Also, I'm looking to purchase a center channel speaker, however I am limited on space. The TV stand I have now, only has a 7'' clearance, so what speaker is available in that size that would work with the Monitor 70's? I was looking at the CS10 center, as it only is 6.5'' tall.

If you guys have any advice on some different speakers that have as much quality to value, and would fit my needs, I do appreciate it. The center speaker in the picture is in front of the TV, I'd like to move it to the first shelf if I could, or if you guys have any ideas/thoughts on placing it there, and perhaps raising the TV somehow?

Speakers will be used for 60% TV/Movies, 35% Games, and 5% Music.

I would pick up an NHT absolute center channel speaker and absolute zero front speakers while they are on closeout. You could step up to the twoC and two's if you want to stretch the budget just a little bit.

I looked into those NHT speakers, and I like the size of the center, but I am looking at floorstanders for the front L/R. Also, I would be worried about not getting enough bass from the bookshelf speakers. I don't like how my current set-up uses the sub for nearly everything lower then a mid, I am looking for a floorstander that has some bass to it, but not too boomy. If that makes sense. I need to be mindful of the neighbors, but I want a good well-rounded sound if I can (I know I'm not going to get sub sound from a floorstander, but if I can get kinda close, that would be great).

You already have a sub - get a pair of good bookshelf speakers to play with the sub. By eliminating the sub and introducing large towers you end up with speakers that are more difficult in which to control the bass. Use the sub when you can - and shut it off when you need to to preserve the peace in the building.

You are taking the correct route to improving your sound - speakers. Many come here with crappola speakers looking to add a new AVR to make them sound better. The 504 isn't too bad as AVRs go and if it does what you need keep it.

What are you looking to spend for new speakers?

I wasn't planning on going 5.0, I was just saying I'd like to keep the sub on low. That sub seems way too boomy, I can barely turn it up before it's too loud for an apartment building. Maybe a better cable would help that, I don't know.

I'm looking to spend around 200/each, willing to go to 250/each if it's a significant jump up. Also, I do like a "warm" sound I think it is called, I have a pair of Sennheiser HD-595's, and I love that kind of full warm sound. I have heard some say the polk's are really bright, so I guess I may be confused about some things.

That was my original plan, to buy a cheap HTiB, with a good/decent receiver, and upgrade speakers later (some sound is better then no sound).

Does anybody happen to know a good place to audition speakers in the south-east minnesota metro?

There is only a couple days left on the Polk deal, does anybody have any thoughts against me going with Polk Monitor 70's and the CS10 for the center? will the CS10 get drowned out by the Monitor 70's?

If it comes down to money - spend it on the center channel speaker. Monitor 40s with the CS2 center and a better sub will sound just as good and cost less. The CS2 is only $30 more than the CS10. And you will be able to better control the bass when you need to with monitor 40s. Just shut off the sub. You can't do that with the 70s.

I watched Band of Brothers blu-ray (first episode, so no explosions), and the sub was just fine in volume, I may actually turn it up. I think my problem was that I had used the auto-calibration on my receiver, and it turned the sub up to a level I wasn't comfortable with. I changed it to a manual setting today, and I liked it much better.

I have decided that if the 70's are worth the price for SQ, I am fine if they create a good amount of bass. I will just use headphones for late night if I have to.

My original issue was with the space constraints I have for the center channel speaker. I am fine with spending more for a higher quality center speaker, the CS10 fit with the space constraints (less then 7'' tall), which is why I mentioned it in the first place.

Should I go with a different brand that has a smaller matching center? Or should I try to raise my TV (any suggestions as to how would be appreciated) and place the center channel in front of it?

I think with the monitor 70s you'll be happier with the cs2. Have you thought of mounting the center speaker above the TV? There are mounts that accomplish this.

Honestly, I didn't really think about mounts, I'm not going to drill into the wall, but if there are stands that I can place behind the TV and the speaker being directly above the TV, I would be alright with that. Where could I find such a mount, and do you have any recommendations?

Check this out, which mounts the speaker either above or below the TV:

Or this, depending on the depth of your TV:

Good luck

I've just spent a while looking into these, I like the price point, and I like that people say they are laid-back and mellow.

A6-6T6 Towers L/R
AT-6T6 MTM Center

I'm thinking that that would be an amazing set-up (and better then the polks? correct me if I'm wrong).

I would have to get something like what robbom mentioned and put the center over the TV. Does anybody have any experience with those kinds of devices, how easy is it to set up? I have a Panasonic TC-P50S1 if that helps.

I appreciate all the great advice from all you guys on here, it's really helping me out.
